Memcached problem

Slow down your server? That sounds very strange... Sounds like you made a mistake somewhere :)
Exactly what did you do to make it work? And what are the problems you are encountering?
Well, if it is CentOS you could just do: "service memcached stop" and see if your server no longer is slower than usual. If it is, you can just disable it permanently.
Note that you have to make sure SMF no longer tries to use it _before_ you stop the service...

Exactly what happens if you give the command to stop memcached?
If it says unrecognized service just run: /etc/init.d/memcached stop
And you didn't install memcached through yum so you cannot use yum to remove it.
