Compurer config question (hard drive/linux/windows)

(1/7) > >>

Jeff Lewis:
Ok, so I want to mess around with Linux but am torn over if I should get a whole new box for Linux or just put another hard drive in my current one.

Does anyone know if I can have both Linux running and Windows running at the same time on seperate drives?

I'd like to develop on Windows and send to a Linux Apace install.

I'm guessing my best bet is to just get another box though...

I know for sure it can be done. However cannot tell you how exactly you do it. Just I know it works, a friend of mine has installed it like this.

Tony Reid:
Depending on what kind of development will dictate the best method.

If its not GUI stuff, then the best bet would be a cheap pentium II as a second box - possibly using VNC to switch between screens.

However if you are going to do GUI type development, then a higher spec box would be better.

If you want to stay on the same machine and run the OS's simultaneously then You could of course run a virtual machine like VMWARE software and it will even allow you to set up a virtual network - although this is expensive software.

If you dont need them to run at the same time, then dual booting is an option I suppose - as long as you are using FAT32 for the drive formats. Otherwise linux might have a problem reading from your windows drive.

Hope that helps.

Imo, by far the easiest way to get two operating systems installed is to take out any drives you have in the comp, put in a blank hard drive and install linux on it, then put the windows one back in :) Then you can choose in the bios which one to boot from.

(Depending on you're mobo you might be able to see a list of bootable drives by pressing a key, for me thats F8 ).

I have a duel boot PC, with Red Hat and XP. Both are installed on seperate HD's as XP seems to need NTFS and refuses to install with FAT32.

They are not running at the same time ever. If I need to use Red Hat you have to shut down and boot into it, if you need to go from Red Hat to XP you have to reboot into XP. Most Linux Distro's come with a boot manager such as Grub or Lilo now though.

If you get another box for Linux, im told that you can network windows and Linux together, but you might need to run a Samba file server to be able to switch files from one to the other. I've just made a Fat32 partition on the Linux drive which windows and Linux can read so I can dump files there while I go from one OS to the Other. Dunno if thats any help though.
