SMF Development > Applied or Declined Requests
extended details for new user registration
jamescollett:
I have recently set up a SimpleMachines forum for my residents association and it's workng well.
One thing that we have suffered from a little is bogus registrations from non-residents. (I cannot imagine why!) As far as I can see a prospective new user needs to provide vey little nformation to submit a registration request. I think it would be great if there were adidtional fields that could be specified as mandatory information during the registration process - in our case the fields required to define a physical address would be ideal, thus making it more obvious if an application was genuine or bogus.
Maybe I have missed this feature in the configuration of the forum, in which case could someone please show me the way? Alternatively I think such an extension woud be super. Does one exist?
Thanks.
Arantor:
Well, bogus registrations are a major problem for all forums, really.
You can create additional fields on registration through the custom profile fields, which can be enabled from Admin > Configuration > Core Features > Advanced Profile Fields.
An alternative method would be to create an anti-spam question (Admin > Configuration > Security & Moderation > Anti-Spam) that would only be known to members of your residents' association and would generally stop bots from even registering.

Hello jamescollett and welcome to sm.org!
You can already do what you are asking for, with a base SFM.
First thing activate "advanced profile fields" in Admin > configuration > core features.
Then go in the custom profile admin section: admin > configuration > features and options > profile fields
Create a new field ("New field" button in the bottom right corner) and the fill all the required fields and set the box "show on registration" to "yes, and require entry".
Arantor types way faster than me! :P

Wow! - what quick responses! Thanks so much.
I think the "Custom Profile Fields" configuration is exactly what I'm after - plus the challenge question feature.

Glad it was what you were looking for! ;D
