Social networking, in a box, BuddyPress?
ChalkCat:
If you just want to add a simple, basic forum to a WP blog, that does act as an add-on rather than trying to take over the show, then search the WP plug-in site for Mingle Forums. That's how I was going to do my forum before I decided I needed something more dedicated ;)

Personally I wouldn't use WP in any fashion, I'd use a board in SMF to be treated as a blog ;)

So I created a fresh Wordpress install on a different domain and installed Buddypress, intending for it to take over. However, I quickly found it complicated and cumbersome, yet with functionality too limited to be worth my while. That's when I found SMF and started all over again :)

This is what I'm afraid of about using buddy press.

One of our customers at work uses used BudyPress on their website. It's kinda like a "Facebook-lite" that uses Wordpress as a framework. It does take over Wordpress for the most part. If you want a very social-oriented site, it's worth a quick look, but you'll have all the limitations of using a blog engine to try and run that kind of site.

Being a new site I know that I will have to be the one to add content. At times I will use it to link back to my SMF appliance forum.
So I was thinking I would use wordpress for this blog. But I have tried blogging before and know that it's hard for me to do on a regular bases, so I would want the site to be inviting for visitors to register and add content.
It seems easier for me to get people to register at a forum type site then a blog type site.

For publishing articles and content, look at Drupal and maybe even Joomla! as options. They are both very complex, but can support multiple people offering articles on different topics. That might be more what you need than some "social" site.
