Language support for titles

(1/1)

MrPhil:
Does SMF 2.x offer multiple (language-dependent) category, board, (and even) topic titles to be used depending on the language? That might make a nice feature if it's not already in plan. I.e., if viewing the forum in English, your titles appear in English; if viewing in Chinese, they're in Chinese.

If most board owners likely aren't going to be fluent in all the languages they install, perhaps titles could be automatically translated (once) via Google API and stored in the database. Potentially the same thing could be done for posts themselves, although that might be a strain on the database. In any case, it's likely that the machine translation would be a bit rough, and someone would need to touch up the translations.

An interesting question would be how to support a bona fide language for which there is a translator but no SMF support pack. If a user could somehow request this language, could all the other labels be created on the fly? Could SMF write out the appropriate files (once) on the fly, such as index.klingon-utf8.php? Would forum owners find it worth it?

emanuele:
Translate the titles (categories, boards and titles) leave with the posts in the language they have been posted, so it doesn't give much (it just tells you that you are missing a discussion you could probably be interested in just because you don't know the language).

Additionally with the browsers that are including by default tools for translation (at least Chrome, don't know the others, but I guess many will follow, except IE I assume :P) I think that such a feature would be old by the time it would be ready. It would be similar to the check spelling nowadays: any browser has an integrated check spell facility (except IE as far as I have heard) and the one in SMF is no more particularly useful.
