Oh there are a few people who have the knowledge of doing so, but honestly you'd find it easier to bridge SMF to whatever other solutions you already have, rather than trying to replace its functionality...

If you really did want to do so, though, take a look in the function database (linked from the very top menu) for registerMember() for your version of SMF.
