Small spoiler below,
Master Chief does make a guest appearance in the final cut scene, once in the Pillar of Autumn you press right on the right stick and you see him in the Cryo tube. A nice way to incorporate him without making it super lame, in my opinion.

This is based on the trilogy of books that were released around the time after Halo 1 was released, right? Specifically Halo Reach is the based on the first book in the trilogy?

Yes that's right. It is basically based on the 1st offering of the trilogy.

Just rented it today. First Halo-related game I've played since getting an XBOX. I'm still getting the hang of it at the beginning here.
Hopefully my aiming will improve lest I end up in a body bag.

The Nobel Map Pack came out yesterday, it features Anchor 9, Tempest, and Breakpoint.
Having only played a limited amount of time on these I feel these maps are pretty solid. There are probably a few tweaks that could improve some areas but so far my favorite is Tempest with Anchor 9 right behind. I really wanted to try invasion on Breakpoint, a huge map, but so far no success.
