Safety On My Forum
(1/1)
ManOfBliss:
Hello There,
I have a website through which I run a business, so it's important I can keep that running safely.
Is it secure to set up my forum in a directory of my website, for example http://www.domain.com/forum?
What are the chance the forum could somehow disrupt my website's activity? Would you recommend
I set up a second server for this forum? Thanks.
Timothy
Colin:
Yes setting it up in /forum is fine. You could put it on a seperate server if you are worried about security, but there are no known vulnerabilities of SMF 2.02.

Do you do regular backups? If not, why not start? There's always a chance of a server-level compromise and you need to be prepared for it.

It's no less secure than putting it elsewhere on the same server.

It depends. The latest releases of SMF 1.1 and 2.0 don't have known vulnerabilities, but stuff changes all the time. I'd say the chances are about the same as whatever you're using for your existing website being compromised and used to disrupt things.

I don't think that would be necessary. I mean, if you have the money to make sure it's on a whole different server, you could if you're really worried. However, it might be better to get a proper consultant to analyze your current security practices and get a backup solution in place.
