Perhaps your earlier attempts broke something? I would suggest very carefully backing out all your previous "colour" attempts and starting over with the changes suggested (copying the 'color' tag to 'colour' should be the only change needed within that tag).

Note that there is a $disabled array with member 'color'. You may need to update the code to handle a 'colour' member in the same way.

I'm not sure that CSS will recognize both color: and colour: in the CSS itself. You may want to stick to color: in the output CSS or style attribute.

I had to, let's say, suspend my effort as I just wasn't getting anywhere and I was waylaid by other priorities, but that mod looks just the thing, thank you  :)
