As a Respiratory Therapist with 8 years experience in all areas of Respiratory Care from front line trauma, to geriatrics, and rehab, and curently working in a long term care facility this touched a particular nerve with me.
I went to the site expecting the usual sob stories I hear all the time from families seemingly determined to prolong the suffering of their loved one at tax payer expense, but after reading a little I realized this wasn't the usual story of the typical persistent vegitative patient. This line in particular jumped out at me:
--- Quote ---Terri is not on a respirator or any artificial life support.
--- End quote ---
At work now I have half a dozen patients for whom the outcome is unavoidable, and negative. They will never come off the ventillator. Some are vegitative, and some are not, but generally they are all suffering teribly, and sucking down hundreds of thoussands or millions of tax payer dollars a year with no hope of recovery. This case is different!!
This girl is not on a vent. Her condition is stable. The only "external support" she currently requires is feeding through a tube, which is not a big deal at all. There is the potential for at least a partial rehabilitation, if not near total. she is also relatively young, and has no other significant health problems aside from an apparently undetermined amount of brain damage(IE: no cancer, COPD, emphysema, kidney failure, liver failure, heart problems, etc.) Many of my co workers have characterized me as someone who would disconnect myself from artificial support, and I normally a big proponent of "right to die", but not in this case. This girl need to be thouroughly examined(MRI) to determine the full extent of brain damage, and needs to have an eight or twelve week trial course of aggressive rehab to see how she responds. I will definately sign the petition, though it may be too late now.

As much as I don't want them to take her life away, the tube was removed yesterday, and she'll pass away in a few days... :(

Jeb Bush has ordered the tube be reinserted.
