Can be many reason but one which I suspect that files are not properly uploaded, filezilla on its default setup is fine. You may try downloading fresh package and try install again.

Kill Em All:
The error log can be found in the root of the smf directory. It is a txt file I believe named error_log or something of the sorts. Your directory permissions seem to be fine by the way.

Edit: It could also be a problem with it being on a sub-domain. SMF works fine with sub-domains, however a small handful of webhosts are configured oddly where in the repair settings tool, the file paths should have a domain.com/forum resemblance rather than forum.domain.com. Maybe try that?
