May I install a fresh SMF2 and import the database from my old SMF1 forum?
PersianDeveloper:
Im having problems with my smf1 forum, suprisingly its making new problems each month
maybe thats because I used to manually edit my forum, installing lots of packages etc
anyways
now the question is, is there a way to install a fresh SMF2 forum, and in some how import all the messages topics etc into it but not the packages and manually edited lines
or upgrading from smf1 to smf2 would do this automatically?
see the point is I dont want any malfunctions on the new forum, only topics, users, posts, messages and maybe some other primary data
Arantor:
Take a backup first.
Then do the upgrade. This will refresh all the files and do the necessary database conversions.
K@:
Nope.
SMF v2 is different in ways that mean that the database won't work.
You could READ MY SIG!!! Then, you could get the large upgrade for the version of SMF that you have, dearchive it and upload everything to your site, overwriting what's there, now.
That will make your site almost virginal.
Then, you should read my sig, again...
After that, you could attempt the upgrade to v 2.0.2.
(:P @ Arantor, who beat me to it) ;)

the database wont work?
you mean I will lose all my threads users , etc?
so whats the point of upgrading etc
and why not to panic then ? ;)

what are the "necessary database conversions" ?
are they mentioned somewhere in the upgrading process ?
sorry to ask so many questions, here I'm trying to be ready for any possible problems
Arantor:
The database for 1.1.x will not work in 2.0. The database layout etc. changed. The upgrade fixes all of that for you. You just upload all the files, run the upgrader and it goes and makes all the changes for you automatically.
Doing the upgrade means you won't lose anything either.
But just in case, do take a backup first.
