Copying and pasting a post at my forum
kathiemt:
I'm using version 2 at http://www.virtualassistantsgroup.net. I have tried several times now to copy and paste a post I'd prewritten elsewhere to my forum but when I go to post it, it only posts the very first letter of the first word and nothing else. I've tried stripping any code (from Outlook or Word) and putting it into notepad first and then copying it but still the same thing happens. Is there some setting stopping me from copying from somewhere and pasting into my own forum and if so, how do I switch that off please?
MrPhil:
"prewritten elsewhere" means in MS Word? Can you tell what character it's dying on? Is there any chance that it's dying on a "Smart Quotes" punctuation? Or possibly, on an oddball thin space character? If it's a Smart Quote, some people have reported success by converting to UTF-8. Many browsers will convert pasted-in Smart Quotes to the actual UTF-8 encoding, but that's not guaranteed. I don't think any of the oddly sized spaces are in Smart Quotes, so if that's the problem I don't know how it would be fixed. However, that might explain why it truncates at the first letter.
There is nothing in SMF preventing text from elsewhere being pasted into the browser, but if the character codes don't match up with what SMF encoding supports (typically either Latin-1/ISO-8859-1 or UTF-8), strange things can happen. This is a design limitation in SMF. The best you may be able to do is to copy a sample into a plain text file (that produces this truncation effect) and attach it to your next post. I could look at the character codes and see what's there.

This is the message I was posting. It would only show the I at the beginning and nothing else. I've had this happen a few times. I have put it into notepad to get rid of any coding and then paste it from there but that hasn't worked. But it works here. So a setting here must be different to the setting at my forum.
I’m sure you’re aware of the new national business names directory. As you aware that they’re now publishing private addresses of business owners, without having notified that this is the case? It’s come to light during a discussion on a forum at Flying Solo. This means that many small business operators who are using PO Boxes to keep their residential addresses private are now having their home addresses published on a national register without having been consulted or informed. We’re being advised at this business forum to check with our accountants to get our business registrations listed with them instead. I don’t know what that means to Accountants who are working from home.
Are you aware of what’s going on with this? I do feel that means Accountants are going to have more put on them if they’re now going to be asked to be the listed address for registered businesses and start receiving mail for those businesses?
My husband is suggesting I lobby our local MP about this and I’m encouraging the business owners at Flying Solo to do so as well. But we’re just a small drop in the ocean really when I know there are tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of small businesses in this country that are homebased. What do you know or what are your thoughts?

Do you use the WYSIWYG editor?
If so, try disabling it and see what happens.

As MrPhil says, that quote mark is causing the input to be truncated at point of origin. Paste the sentence then replace the "single quote" character with one from your keyboard. Make sure you do all 10 of them in those three sentences.
