Title: YouTube BBC Tag (XHTML Compliant)
Post by: Daniel Marquard on January 03, 2007, 09:18:19 AM
Link to Mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=595)

Overview

This mod allows a poster the option to embed a YouTube video in a post through the use of the [youtube=425,350][/youtube] BBC (bulletin board code) tags. What makes this variation different from other YouTube BBC mods is that the code it uses is XHTML compliant, thus keeping with the forum's XHTML validity.

Its use is easy: simply plug the video ID (random jumble of letters and numbers) between the
', 'description' => $txt['youtube']),
[/code]

Compatibility

This mod is only compatible with SMF 1.1 and 1.1.1. This mod will not be ported to work with any version bellow 1.1, as I only encourage the use of version 1.1 or above.

Odd. Are you using a custom theme or is that none of the files were changed whatsoever?

From what I could tell nothing had changed, it was showing as installed but wasn't working, so I ftp'd the files that needed changing, checked against the changes that should have happened, and nothing was there ??

I'm using SMF Default and Babylon, but even on the non scheme specific files nothing..

Could be pac-man playing up

Just out of curiosity, did you download the mod from the mod site itself or through the package browser in your forum?

Sorry, I'm not familiar with that. Is it an FTP client?

Edit: Seems it is in fact an FTP client. Well I've tried it on several various installations and it's worked for me.

Nope. I highly recommend you upgrade to 1.1.1. Once you upgrade and install my mod, please tell me know if the install works for you. It's the wierdest thing that it will install for me, but not for Motorhead.

If you use the proper upgrade package, most of your mods will remain intact, if I remember correctly.

It may have been something playing up with the server when I did the mod, it's no big deal 10 minutes to install manually by editing the required files and uploading them...

Working a treat on my site..

I added this mod to my site, and it works fine for everyone, except for people using firefox. Though firefox 2 seems to have no problems with it.

Here is an example thread:

What changes should I make to the code to make it work for them?

Thanks,
Matt

The default code for YouTube videos, as posted on each video's YouTube page, is not XHTML compliant. I took that code and revamped it to be XHTML compliant, apparently at the cost of browser compatibility. I'm not aware of another way to format the code to be accepted in all borwsers and still retain its XHTML validity. Any ideas are welcome for compatibility, but the goal here will still be to keep the code XHTML transitional.

Nice, I like it. However, is there a way that we can tweak the code to make it default to 425,350 in the attributes? I would like my users to simply be able to enter the tags and it automatically make it 425x350. Something like:
[youtube]SVaQ3bkLC28[/youtube]
I know that clicking the BBC button automatically places the attributes in the tag, but the majority of my users manually type the code.

There is a method of doing that; unfortunately, at the cost of the inability to define custom dimensions upon implementing the changes.

In Subs.php, find:
'content' => '',

...and replace with:
'content' => '',

In Post.template.php, find:
'youtube' => array('code' => 'youtube', 'before' => '[youtube=425,350]', 'after' => '[/youtube]', 'description' => $txt['youtube']),

...and replace with:
'youtube' => array('code' => 'youtube', 'before' => '[youtube]', 'after' => '[/youtube]', 'description' => $txt['youtube']),

Very nice mod. I think it would be cool if when someone pushed the youtube button and a little popup came up that allowed them to either put the entire youtube url or just the youtube video code.

This would make it easier for those that are not the best at using BBC code.

Just a thought

yup..very nice..working perfectly..
the easyest way to do it...would be to tell the mod to actually read only the last 11 characters of...whatever you input..
as the youtube code is http blabla+11 characters..the last 11 characters...ae the important ones
this should be ...easy...shouldn't it ?

and it would still work if you input the 11 chracters..only..cause all of them would be the last 11 chars :D

thanks for the mod

As long you YouTube agrees to *never* change the number of characters in their video IDs, I see no wrong with implementing it in the next version. Thanks for the idea. :)

I really can't explain this. Make sure you've cleared your cache? No one else has reported the problem you're having with the mod, and on a clean install of 1.1.1, no less.

I like that idea. But, instead of hardcoding a number of characters, I would just look for the equals sign and extract everything to the right of that sign. Of course, I know squat about PHP coding and am only speaking from VB experience.

It's been discussed to trim all but the last ten characters contained within the

I just installed it on my test forum v1.1.1 cause my users really want it.

First problem the .gif didn't load (pacman said a ok when installed).
Second, nothing appears on the screen although the space for the box appears. I have read every post here and tried all the given solutions.

Same results in Firefox v1.8.xx, (not everybody waqnts to run the 2.0 beta) IE and Opera.

No problem un-installing it though.

I know this has been rough for you, but something is seriously wrong.

Guess I'll have to wait for the update.

First problem the .gif didn't load (pacman said a ok when installed).

Firefox 2.0 is a final release, not beta. You should consider upgrading. The image should be copied to the "bbc" images folder of your custom theme.

Is there a reason why the param (http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_param.asp) element was used with end tags? I thought the param element was a self-closing empty tag.

I have written my XHTML compliant flash (youtube) code like this...

I like forward to the next version, and hope that it will recognize previous youtube BBC tags that still contain just the youtube video id.

After installing this mod to SMF1.1.1 and Tiny Portal 9.7, it place at the top of all pages this code.

$txt['youtube'] = 'YouTube'; $txt['youtube'] = 'YouTube';

my site is here;

http://manichols7.com/forum/index.php

I uninstalled it but it left that code, so I reinstalled it to learned what files it modified and it place a second code there. I have uninstalled it again. Can you please tell me how to removed that code?

Ok, I went back a little and found the problem, I went to my form root and found the language file and deleted the code and it is now removed from my front page.

I just deleted the youtube and nothing else. Thank you for trying to give us a neat mod and I will try it again when you have improved it. Good luck,
Marian

There's nothing I can improve upon as far as the language file. All you had to do was post the contents of Modifications.english.php and I could've fixed it for you.

I've installed the mod today but I have some problems.

I uploaded the youtube.gif to my theme bcc dir and it works. I edited Modifications.english.php and Post.template.php of my theme (I use pdx-dk06).
When I type
, the post shows the code...
When I use the bcc button and I paste the yt code (like [youtube=425,350]SPE8vL5hlFA[/youtube]), I can't post because I get the error "The message body was left empty."
So if I add some words before or after the bcc code everything works and I see the video in the post..

It seems crazy  :D
What's happening?

I believe yo uhave to have the width/height parameters in there. As for it saying the body was left empty, I get the same error message if all I put in there is the youtube code. But, I normally type something in there along with the code anyways, so that doesn't bother me any.

I'm experiencing a bug, and I'd like to know if you can duplicate this mod on SMF 1.1.1.

When posting a message where the message body simply contains:

[youtube=425,350]43423432432[/youtube]

I receive the following notification:

Quote
The following error or errors occurred while posting this message:
The message body was left empty.

You have to type something in the body of the message even though you have that YouTube code, it doesn't recognize that as text.

Type the word 'test' for example, then use your YouTube code :)

Why is it the only tag that has to work like that? Posting just an IMG tag in the message body will work, why won't it work for the youtube tag? I've been into the Subs.php file trying to figure it out.

Got me there ??? Something with the mod I guess. Usually people on my forum will make a short intro before using the the code, e.g. Here's a funny bicycle accident, then use the mod to insert the YouTube value.

I also migrate from Yabbse to SMF for your MOD.

But I have one question,

After I use this, every post which has youyube tag will become slow to present.

Does anyone has the same isssue?

This is very strange, because I did not modify any code, and yet am no longer receiving the empty message body error notification. I forget if I changed something in the admin console, perhaps that could be it. Could anyone shed some insight into this issue? Because apparently I wasn't the only one who had this problem though it seems to have gone away, for now.

Right click the 'X' > propeties... find out where it is trying to load the image from... then go into that folder via FTP and just drag over the image from the YouTube mod zip to that folder in your forum.

I can post just a YouTube video on its own without an empty message warning. However if I try and edit the post via AJAX it won't let me without me putting text in the post yet if I modify the post the non-AJAX way, it is then fine.

Can anyone tell me what I should do?

Hello, I've just installed this mod on my test forum (1.1.1 with WoW dk theme) and I can get the button to show and that's about it. The code isn't working and I'm not sure what else I should edit.
I used the code as you said to (only using the end of URL).

Any help appreciated.

Edit:
Got it to work, yay!
I just manually edited the subs file. In fact, I had to manuallly edit everything including uploading the image(which didn't exist anywhere in my forum files)...nothing was modified with the install at all.

After reading this entire thread, I find that this mod will not work unless I manually edit a bunch of code. That makes it useless for me since I'm not a coder. At least now I can stop pulling my hair out trying to find out what I did wrong. I hope that eventually it's fixed so that we can actually install it with the package manager. ::)

Thanks for the reply, I'm glad it works for some people.

I'm using version 1.1.1 with the default theme and the only mods I have are:
1.    SMF 1.1.1 Update Package 1.1.1
2.    MessagePreviewOnHover    1.4
3. YouTube BBC Tag (XHTML Compliant) 1.0
4. Users Online Today Mod 1.3.1

I've installed it, tried to uninstall it but it gives errors and says it still wants to install it even though it's already installed. I deleted it, re downloaded it and re installed it with the same results. When I try to use it, it just shows the [youtube] tags. I don't know what else I can do!

Edit: Here's the error message when I try to uninstall it:

Error in Package Installation
At least one error was encountered during a test installation of this package. It is strongly recommended that you do not continue with installation unless you know what you are doing, and have made a backup very recently. This error may be caused by a conflict between the package you're trying to install and another package you have already installed, an error in the package, a package which requires another package that you don't have installed yet, or a package designed for another version of SMF.

Fixed? What's there to fix? Seeing as it works for 99.9% of all SMF users running 1.1.1, I'd venture to say that it's a problem with your forum, not with my mod.

Fixed? What's there to fix? Seeing as it works for 99.9% of all SMF users running 1.1.1, I'd venture to say that it's a problem with your forum, not with my mod.
I read this whole thread and I'm not the only one having this problem. There are several people that have posted the same problem that I'm having, at least two of them chose to install manually because they could not get it to install with the package manager. I have tried it on 2 different forums (both 1.1.1 with default (core) theme] with the exact same results! So even though I have always been able to install mods with the package manager, it's my forums problems that I can't install this one!!!!!!

Did you upload the package or simply install it via the package manager with the mod browser?

I uploaded the package from the SMF Mods page. I deleted the file from my computer the first time and uploaded it again just in case the original one had gotten corrupted.

I also tried to figure out how to do it manually but I'm not sure I did it right. If you could give me a list of files to FTP and what files/folders to send them to, that might solve my problem.

I also tried installing it in a third forum I have, also 1.1.1 default (core) theme, with the exact same results. In all three cases I can't even uninstall the mod, it gives this error:
QuoteError in Package Installation
At least one error was encountered during a test installation of this package. It is strongly recommended that you do not continue with installation unless you know what you are doing, and have made a backup very recently. This error may be caused by a conflict between the package you're trying to install and another package you have already installed, an error in the package, a package which requires another package that you don't have installed yet, or a package designed for another version of SMF.

I honestly can't explain why this is happening to you (and maybe one or two others). Extract the files to your computer and make changes based on the contents of the imstallation XML file.

Edit: I don't think I understand how to do that. It makes no sense to me. I open the XML file and it's a bunch of code. What am I supposed to do with that?

I tried that but it still doesn't work. :'(

It would have no reason not to work if you're modifying the code manually, unless the code you're searching for does not exist.

Thanks for taking the time to try and help but this is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy above my head. I can upload files via FTP and even change a line or two of code but I have no idea as to what I have to do to make this work. I'll just have to live without it.

Also had problems installing the mod and getting it to work. Uninstall gave the error mentioned above.

Went ahead and changed the two files (subs.php and post.template.php) by hand, uploaded them and the mod was working like a charm.

There are some issues with installing, maybe it has something to do with languages/themes (my guess), but manual install should be no problem.

I was struggling to get this to work until I saw this post, I'm used to embedding the whole code that You Tube provide for websites etc. Might I suggest that this quote be placed within the download page so we do not need to search through this entire thread before we find this.

I'm not complaining as this is a fantastic mod and I am really pleased to find it and know that once my members get used to it they will love it.

I installed though pac-man and it worked 1st time no problems whatsoever. Now just going to try it with the new theme (Millenium) we are hoping to use for the forum

Thanks for trying to help but unlike you folks, I'm not a coding pro, in fact I have zero knowledge of XHTML. I unzip the package and all I get are these three files:

youtube.gif

package-info XhtML file

yt bbc xhtml 1.0

I uploaded the youtube.gif to the images folder of my default theme but what in the heck am I supposed to do with the other two files? I opened them to find a bunch of code and some explanations that meant nothing to me. What am I supposed to change in subs.php and post.template.php??

I have never had so much trouble trying to install a mod. I wish I just had a list of the modified files that I could upload and write over the present ones. That would be soooo much easier than me trying to decipher XHTML codes.

Thanks again to those who have tried to help this old fart.

catfished, I'm gonna try to help you out. If you still can't get this to work, you can send me the necessary files and I will mod them for you and send them back. PLEASE, remember to make a backup of these files before yo modify them in anyway.

In yourforum/sources/Subs.php

Find This

array(
'tag' => 'hr',
'type' => 'closed',
'content' => '
',
'block_level' => true,
),

And add this after it
array(
'tag' => 'youtube',
'type' => 'unparsed_commas_content',
'test' => '\d+,\d+\]',
'content' => '',
'validate' => create_function('&$tag, &$data, $disabled', '
if (isset($disabled[\'url\']))
$tag[\'content\'] = \'$1\';'),
'disabled_content' => '$1',
),

in yourforum/themes/yourtheme/Post.template.php

Find This

'flash' => array('code' => 'flash', 'before' => '[flash=200,200]', 'after' => '[/flash]', 'description' => $txt[433]),

And add this after it

'youtube' => array('code' => 'youtube', 'before' => '[youtube=425,350]', 'after' => '[/youtube]', 'description' => $txt['youtube']),

In yourforum/themes/languages/Modifications.english.php

Find this (which will be at the very bottom of the document)

?>

And add this before it

$txt['youtube'] = 'YouTube';

That's it. Now upload the modified files into their respective locations and you should be good to go. I will say one more time, MAKE A BACKUP OF THE CURRENT FILES BEFORE TOUCHING THEM. For instance, make a copy of Subs.php and name it something like Subs1.php. That way, if something should happen during the modification process, you can rename the Subs1.php to Subs.php and be right back where you were before you tried modifying the files. ;)

It's really driving me nuts. :(

Any chance that you could link the full changed pages for download 4fit?

I could, but if you have other mods installed that I don't or if I have mods installed that you don't, it could mess things up pretty good. Can you give us a test account on one of your boards to see exactly what it is doing? Are any of the files failing when you try to install it through the package manager? Is it saying installed successfully, but you are unable to see any changes in your forums?

4fit?,

Thank you very much for taking the time to try and help. Unfortunately, I'm having nothing but trouble with this mod. I have spent many hours trying to solve it but to no avail. :'(

For starters, there is definitely no such code as this in my Subs1.php:
array(
'tag' => 'hr',
'type' => 'closed',
'content' => '
',
'block_level' => true,
),

I spent quite awhile searching for it, line by line and it's definitely not there, yet my forums work just fine without it. ???

catfished, that is the code to insert a horizontal rule in your post. Seems like it should be there. Strange. You are on 1.1.1, right? If so, could you post up the code from or attach your Subs.php? I'd like to take a look at that.

If your filename is Subs1.php, then that's why the mod wouldn't install. Not sure how it managed to become that either.

Search for 'tag' => 'hr', in Subs.php and then add my code below the array.

From what I know and can tell, it doesn't really matter where the code is placed in that file, as long as it falls with all the other arrays. So...

Find this (on row 1201):

array(
'tag' => 'center',
'before' => '
',
'after' => '
',
'block_level' => true,
),

and add this after it:

array(
'tag' => 'youtube',
'type' => 'unparsed_commas_content',
'test' => '\d+,\d+\]',
'content' => '',
'validate' => create_function('&$tag, &$data, $disabled', '
if (isset($disabled[\'url\']))
$tag[\'content\'] = \'$1\';'),
'disabled_content' => '$1',
),

Of course, the other modifications that I posted will have to be applied to their respective files.

Well thanks but as soon as I added that code, it crashed the forum with an error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ',' in /home/norcal/public_html/forum/Sources/Subs.php on line 1215

I simply replaced the edited file with the original to get the forum back but I'm about at the end of my rope here. I'm convinced that this mod is not going to work on any of my forums!!

Well this is the final straw! :'( I really thought I'd discovered the problem when I realized there were Subs.php and Subs.php~ files as well as Post.template.php and Post.template.php~ etc. The ones with the ~ were dated the day I originally installed the mod via the Package Manager. I checked all three files and found that they did not have the changes so I made them just as you instructed and renamed them without the ~. I then checked to see if my forum still worked and it was working fine. I anxiously tried the youtube mod and guess what: It still does nothing!!!! That's it!! The end!!! There is no way that this mod can ever be installed on any of my SMF forums.

LOL, I'm sorry to hear that; it's quite unfortunate that my mod doesn't work on your website. It's one thing if your forum is having trouble installing a mod through the package manager. It certainly is a very different problem if the additions my mod needs to make to files fail, simply because the search code (apparently) does not exist.

I wish I could help you further, but no one seems to have the problem you're having. Everyone that has had difficulty installing my mod through their package manager experienced no problems at all with installing it manually.

Well if I had remembered about using [youtube=425,350][/youtube] as suggested by matjazz (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=139271.msg890923#msg890923)
instead of just

I posted earlier that I found two Subs.php files one with a ~ after it. I renamed the one with the ~ and did the same with Post.template.php~ and Modifications.english.php~. I then added the codes for the mod to those files.

Guess what!!! I just found out it only works with Firefox!!! In IE7 it just shows a box with a redX:

Below is the same tag posted in Firefox:
(http://www.sabretalk.com/yt1.gif)
Now I'm totally confused. It was a heck of a lot less hassle to convert three IPB forums over to SMF a couple of years ago than making this mod work correctly!!!!!!!!

I just tested it on another computer with IE6 and it works fine so evidently the problem is in IE7. This can be serious since Micro$oft is forcing IE7 upgrade with XP updates, that's how I ended up with IE7, I certainly didn't want it. >:(

Update: I posted my problem on a geek forum and about 40% of IE7 users were seeing red X's. The fix is to install flash since IE7 evidently does not have it installed when you download it. Below are my comments on the geek forum.

Thanks everyone, I installed Flash Player and now it works but I'm going to get a lot of people saying they can't see the vids due to IE7 crap. I don't see why they can't have Flash installed out of the box since Flash is so popular. I hate %$#$# IE7 crapola!!!!

I've tested it out on many new versions of major browsers; all worked clawlessly. The idea of reinstalling flash to IE7 seems correct to me.

Was it only the Flash with my embed code that returned a red 'X', or was it all Flash applets?

Well, as long as it's working OK for you. :)

In my forum I don't know why Youtube tag remains unparsed. I have enabled html, flash from post settings. Checked manually that all 3 files are edited properly. But still the mod refuses to work. Tag remains unparsed.

Check the problem area: http://www.portal4webhost.com/webmaster_tutorials/all_cpanel_tutorial_videos_goes_here-t21.0.html#msg21

Any Idea where's the problem?

Use the [youtube=425,350][/youtube] tags. The way your tags are formatted will function only in the next release of this mod.

QuoteLanguage Integration

To make the mod work with your language, simple open Modifications.*.php, where * is the language you wish to integrate the mod into, and add $txt['youtube'] = 'YouTube'; to its own line in the file.

I use classic and it has no modifications.english.php file. And it's not working on the forum.

I have the .gif and I did edit the post template. There must be something I need to do in another file. Can you tell me what that might be?

Thanks.

Works for me. I use the Black Rain theme so I had to modify the youtube.gif with a white background. Otherwise it looked weird. Steal it if someone needs it...

My mod should make changes to only the default theme's Modifications.english.php file. As long as your custom theme lacks this file, it should function as intended.

Uh, if the movie file is hosted on YouTube, it shouldn't matter. Just in case you don't know, you have to upload the video to YouTube first before embedding it in the post.

Hi, first thank you for this mod. I'm really excited about its possibilities.

I installed it through smf package manager, and it seems to work okay in IE7, although I did notice when loading my pages I see the $txt['youtube'] = 'YouTube'; text in the upper left hand corner. But my background is black, so the text gets hidden as soon as the color loads.

In Firefox, of which I have the latest edition, for some reason the video freezes. It appears, but you can't click on it to make it play.

My theme apparently doesn't have the post.template.php file, only my default theme does.

Any help in this would be greated appreciated. I've read through this entire thread, and my head is spinning, but I do want to understand what I can do to make this work.

Also, I can't preview the post in either browsers, but I can save it, and then the video will appear. When I try to preview it just goes into "fetching" mode, and the bar at the bottom of my screen says "Done", but nothing else happens.

Thank you for your help!

[EDIT] I took down the attachment for the modifications.english.php, because I finally got it working. Two files were overwritten correctly, I think, but the modifications file just needed to have the code placed before the closure and not after. That took care of the code at the top of the page plus my Preview function started working again (after I had discovered that it didn't work for the video post or my regular posts before)

But it still doesn't work in my Firefox brower and in IE7, I need to click on the arrow twice to get it to work, and when I do it opens a new window to the YouTube site, as well as loads it in my post.

Marlon, I went looking through my files and I found quite a few files that have been renamed with a ~at the end. Not only the files that were supposed to be modified but others i wouldn't have thought would have been affected.

In the default/languages folder there are duplicate files and the ~ on one of each duplicate for modsettings.english.php, manageboards.english.php, login.spanish.php, login.german.php,  login.english.php, login.dutch.php, index.spanish.php, index.german.php, index.english.php, index.dutch.php, errors.spanish.php, errors.german.php, errors.english.php, errors.dutch.php.

In the sources folder there's a bunch more.

Are these duplicates with the ~ ? Can they be deleted or what do I do with them?

Could you, please, tell me why it still won't work in my Firefox brower though? It's like the screen is frozen and I can't click the arrow. In IE7, it works only if I click the arrow twice, and then it, also, opens a new window to the YouTube site, itself, in addition to playing in the post.

Okay, FINALLY, I understand. This is what happens when you're on the lower end of the learning curve.

I confused update with upgrade. I checked my Firefox and it did say I had the latest updates. But that's different from upgrades.

So for all you other newbies, to have this mod work in Firefox, make sure you go to the Firefox website and upgrade to the newest version of Firefox. It has to be a 2.0 version, and not just the latest updates for 1.whatever. ::)

Thanks for a great mod. :)

Because when I respond to a subject with a video, for example:
[youtube=425,350]FLgn64-bbwQ[/youtube]

At the time of sending the message, it leaves a warning to me saying that I must nevertheless write something but this the code of youtube.
[youtube=425,350]FLgn64-bbwQ[/youtube]

To the flank of the code I write a “point”, that if it sends it and it leaves the message the video with the point to the flank.

If they want they test.

First, you must use the R-ayk8xz5_A for that particular video, because that's the video ID, not the URL. Second, the mod doesn't appear to be installed properly.

OK I didn't use the URL but had v= in front of the code you said to use and used the package manager to reinstall it after the 1.1.2 update. It worked with that code prior to the update.

Hey guys. I installed the youtube mod on v1.1.2 in the hope that it may work but sadly not.

I was wondering if there was a timeframe for a compatible version to be released?

Also, I was wondering why this would happen even though I copied the youtube.gif file into all theme directories:

Coaxus and bilbojr, you're not using my mod with SMF's default theme. Move youtube.gif over from ./Themes/default/images/bbc to ./Themes/[theme name]/images/bbc.

I have installed it and written the tags in the right way (so I think) but there is no Video.

Your tags are formatted properly and working. I even copied one to my own forum which has the mod installed and working and it played fine.

I noticed that you aren't using the default core theme, I can only assume that this is the problem.

If you installed the mod with package manager on smf then it will only be installed to the default core theme. You will have to extract the package contents and manually edit and place the code for the mod into the relevant files for your theme.

When you create a new topic, do you see the YouTube button? It may not be installed properly.

The YouTube code itself works with any theme. The only possible theme modification would be to Post.template.php, should your custom theme have it.

That will take a decent amount of time that I don't have, at least at this point. To be completely honest with you, I haven't the slightest clue when it will be ready for public release.

For anyone else having difficulty with browser compatibility issues, I'll say once more that the outputted HTML that embeds the video in the post will not be changed. My mod has been tested and has been confirmed to work with all new versions of major browsers.

That's true. It's been confirmed, even before I released the mod, that the valid XHTML code WILL NOT function correctly in older versions of popular browsers. As stated earlier, the code used to embed the videos in posts WILL NOT be changed in any future release of this mod unless someone can brainstorm a way to embed the video into a post and still retain the page's XHTML validity.

I have installed this on my test forums (1.1.2), and while it the video works fine, I noticed that it changed the font settings of the forums somehow (could be my browser), and that there is some text at the top of the page that states $txt['youtube'] = 'YouTube';

Can anyone help with this? Here is the URL of my test forums.

Hello,

I just installed the latest version of this mod from SMF's web site. I am currently running SMF v1.1.2 and my browser is Firefox 2.0. The mod is not working on my web site. It is a fresh install of the board, no added templates, mods, nothing else. Once I click on the BBC icon and paste a video code inbetween the tags, it will just paste that code as regular text in the forum. Anyone know what gives?

Thanks,

Richard

Ok fixed the Quick Reply thing, that was a setup issue. The font issue seems to be an issue with IE, Firefox doesn't seem to have any problems. I've uploaded the Modifications.english.php file.

Though I do recommend that you uninstall the mod before upgrading and then reinstall it once your upgrade is complete. This rule won't apply to you if you use the package manager to upgrade rather than the full upgrade. It's completely up to you. :)

Disregard that message for now. Log into your SFTP server and CHMOD all affected files to 777. Once you've done that, then apply the mod. Let me know if you're still having problems.

I was able to installed this mod successfully thru Package manager.
Videos are now being shown using the tags.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to show the youtube.gif on BBC Tags.
So there's no shortcut on adding youtube vidoes except by typing the code
manually.

My forum is SMF 1.1.2 and I'm using Classic YaBB SE Theme

FWIW I couldn't get this to install through Pac-Man either. I kept getting a "The package you tried to upload either is not a valid package or has become corrupted." error when I tried to upload it.

Everything did go in OK when I manually installed it.

Running: SMF 1.1.2
Theme: SAF-Multicolor

Thanks for the nice addition to my forum ;)

I was able to installed this mod successfully thru Package manager.
Videos are now being shown using the tags.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to show the youtube.gif on BBC Tags.
So there's no shortcut on adding youtube vidoes except by typing the code
manually.

My forum is SMF 1.1.2 and I'm using Classic YaBB SE Theme

Any suggestions?

Move the youtube.gif file from the default theme directory to your custom theme's BBC images directory.

Make sure you tried to install my version of the mod and not the original and outdated version by another author (who went AWOL long ago).

In that case, navigate to your custom theme's folder and rename Post.template.php to Post.template.php.old. This should work for you, but please let me know if it doesn't.

Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus.

SMF: 1.1.2
Mods: TP 0.9.8

Couldn't get Pac-Man to work with this mod. But I did get it to work by manually editing the various files.

Works great! Though I was wondering if there's a way to make the size defaul. Do we always have to specify the size? 425,350? Just typing the tags without the size does not work.

If you click on the YouTube icon it throws the size in for you rather than typing it in.

Though not a bug, that fix will be added to the next release of my mod, should I choose to make an update.

question:

I installed the mod, but the video only shows as a white box...

unless I go to quick edit the post and save it (even without making any change), then the video comes up as playable, until I leave the message... if I leave and come back, it again shows as an unplayable white box...

any ideas?

Kindred, that's quite odd. It seems to work OK for me using the latest version of Firefox and Opera. I believe someone earlier in the topic had a similar issue; IIRC, he reinstalled the latest version of Flash, which fixed the white box issue.

Seem to have a similar problem.

Installed the mod, but it won't show a thing, not even a white box (tested IE7 and Firefox (latest version).

It doesn't produce the code, could that be a problem?

For a sample:
http://www.fencecheck.com/forums/index.php/topic,8550.msg132092.html#msg132092

(first video is entered manual with the Flash BBC button, second (not visible) is entered with the YouTube BBC button)

Why would it be? YouTube themselves provide any user with the code to embed their videos into remote webpages.

Hi... this is a great mod... I've installed it on some SMF forums and works great...

The only thing that could be changed is:

Let the option for entering the last 10 characters that identify the video or the whole youtube url... with some php you can check if there's the whole url or only the last 10 characters... something like this...

$arrContent = $1;
if ( strchr($arrContent, 'http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=') == true) {
  $arrRetVal = explode('http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=' $arrContent, 2);
  $videoID = $arrRetVal[1];
} else {
  $videoID = $arrContent;
}

Lately instead of $1 it should say

'content' => '<param name=wmode" value="transparent">',

The problem is i don't where to put the first code shown for making it work with either the last ten characters that identify the video or the whole youtube url...

Hoping for some help...

Greetings from Chile
MrAnderson

PD. I'm not good at coding so the first php code may be improved.

I've fixed part of the code for making easier the use of the tag... with this modification you can use [youtube=425,350] or just [youtube]

this part of the code
            <add>
            array(
                'tag' => 'youtube',
                'type' => 'unparsed_commas_content',
                'test' => '\d+,\d+\]',
                'content' => '',

This makes the tag work in one or another form... I'm still looking for making the content inside the tag work with either the long url provided by YouTube or just the 10 characters code that identify the video...

Awesome mod. :)

How hard would it be to allow only specific usergroups to post YouTube videos? I would love to have only moderators be able to posts vids.

I, too, am curious about this. I have 400 users I am going to migrate from a phpBB system, and they're used to using the full url. It'll be a pain in the a$$ to have to tell eveyone to use just the video ID string.

in your forum go to the admin panel. look on the left side you will see a tab for packages. after you press that you will select the tab for download and install and down at the bottom you will see where to upload the packages

Does anybody know what the problem with the code is that causes this to not work in Firefox 1.5? I am encouraging my users to upgrade to 2.0, and I understand that nobody wants to mod this to run on older browsers, but I wouldn't mind giving it a go myself, but I cant' seem to find what the problem is at all.

As stated in previous posts, the code I use to embed YouTube videos into posts is different from the code YouTube provides in that my version is XHTML compliant. The code used to embed these videos will remain the same. This mod has in fact been tested with all newer versions of most major browsers.

and yet... I can clearly show that over 90% of my users just see a white box where the video image should display.

The odd thing is that it works correctly for the user the first time they post or if we go in to EDIT the message and then save it.

Regarding that problem, Kindred, I've also noticed that issue on other computers with both same and different browser versions than mine. For some reason, browsers don't like the position of the video, as SMF puts it within a div. I'll have to look further into it.

i'm wondering how i might be able to install this mod without having to use the package installation tool? the problem is that i cannot get the package installation tool to work properly. i'd need an FTP account with root access on a remote Debian server, and i am not willing to do that just so i can install packages easier.

so, from un-gzipping the mod, what can i do from a command line to install this in a 1.1.x SMF installation??

thanks!

I do not believe there is any command line to install mods.

You can manually edit the files as indicated in the mod package...

The option is to check the xml file and see what is added to the proper files... and edit that files manually inserting the mod...

well, my brain is unfortunately not quite as PHP-compliant as most of y'all...

if someone can please post details on what i'd need to, in easy steps, i'd be most appreciative!

i can handle swapping out text, but there's no way i can read a PHP mod file that will tell me what to do!
Title: Re: YouTube BBC Tag (XHTML Compliant)

tethead,

I don't mean to be mean, but if you plan to run a forum with anything other than the default theme, you will have to learn how to read the mod package files and apply the mod into different themes. Most mods will only install on the default theme.

In addition, if you have to manually apply all of your mods due to a lack of FTP, then you REALLY need to learn it. the instructions are all there in the XML file within the mod package. it tells you search for "X" code... either add before, add after or replace, based on what the XML indicates.

ok, i figured it out, and it actually worked! awesome mod, thanks!

the hardest part was figured out the youtube.gif goes into the ../bbc/ folder within the theme's images, cause i just couldn't figure out where that had to be. works like a charm on Safari, Firefox, and Camino as far as i can tell, and i think the IE users would've commented by now if it weren't working there. not that i'd care what happens to IE users anyway... 8)

ok, i'm having same problem with firefox 1.x (i havent tested with 2 yet). in the subs.php file i changed the line to:

'content' => '',

which is the code used by youtube. it still doesn't work, for some reason it drops the closing tags and i get this:

so maybe if this is solved then it will work on all browsers?

ok, i found a work around for me. that is to use this mod instead:

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=390

and works ok now :)

Hi!

I've been using this great mod for some time, now. But recently some of my board user have been complaining. Some couldn't hit the play button of the video... (well, they hit the button, but nothing happens). And some don't see the video at all. All of the page loads, but not the videos.

All worked fine until some time ago, but now it won't work. Since I haven't make any change in my board, anyone knows if something changed at YouTube?

Thanks in advance,

Tell the members that can't click the play button to upgrade their outdated browser installations. Explain to the members that can't see the videos at all how to use the mod; that between the tags goes the video embed ID, NOT the video page's URL.

Hi!
Thanks for the answer. I'll tell those who can't click the play button to upgrade.
Then, the other ones (at least one I personaly know) uses Opera, and all worked fine until some weeks ago. (I mean, he could see videos with no problem).
This particular one has no problem with videos he uploaded (he hasn't really uploaded any, I think). He has problems with videos other users upload and that work fine with both IE and Firefox to other users (me, for instance) and don't work with him.
He said the whole page loaded but the video didn't. Instead he had a blank space....

I don't know if the recent "OnMouseOver" changes youtube made has anything to do with this particular issue.

But, thanks, anyway. I guess I'll have to tell all my users to get a decent browser. :D

I can't get it to work. The images is standing in the post box. The code is standing in the message box but when i try to put a youtube link or VideoID in it i don't get an Youtube screen (it just shows
).

(http://home.tiscali.nl/j.kooij/ms.JPG)

I putted the code in Modifications.dutch.php and Modifications.english.php. But still it didn't worked.

Modifications.dutch.php:
Quote
<?php
$txt['youtube'] = 'YouTube';
// Version: 1.1; Modifications
?>

Post.Template.php everything is standing right :s
i putted
'youtube' => array('code' => 'youtube', 'before' => '[youtube=425,350]', 'after' => '[/youtube]', 'description' => $txt['youtube']),

under
array('code' => 'flash', 'before' => 'http://',%20'after'%20=>%20'', 'description' => $txt[433]),

SMF 1.1.3 using Default theme

Downloaded the mod, uploaded with the package manager, test all passed, reported a good install, but nothing worked. No new button either. Checked my error log and all three files said permission denied.

Added the mod manually and it works great. Sure am glad it was a simple mod.

Thanks

Hey I was wondering if I could get some help on this? I am using a different theme I believe it's called damage. I don't have a modifications.english.php to edit?

Any help would be greatly appreciative..

modifications.english.php would be in your Themes/default/languages directory

To install it on different themes, you need to check what files your theme has modified away from the default and then apply the mod manually.

Hey Jim,

I'm in the same situation...default theme and the package manager borked out on me when attempting to complete the install despite all tests showing as passed. Even uninstalling it showed a red box error warning of dire consequences. :(

How does one go about manually installing this mod?

Didn't you read the mod description or instructions?

[youtube=425,350]y9A81egM6Mw[/youtube] is how it should be called in the message

@blankoboy

I read the xml file for the mod from the package manager and manually did the adds.

Yeah I got the red box warning when I tried to uninstall too. Guess that was because for some reason the additions had not been added to the files.

You have not added the mod's 'YouTube' text variable to Post.croatian.php. My mod is working as intended for you, it's just that you never modified it to your language.

Probably not to you. But for those of us who like to have our website XHTML valid then it's appreciated.

Type in your website and see if yours is XHTML valid. Basically if it is then it increases the chance of your website being more compatible with all the browsers and it's nice to know your code is clean and correct.

Nice mod! My site and theme is heavily customized, so the installer didn't do didley for me. But I manually moded the 3 files and put the youtube.gif file in the correct place, and it works great!

I always hated the idea of asking visitors to leave my site to view a video. Nice Mod! I love it!

Title: Re: YouTube BBC Tag (XHTML Compliant)

You need to provide a little more detail...

you installed correctly:
How do you know that you installed correctly?

it doesn't work:
HOW does it not work? Does it not show the youtube button on the post form? Does it show the button, but nothing happens when you click it? Does it load the code, but no video is displayed?

Are you running this on the SMF default theme? If not, did you bother to read any of the previous pages of this thread (or any other mod thread) that indicate that you will have to manually install portions of this (or nearly any other mod) if you are not using the default theme?
Title: Re: YouTube BBC Tag (XHTML Compliant)
Post by: Haguen on July 30, 2007, 02:13:56 PM
I use the theme default and the standard language

It happens like this: the option in the post appears normal and the tags also but the video doesn't appear, it is just his space in the post.

Almost too great.. I have to keep policing the files.. is there anyway to lock this mod down so only admins can use it ?
That way the guys could PM the URL for the vids they want posted and I can make sure I will not be ashamed or jailed for it's being on the site....

Thanks...

1- we apparently can not view that site without registering.
2- did you use the correct code to post the video?
3- is the video allowed to be called externally? Some youtube users turn off external access

Hi Kindred, thanks for you reply.

I was coming back on here to post something I just found out:

If you use Firefox (which I do) and you haven't upgraded to the new Firefox 2, the mod won't work for you. I just upgraded and it works perfectly.

Just go to www.Firefox.com for the link.

I don't know what it's like on IE. I'm just going to check.... It's works well. I have the IE7 which is the lastest one.

I hope this information helps some of you!

I installed the mod using the package manager and the tag works fine if you type it in but I don't have a button and $txt['youtube'] = 'YouTube'; is in the top left corner of all my pages. I know this probably has something to do with modifications.english.php but i don't have that file. i have settings.english.php

any help?

in modifications.english.php, move the ?> in that file to the end of the file...

as for the youtube button not showing up, are you uysing the default theme? If not, you will have to manually apply the mod to your theme's post.template.php

I don't have a modifications.english.php. I'm using the template back in black by crip. There is a settings.english.php
Is there somewhere I can get that file and add it to the directory?

Where else would that code be showing up since i don't have the above metioned file?

Give a look into themes >>default >>languages >>Modifications.(yourlanguage).php
You have it for sure (Modifications.english.php is always there).
As Kindred said, before "?>"(end of file), put:
$txt['youtube'] = 'YouTube';
It doesn't matter about your actual used theme..the added strings are "recalled" from default theme folder.

Title: Re: YouTube BBC Tag (XHTML Compliant)

Well, that's debatable.

The stray code at the top of the page is gone now. :D

But I think the youtube website might be down. No videos show up on my site, including the videos that were in the main page (Joomla) but I can't get into youtube website either. I'll update if anything changes.

Are there directions on how to do a manual install to the template for the button?

UPDATE:
Yes, the video is showing now. Yay!

Still need the directions on manual install though.

You'll have the instructions into the mod's file "modifications.xml".
However if I remember well the button "youtube" goes into the directory: ...yourtheme/images/buttons .

$txt['youtube'] = 'YouTube';

?>

Any suggestions?

You can't (if Ive understood) edit a post with only youtube codes without any word into the message.
Example
---------------------------------------------------
[youtube etc]codeyoutubevideo[/youtube]
______________________________
It's wrong!!
_____________________
Here is a video (this is the message body )
[youtube etc]codeyoutubevideo[/youtube]

It will work!

Try and let us know...it a very nice mod.

I'm having a similar issue.

I've installed the mod. The bbc is enabled in Admin>Post & Topics. The icon shows up for embedding the tag, but no video shows up. No box.. nada. I can, however, highlight an invisible box. (The google embed mod works perfectly, btw.)

I've tested it in IE and Firefox.

Ok, eventually it seems to be all right, it's to easy to make mistakes.

Now, the only two things that you have to chek are:

/Sources/Subs.php

array(
'tag' => 'youtube',
'type' => 'unparsed_commas_content',
'test' => '\d+,\d+\]',
'content' => '',
'validate' => create_function('&$tag, &$data, $disabled', '
if (isset($disabled[\'url\']))
$tag[\'content\'] = \'$1\';'),
'disabled_content' => '$1',
),
array(
'tag' => 'hr',
'type' => 'closed',
'content' => '
',
'block_level' => true,
),

And in Themes/default/languages/modifications.Yourlanguage.php:

Quote$txt['youtube'] = 'YouTube';

Don't understand where is the issue..there's no opportunity to make mistakes.

The thing is there were no directions on what modifications are being made in the MOD information. Only to add the line to post.template.php and the language one. Nothing about subs. Ill check the language one now, but i already did the post.template.php one manually.

Hi,

Quick question: I'm running SMF 1.1.3, and this mod works great for me. Installed just fine with the Package Manager. Only, I want to do away with the '=425,350' in the opening tag. I followed the advice from earlier in the thread, and made the suggested edits to subs.php and post.template.php. And I get the following results:

[youtube=425,350]Q5im0Ssyyus[/youtube] - works fine
[youtube=213,175]Q5im0Ssyyus[/youtube] - works fine (shows correctly at 425x350)
- doesn't work

It seems that it works great, it shows the video at 425x350 if I enter any two numbers for 'youtube=x,y' in the opening tag. I just can't seem to get it to work with a plain 'youtube' opener. A push in the right direction would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hello :),

Ok, for the code, I had already done that... here is the content of my Modifications.french.php :

<?php

$txt['uot_visible']='Visibles';
$txt['uot_hidden']='Cachés';
$txt['youtube']='YouTube';

?>

But the error is, if you can see in my previous post, in the Post.french.php

Any clue?

Hi,

I've uninstall the MOD and reinstalled it and still get the same error message witch is :

8: Undefined index: youtube
Fichier: /homepages/34/**********/htdocs/testfofo/Themes/default/languages/Post.french.php (eval?)
Ligne: 781

And still, here is the content of my Modification.french.php :

<?php
// Version: 1.1; Modifications
$txt['uot_users_online_today']='Utilisateurs loggués aujourd\'hui';
$txt['uot_yesterday']='Hier a';

$txt['uot_visible']='Visibles';
$txt['uot_hidden']='Cachés';
$txt['youtube']='YouTube';
$txt['myvideo']='DailyMotion insert Number';
?>

The weird thing is that the error is suppose to come from the Post.french.php file, on line 781... but the file as only 185 lines. :(

Can someone please help me to solve that mystery?! :'(

Thanks in advance.
Title: Re: YouTube BBC Tag (XHTML Compliant)

At a guess its probably line 781 of Post.template.php
Title: Re: YouTube BBC Tag (XHTML Compliant)
Post by: AfroSamurai on September 18, 2007, 05:46:56 PM
Ah ha! I've notice something... when ever I put my mouse cursor over my BB-codes buttons in the writing interface, there is a little "alternative text" that appears. Like for instance, if I move my cursor over the Dailymotion button, it pops "Dailymotion" ... but when I put my cursor over the YouTube button, nothing appears. This would most probably come from there.

So, can someone tell me where to fix this?
Title: Re: YouTube BBC Tag (XHTML Compliant)

Title: Re: YouTube BBC Tag (XHTML Compliant)
Post by: AfroSamurai on September 18, 2007, 06:49:27 PM
Well, actually that was not quit it... I manage to fix every thing!!! :D

Here's what I found and what I did to correct :

In the dm_bbc_xhtml_1.0.xml file, I found this :

<file name="$themedir/languages/Modifications.french.php" error="ignore">
                <operation error="skip">
                        <search position="end"></search>
                        <add>
$txt['dailymotion'] = 'DailyMotion';
</add>
                </operation>
        </file>

There was a error="ignore" and error="skip" to it...

So I've change to this :

<file name="$themedir/languages/Modifications.french.php">
                <operation>
                        <search position="end"></search>
                        <add>
$txt['dailymotion'] = 'DailyMotion';
</add>
                </operation>
        </file>

And re-zip it.

Then, in the yt_bbc_xhtml_1.0.xml file, these lines :

<file name="$themedir/languages/Modifications.french.php">
                <operation>
                        <search position="end"></search>
                        <add>
$txt['youtube'] = 'YouTube';
</add>
                </operation>
        </file>

were not there so I add them and re-zip it. Then, I did a reinstall of both MODs and everything is OK!!! No more errors!!!

Thanks for your help and I hope my solution is gonna help some people that encounter the same problem.

See ya!  8)

Hello here :)

First, sorry for my bad english... :(

I have a problem with this mod on SMF 1.1.3.

Manual install in custom theme, all work fine on FireFox or Internet Explorer 6.

But now, I have a problem with IE7. See screenshots attached.

Someone can help me ?

EDIT: Solution: update of the Flash Player for IE on Adobe website. ;)
