massive board performance and a question

(1/2) > >>

lparker:
after spending some time searching the forum, and coming up with not a lot to satisfy my question, im going to ask myself

first i wanted to know, how well can an installation of the board handle 1000+ boards? right now we have 204 to be exact

www.netends.com [nofollow] if you want to check it out. and part of our problem is we are running a classified ad's website and due to our geological location there are multiple cities and towns spread out over 100's and 100's of miles so we wanted to break it down into different cities to help people find stuff locally. so by creating categories for different cities, we would need to duplicate those 200+ current boards 5 or more times... now will the board be able to handle all those with out much lag or hiccups? and is there an easy way? a mod? or something? that could make my life easier that i wont have to manually add another 1000 boards or am i gonna have a long week?

Arantor:
On a technical level, performance is going to hurt when you get into the thousands, and there's not really a good way to solve that.

But also consider... present a user with that many boards, is that not going to confuse them really badly?

granted, they might get confused, but at the moment they are getting frustrated by getting interested in buying an item only to find out it's two towns over and not fee sable to drive 2 hours to pick up said item. and as we all know the average Joe user doesn't necessarily include all information like where they are located and the such in his original post

we were thinking of putting a main category for each town, which could be minimized to help curb confusion, but any clue if there is a way to duplicate boards or am i stuck manually doing them all over?

Arantor:
Trust me, there are better ways of doing it - because you know users won't post things in the right place.

Why not, instead, use the Custom Form mod to make users fill in the location into the post in the first place? That way you don't have hundreds and hundreds of boards (which means no performance matters) and you don't confuse users with many many boards.

FrizzleFried:
Or add a custom TOPIC prefix for each city your users can choose...
