Test Site

(1/1)

grizzz:
I just have a curosity question.

How many of you have a "test site" or a dummy site that is not published in whch you test mods and updates BEFORE making them live?  If you do have one, is it modled exactly like your live site?  Do you have a handful of "testers" that beat the site up to ensure everything is working before going live?

I have been toying with this idea after a suggestion was made about loading a mod that we know will not work with v2.x and I really don't want it to blow up my live site.

Thanks for input and dialog.

Mick.:
Yes. My current site resides in http://idesign360.com
My test site resides like this: http://idesign360.com/devsite/

Simply create a folder in your HTML folder called 'test' or 'dev' or whatever and install a brand new smf.
Easy as pie.

I have a test site on a different domain name currently, installed the same version as smf as my live site, and installed all the same mods too. Great testing space! Highly recommend doing this.

Further to this initial enquiry, has anyone set-up their test site pointing to the original database - or a copy of the database so you can see how your test site reacts more realistically?
I'm now looking at upgrading the smf version and would like to use an exact replica of the site to test how all the data responds.

mrintech:
Yup! I have a test site installed on a sub-domain

I test mods before installing them on live site.

This way I don't have to create too many backups (full and database) :P
