The error's server-side, which basically means "Slap your host about", I believe.

The odd thing is my test forum isn't affected.

K@:
One's not an exact duplicate of the other, though. They may even be on different servers with different settings.

Old Fossil:
Just spoken to the hosts whom said they could see nothing wrong.

K@:
What's the exact text of the error, then?

Just "It's buggered-Error 503", or summat?

Nothing in your server error logs?

MrPhil:
503 is "Service Temporarily Unavailable: server overloaded or down". It could mean:

* acute problems with the server (which the host should realize and correct)
* you and/or other customers on the server have outgrown it and should move to something bigger (the host should be able to tell you about customer loads in general and yours in particular)
* your site is trying to do too much (too many mods) and you're loading down the server to the point where it gives up
* someone's site has been hacked and is spewing spam or participating in DoS attacks, consuming too much CPU power (your host should be able to discuss load profiles, especially if yours is the offending site)If it's your site bogging down the server to the point where it 503's, your host should be able to tell you. In that case, reloading with a more vanilla system might make the difference. If you've been hacked, restoring a clean site should make a difference (but investigate how the hacker got in, and don't assume that the backup is necessarily clean).

If your host can't or won't tell you that your site is the offending party (and possibly assist you in determining what's going on), there's not much you can do except to start shopping for a better host if the condition continues.
