Just installed.. can't make new topics/replies. Also,new sessions on my website?

I just successfully installed the latest SMF. When it brings me to my forums, if I click NEW TOPIC, NEW POLL, or REPLY to the default thread, I am simply redirected to the forum index. I've tried reinstalling and the problem persists. I installed from the install file at this url:
/public_html/forums/install.php

Also, another weird problem is this: Any session variables started in "/public_html/forums" carries over into all other pages of my website that are not even in the "/forums" sub folder.

Any help is appreciated :)
