SMF or Vanilla Open Source?
yeehi:
I have been scouting around, looking for free as in freedom forum software. I have been very impressed with SMF but kept looking. Vanilla Open Source has a lot of good functionality:

I wonder what you think of it, if you have tried it. On their website it says: Vanilla is the best, most powerful community solution in the world. That is some claim!
Are there a couple of other forum solutions you suggest I take a look at?
Thank you for your help!
Yoshi:
Sorry, yeehi, but do you say that we, from SMF, should suggest other forum softwares to our members? :P
We must be like crazy to start doing that.
yeehi:
Haha!
It is useful to know what the second best option is, as this often gives you a better understanding of how good your first option is, I think.
Anyway, I have enquired at the Vanilla Open Source boards, too. Somebody there said that SMF was just another old school forum! Here is what he went on to say:
For one they don't have pluggable addon, their mod packages search and replace part of the core, somethign that could easily break, especially with mismatches with upgrades, it is also not very clear.
Plugins have their issues, but at least they leave the core clean. I also think the way Vanilla/Garden does it is very versatile, but prevents a lot of collisions that you could get in V1.
So, what do you think about that? And do please tell me what you think the real competition to SMF is. Maybe we can start incorporating features from the competition into SMF...

Sure it is, but it is about your own opinion. Mine for instance would go to MyBB if anything horrible ever happened to SMF, laying my cards on the table.

The plugins that user describes usually can't do half of what the mods here at SMF do. Plus, most packages designed for 2.0.2 or 2.0+ use hooks nowadays, not requiring *any* edit (or maybe one or two to get things working).

Opinion above :P

Every software has it's own potential, I can't say anything about that.

Naw, that's just plain copycatting :P
K@:
yeehi is the managing director of Vanilla, so what do you expect? ;)
Spamming the support boards seems a bit much, though. So, I'll move this to the Spam board Chit Chat. ;)
