Commonly used external utilities such as Filezilla have a design flaw (treating no file extension = ASCII transfer). We tell people to make backups of their files, either for safety or for transferring them around. Surprise, surprise, many of the attachments are NFG after a restore. Guess what... SMF gets the blame!
The workaround for this (to either put the correct file extension on the mangled filename, or put .doc to force binary transfer) is trivial. Result: happy SMF users. So, what's with all the pushback?

Blurgh. Ok Ema, you are technically correct. It's still a PITA for SMF users. Can we fix it?
