move only content to a new host
warhonowicz:
Hi,
I need to move to a new host & domain and have found many posts describing that I can do it by making a backup of the MySQL DB and restore it to the new server, then copy all the files via ftp from the old to the new server and finally use repair-settings.php.
That way, unless I am mistaken, I copy everything across, including a few problems that I currently have with my forum. It's nothing major but annoying and I was thinking that maybe there was a way of copying only the content (posts, members, files) across into a brand-new SMF install without the few niggly bits.
Is there such a way?
Thanks,
Arnold
Orangine:
What I would do is to move the site across and then perform a full upgrade. This way you may lose some of the mods, but if you keep getting errors after that that means they're all in the theme template files, which would be easy to track down and fix.
Colin:
You say files, but do you want to get rid of all the custom edits and mods?
warhonowicz:
Yes, essentially I want to start with a fresh SMF 2.0.2 install with a few mods (the ones I actually need) and (possibly) a different theme
Colin:
Then just pull the database and get a fresh SMF install. Do you care about avatars and attachments?
