Can you go to 'Administration Center » Posts and Topics » Post Settings' and tell us what the value for 'Maximum allowed post size' is? Your post is 3,591 characters which seems a reasonable size and I can post if fine on a test vanilla install.

Are you using quick reply or the WYSIWYG editor?

The maximum allowed post size is "20000", and when I tried using some filler text with about 15000 characters it worked.

The text I quoted in my OP does not work with quick reply or WYSIWYG, or the regular reply (with plaintext).  It is interesting to note that if I paste that text in my post and then try to switch to WYSIWYG, nothing happens.  It is like it cannot process the BBcode.

I got it confirmed that it isn't just a problem on my computer - a guy from my hosting company had the error as well.

Look for slightly curved single and double quotation marks, em dashes, etc. The Smart Quotes list can be found at http://www.catskilltech.com/freeSW/SMF/projects/index.html#smrtquotes [nofollow] .

Well, I looked over it and couldn't find any ASCII (the text is in the OP, in case your eye is better than mine [likely]).  Usually posts with non-ASCII characters post and either display properly or have little "?"s.

This appears to be an example of Smart Quotes. I saw it by zooming in (Ctrl+) on your first post.

Hmm, yes it is.  I tried removing those plus all other quotes, and then searching (with Notepad) for other those other similar characters listed on the site you linked (didn't find any more).  However, the problem remained. :-/

I can't narrow the problem down to specific sections of text, since halves or thirds of the text seem to work but not the post as a whole.
