Installing SMF on a PC -- need to investigate backup file for contents
(1/1)
strikemaster2000:
I've been handed a backup of an SMF forum and need to recover it in order to do some investigation.
Is there a means of installing SMF on a PC and where do I do for the correct instructions and downloads.
Colin:
You would have to install PHP, Apache, and mySQL? Have you already done that?
Shambles:
^-- as above.
You could try xampp.
Easy to set up, easy to run, easy to follow.
Chas Large:
EasyPHP is also good for this. Have used it a lot with SMF test sites.
You say you need to investigate a backup file, I'm assuming you mean the database, you have that too yes? not just the site php files.
If it's something you need to find just within the dB you could create a dB on your web host and then upload the backup to it and explore the dB with PhpMyAdmin or similar without even installing SMF. You could even open the dB in a plain text editor depending on what format it was backed up in.
