AngelinaBelle, thanks the tips.  I think the best option at this point is to hide new topics from guests, while allowing them to browse through old topics.

MrPhil - thanks a bunch.  I'm on 1.1.16 so I'll give this a shot.  I have lots of old topics in all my forums so I shouldn't see the blank page issue.

I'll report back with results as soon as I implement the code changes.  Thanks! :)
