Pilots are human.  Everybody makes mistakes.
Just because they are certified doesn't mean they are perfect.

The thing about the boats was either in bathroom reader 9 or 13, can't remember which.

Pilots make mistakes, it just doesn't matter because they don't fly, the father of my friend is pilot at the KLM, and the auto-pilot/computer flies, just in emergency/special cases he has to fly, the auto-pilot even lands for the pilots in case of normal weather, only the pilots do the landing most of the time themselves, because that's fun and the only fun they're having in a pretty boring flight of many hours...

There are less pilots then drivers... and not al of the drivers have the job of trucker.. ect. So most of them are less trained and will be more promted to make a mistake. Most pilots are well trained.

And yes mistake do happen :(

That is in airliners.

Most plane crashes are GENERAL AVIATION.  That means: your neighbor Joe goes out and flies a two seat plane, but crashes it because he ran out of gas.

Airliners do crash, and autopilot is a VERY sophisticated system.  If one sensor goes out, it may not be able to compensate.  The pilot is there because we, humans, are the most sophisticated things on the planet.  If we just trusted autopilot, a lot more people would be dead.
