I'm not sure I understand your question. The SMF "backup" is a backup of the database (not the files). The problem is that it's often bad. You need to make a backup of the database, and you should use phpMyAdmin or some other MySQL tool to do it, not the SMF backup. Don't wait until you find that you have a bad backup (via SMF) -- it's too late then.

Just a question for the topic starter...
Your host might have a more recent backup.
Mine backs-up every day and I can even access them through my CPanel.
Moving to SMF v2 support. (Pure guess as to the version, obviously.)
MrPhil:
Wow, K@, it sounds like you have a gold-plated host! Most do back up daily, but...
* keep the backup around for only a few days before overwriting the tapes (don't wait too long to request a restore!)
* charge a hefty fee to go looking through the backup for your files or database to restore
* charge even more to do a partial file or DB restore (lots of manual work)This is because most hosts are backing up their servers primarily for the purpose of insuring against a server-wide catastrophe (e.g., a disk crash), and not for the purpose of helping customers restore bits and pieces of their sites (that's a secondary consideration, and they can make some money off it, or at least break even).

Thanks for telling me!
Unfortunately im late :(

Oh, I do. Every day, I'm grateful for her, too. Especially as she's given me ooddles of space and she charges me squat, with no ads, or anything!
She's a little Welsh angel and no mistake. :)
