Custom login method

Anyone have any ideas? :'(

SMF's security is so multi-layered and its files such a rabbit warren of includes and function calls (all for good reason, don't get me wrong) that I'm finding it impossible to identify what's blocking me from doing what I want to do.

I know it's not a common scenario for people to want to bypass the traditional login method, but I just hope there's someone more familiar with it than I who can help me out.
