Simple Machines is proud to announce the release of SMF 1.1.4.
This release mainly addresses some security issues and fixes a few small bugs.
We urge all users to upgrade to SMF 1.1.4 as soon as possible to take advantage of these fixes. A summary of the fixes is as follows:
* Inline modification of a board which had moderators was not working correctly.
* Stop CDATA blocks breaking preview/quick modify.
* Allow users to log out in maintenance mode.
* Check GET and POST instead of REQUEST for numeric keys.
* Fixed editing grace period inconsistancies within the post script.
* Some input values didn't get escaped properly - reported by Michael Brooks.
* Some attachment filenames didn't get escaped properly.
* Function for fixing list and table tags wasn't working as expected.
For users currently running SMF 1.1.3, upgrading could not be easier. Simply log into your forum and visit your admin center - a notice should inform you an update is available. Follow the instructions to patch your release - this should not generally affect any modifications, language packs or themes you have installed. Alternatively download the attached patch file, upload to your "Packages" directory and visit the package manager to install this fix.
If you cannot upgrade using the package manager, please follow the instructions posted in the Online Manual about installing and upgrading.
For users currently running SMF 1.0.11, a separate version has been released: 1.0.12. Just like the 1.1.x branch users, you can simply upgrade through the admin center or download and apply the attached patch.
The same goes for charter members currently running SMF 2.0 beta 1. They can upgrade to SMF 2.0 beta 1.1 through the admin center or by downloading and applying the attached patch.
Finally - please do not use this topic for any support requests. You will get a much more prompt response by visiting the relevant support board!
Thanks,
Simple Machines
Thanks for posting this. I wish it was connected to my Admin panel, so I could had been alerted yesterday. I got my site unsuspended and I'm going to update my forum.
Indeed I can't believe this has gone unnoticed for over a day.
It was actually released just 15 minutes ago. The message was written a bit earlier :)
It didn't.
It was just released like, now.
Compuart's post came from inside the team boards and was split out.
edit: compy beat me
Which is usually how things work. They're posted in team boards, tweaked and such and then moved publicly. ;)

I know others said things, but my reply is the best
Someone needs to update this forum...
cool.
I'll start to spread the word.
Edit: BTW, SMF 2.0 beta 1.1 files say "files not found" when trying to download from the downloads area.
(even though 1.1.4's work)
I just thought i'd raise it. But you guys are probably adding the files their as we speak.
Okay, so the release was made 15 mins ago...
My site closed down over an hour ago...
Lunarpages really did screwed up. LoL
Thankkk
Thanks. Updated without problem. 8)
Yup. I've updated mine smoothly. Thanks.
I'm curious. Was I first out of thousands to update? LoL

Installed without a problem, but afterwards I now have three iterations of SMF 1.0.12 / 1.1.4 / 2.0 b1.1 Update in my Modification Packages listing.
Everything seems to be running fine, can I just go ahead and use the delete function on two of the duplicates?
the packages/installed.list file must of been written too 3 times. You can manually edit this file and remove two of those lines if you wish. Deleting the package would only remove one of the lines.
Thank you! I've update my forum without problems... I'm going to check the Theme now... :D
I would like to file an official complaint. >:( That was way too easy. ;D
What's the world coming to? No tar files to extract; no permissions to change; no sql scripts to run! I just might get spoilt. :P
I thought that was a compliment. :P

Simplemachines Cowboy,
Feel free to start a new topic in the support boards with help on this. So we can keep support out of this topic as much as possible. It gets very ugly in here when people ask and try to help others with support in a single topic about multiple things.

m
Mad - That may be caused by your host. Download an upgrade/update .sql files and run upgrade.php.
madfiddler,
Please ask in support, or since you are a charter member you can open a ticket (and even have us perform the upgrade) :D
I didnt know SMF could do something like that! lol. Cool.
I think there might be a small error on the downloads page(I didnt download there just looked lol) and where it says Small update and says Using v1.1.2? Shouldnt it say Using v1.1.3? ???
*still i am seeing SMF 2.0 beta 1, SMF @ 2006, Simple Machines LLC
here, using English (Britan).

I let one of the devs know and they will fix it shortly.
I'm just happy to see the server back after that downtime. SMF is so popular, the weight of the update notifications just crushed the server.
nitins60, Please start a new topic for any inquiries about the upgrade for easier tracking.
Yeah, server down and I couldn't upgrade because of that ¬¬ Thanks to God now I could do it and everything went smoothly O:)
PD: Now I have my random avatars here ^^
Done! Thank you :D
I'm just curious to why some of the errors with fixes I've seen in threads weren't fixed in 1.1.4.
For example in source/search.php
This line
if (!is_array($_REQUEST['brd']) && !empty($_REQUEST['brd']))
Should be
if (!empty($_REQUEST['brd']) && !is_array($_REQUEST['brd']))
Otherwise you receive an error in the error log about it not being found as the if statement is backwards.
Take source/querystring.php shows an error on the error_log about $new_var being undefined. It's missing the $new_var = array(); line shown below in the function
// Trim a string including the HTML space, character 160.
function htmltrim__recursive($var, $level = 0)
{
global $func;
// Remove spaces (32), tabs (9), returns (13, 10, and 11), nulls (0), and hard spaces. (160)
if (!is_array($var))
return isset($func) ? $func['htmltrim']($var) : trim($var, " \t\n\r\x0B\0\xA0");
// Reindex the array
$new_var = array();
// Go through all the elements and remove the whitespace.
foreach ($var as $k => $v)
$new_var[$k] = $level > 25 ? null : htmltrim__recursive($v, $level + 1);
return $new_var;
}
The other issue is that the patch provided in this post doesn't match the 1.1.4 source for source/display.php
The patch says to
<search for>
'name' => $attachment['filename'],
'downloads' => $attachment['downloads'],
'size' => round($attachment['filesize'] / 1024, 2) . ' ' . $txt['smf211'],
'byte_size' => $attachment['filesize'],
'href' => $scripturl . '?action=dlattach;topic=' . $topic . '.0;attach=' . $attachment['ID_ATTACH'],
'link' => '' . $attachment['filename'] . '',
</search for>
<replace>
'name' => htmlspecialchars($attachment['filename']),
'downloads' => $attachment['downloads'],
'size' => round($attachment['filesize'] / 1024, 2) . ' ' . $txt['smf211'],
'byte_size' => $attachment['filesize'],
'href' => $scripturl . '?action=dlattach;topic=' . $topic . '.0;attach=' . $attachment['ID_ATTACH'],
'link' => '' . htmlspecialchars($attachment['filename']) . '',
</replace>
However in the 1.1.4 file on line 1151 it shows it without htmlspecialchars. So which is correct?
The correct one is the one with the htmlspecialchars.
Also if any one has any issues with the upgrade please make a new topic to keep track of things better.
Any changes in SMF 1.1.4 to the default template files?
no
rsw, the packages have been regenerated and the missing htmlspecialchars is now there.
For anyone who already upgraded, if you used the full packages from the download site, you may wish to download it again, or you can patch it yourself.
In /Sources/Display.php
find:
link' => '' . $attachment['filename'] . '',
Replace:
'link' => '' . htmlspecialchars($attachment['filename']) . '',
You are not affected by this if you upgraded using the package manager
um I am kinda noob, just started with this.. where do I put the files? :P
thanks for the updates I guess ^^
See Admin > Packages.
Also a great release!
Just updated.
Nothing went wrong, so far :)
"You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!" Except all the files and the folder are 666 or better. What did I do now?
CHMOD the package directory to 777.

Time for me to update my forum...and inform those on an SMF forum I am simply a member on that this is out so they can update. :P
no problems here either - great work folks
Thank you SMF. Great job!
Done Thanks :)
Upgraded within just 0.00000000000000114 seconds...
whew. :)
no one can ever ever do this: vb? ipb? phpbb? who else???
Upgraded successfully and easy.
Thank you to the packagers, who made this job esay to me.
Trouble is, I'm getting an error big bright message on all my pages:
"Attention of Pn-Pn theme:
This theme doesn't correspond to the version of SMF that you are using. This theme is made for SMF 1.1.2 & SMF 1.1.3. "
I guess that's true - I'm using the pnp theme, and it's not made for the latest release.
Looking around the boards, I see the mods are programmed for the default theme, so I have no reason to think that a theme of my choosing should work.
This is a little inconveniant. I'm going to have to change from the beautiful pn-pn theme back to the default.
Shucks.
If there is no work around, then it seems that for the sake of maintaining a consistant look and feel,
I should stick to the default theme. Or, learn how to create a theme, and make one myself so that I know
it's inner workings well enough to tweak it for each update.
Is there a work around or a solution for this?
What else should I know about this manner of problem?
Thanks
Upgraded without any issues- Thank You! :D
Sunil_W - You're better off contacting the theme author about that in the theme's topic.

I can´t install this patch, when I try, I get some error-message ->

I have no mods installed :(
Cheers once again SMF folk simple clean upgrade.
Since I upgraded my default theme images are broken.
When I change the theme path to my other forum with 1.1.3 they're working fine..
Hi,
Just wondering if this upgrade will affect installed MODs? Or what need to be done to keep these MODs working properly?
Thanks.

I just had that happen to me on one of the boards I manage. Try going to the package manager and apply from there. For whatever reason, it doesn't seem to want to install the first time on some hosts (PowWeb).

It all depends on if the mods changed the code we need to patch. If they didn't, they will continue to work, if you use the package manage to install this update.
updated within seconds. Fast, simple and easy!
Thanks! :D
My jaw dropped last night when I saw the pink/red message that I should upgrade....and then hit the floor when it upgraded without a hitch!!! Thanks a ton guys! : )
Just out of curiosity, when 2.x goes production instead of beta, is that upgrade going to be just as easy, or is it going to be a world of hurt to established forums?
Upgrade was very easy, but took a while... simplemachines.org seems very slow right now, probably because there are so many people getting the new packages now.
thanks.

That happened to me when the server was lagging. Just wait for it to recover and try again. That worked for me . . .
Edit: By server I mean SMF's server, not yours. This forum is going extremely slow, and I guess that's because a lot of people is upgrading. Just wait for it to be a little less full of people and try ;)
Yeah, something is going on. I took care of what was doing the severe lag last night, but the processes look good right now. Might just be everyone downloading the update and being active on here.
Thanks for the update, devs. Upgrade went as smooth as usual. :) Six copies of the announcement was a bit overkill, though. ;D

Well, most mods will require a rewrite, and so will themes, so upgrading to SMF 2.0 will probably take a bit more effort. But upgrading SMF has always went smooth for me, compared to other forum software. :)

I just downloaded the full 1.1.4 install and it is still missing the htmlspecialchars.
I wanted to hand apply the patch to match sure it didn't interfere with changes I've made that how I noticed it as I did a diff from my site to the 1.1.4 full install.
I noticed one other issue. I would create a new thread but I think this is still dealing with the above.
In Sources/Subs-Post.php line 920 in 1.1.3 it was $entityConvert("\1"). 1.1.4 full shows \'1\' and the patch shows \'\1\'. Notice closely that the 1.1.3 and the patch both are \1 and 1.1.4 full is just 1. Which is correct? I'm assuming the \1.
Wow I'm surprised theres two more that are the opposite they are in the source but didn't make it into the patch. How can something be released with this many mishaps.
In Sources\Post.php the patch doesn't include the change to make all the edit_disable_time statements have the extra 5 minutes.
Same with line 2298 didn't make it into the patch.
'body' => strtr(stripslashes($msgOptions['body']), array('' => ']]>')),
Should I just create a thread will a list off these problems?
rsw686, please send me a PM with the inconsistencies.
Please do realize that this was a rush release.
Thanks.
Though we did some extensive checking, some last minute changes must've caused small differences between the patch and the downloadable version. Feel free to PM me any more changes you might find and I'll try to see if I can fit them in.

I upgraded manually and everything's fine.
Thankk you!
btw, I admit I just disabled the warning message in Pn-Pn theme (it displayed warning messages about language files that, according to the theme, were not up to date, but they were, so I told him to shut up and I'm glad it does not complain about version numbers now :) ).

Still waiting for the Version 2 to go out for the rest of us :)
anyway , i think the most important upgrades needs to be worked out are the SEO .

How exactly would I upgrade my mysql databases so smf is updated it there, without losing any information in there?
Hi, I'm new to SMF and had a question:
When I use the automatic-upgrade system from 1.1.3 to 1.1.4 will the files be overwritten or would they merge? Like I see, Sources/Display.php is edited and I did some editing stuff in Display.php, so I'm scared to lose everything.
If they get overwritten, what is the best solution to prevent this and still execute the update?
If you use the package manager system, this update will act like any other mod you install on your system.
brianjw, there are no database changes between 1.1.3 and 1.1.4, just file changes.

all ok. thank you ;)
Brianjw, after this, please post all support in topics in Install and Upgrade Help (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=10.0)
If you go into your database and into smf_settings, the smfVersion entry holds the database version #. Please note that it may or may not have changed since 1.1 final, so don't worry if it is 1.1, 1.1.1-3, or 1.1.4.
The DB version is set depending on which install package wrote the database or upgraded it. If theres no database changes, the db version won't change.

exxxplorador, that is because mods haven't been updated to say they support 1.1.4. Almost all of them should work fine, you just need to tell the package manager to emulate 1.1.3. Do a search for how to do this.

that link is created here and pulled by every admin page on every smf site.
Uaaahhh! Luv ya baby(es)!!!
It took about 3 secs (same problem with the whong and uncompartible files, but I've just waited several hours and tried again) and ran unnoted by the users.
All my midle-scale, non-english, custo-skinned and quite a modd-ed (some hadcode modding as well) forum does not show any failures, settings changes or errors!
Trying to do the same with the Invision (that forum used to run before) used to cost me about 20 days of pain, trouble and unpredictable result.
Thank you!!!!

Thanks guys for the update news :D
Well, it buggered up the custom themes on our forum. The directories on all 4 had been .../Themes/(zip filename minus the .zip) and after the update it was changed to .../Themes/(the name out of the theme's XML file) so none of the files or images tracked. The forum looked particularly nasty without the CSS... :(
The Admin had to replace all customized themes or hand-edit the paths in Admin > Themes and Settings. We went from 1.1.2 patched to 1.1.3 to the latest 1.1.4 patch level.

Well, if you purposefully break the way the system works, and the system tried to fix it to be correct, can you blame us?
All themes should be installed in a theme directory as indicated in the theme's XML file. If you want to change that directory, then change the XML file as well.
I tried to update but all I got was a blank page.
Hey, if the previous version installed the themes under the ZIP filename directory and then the LATEST update changed the theme directories on it's own, I fail to see how we're at fault. The 1.1.3 version should have installed per the XML and it did NOT. We did the installations through the THEMES function in the Admin panel, not via the cPanel. WE did not break it, the system didn't follow it's own rules (if you're correct).

The Simple Machines website is so incredibly slow right now... I tried searching, but didn't find anything.
Is there a detailed changelog for SMF 1.1.4 which tells us exactly which files were changed and, hopefully, which lines within those respective files were updated?
I've made too many changes to my SMF forum for a blanket copy over. That would screw up everything. It is not an option for me.
I had hoped that I would be able to tell by looking at the "modified date" on the files to see which ones were recently changed (I can do this with Wordpress). Unfortunately, all of them are timestamped at roughly the same time!
So, which files were changed?
All you need to download is download the patch on the first post and extract the files. You will find the 1.1.3 to 1.1.4 patch. Open that file and you will see a list of the search and replace lines that need to be done.
Package does not show up in my package manager. Only
* Gaming Avatars 1.0
* Personal Icons 2.0 2.0

Is this an error in my forum? Does it mean I must manually download and install? Or is it a transient problem... that I should try again in a couple hours?
There should be a box marked "Update Available" in the main admin page right under the main admin center box. In addition, there should be a link to install the update in the package manager "Browse Packages" page.
I have read in this thread where the Developers are looking at the package as some things may be messed up and/or missing from the package. If this is still true, should I wait a few more days to install this update?
Upgraded without any problems from 1.1.3 to 1.1.4
keep it up ;)
On Admin Center main page, I see only the admin center box at top, then the "live from simple machines box" which shows:
SMF 1.1.4 on September 24, 2007, 09:07:36 PM
A patch has been released to address some security vulnerabilities discovered in SMF 1.1.3. We urge all forum administrators to upgrade to SMF 1.1.4—simply visit the package manager to install the patch.
The only link is to this here forum topic. To the right of that box is:
Support Information
Version Information:
Forum version: SMF 1.1 RC3
Current SMF version: SMF 1.1.4 (no link)
(more detailed) < --- when I click that link, I get a temp file opening in my text editor! That happens sometimes, but I've never been able to figure out why. I use Firefox.
Forum Administrators: xxx
Under those is the box full of admin links "support and credits" "features and options" etc.
The Browse Patches box shows only:
Mod Name Version
1. SMF 1.0.7 / 1.1 RC2 Update 1.0 [ List Files ] [ Delete ]
2. SMF 1.1 RC2 Security Patch - 2 1.1 RC2 [ List Files ] [ Delete ]
My footer indicates I am "Powered by SMF 1.1 RC3"
So, shall I go do this manually or is something screwy on my installation and I should go post in the support forum?
Thanks for the help

No, please go ahead installing the update. The most important differences in the download package have been fixed and the others will be dealt with in the next release, but aren't important enough to warrant a fix at the moment (it would also create too many different versions which wouldn't be desirable at the moment).

Thank you. Done, and it was a breeze...even for my modified board. Good job.

If you are on RC3, you will need to do a manual upgrade (there was no package for RC3 to 1.1 final that I recall). This will require you re-install any mods you have.
I know it is probably painful, but you really should get updated. There have been many security and bug fixes since that version, some of them very important.
Can not modify index.php :(
(file mode: 0644)
it has to be writable (at least 755 if not 777) or it can't be edited.
How do I use chmod? (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=23690.0)
I'll say this again, since this is a new page:
If you require support, please post your requests in Install and Upgrade Help (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=10.0).

The link sent to my admin panel, for blackdollone.com, does not work. Could you please resend it or fix it. Thanks. Ltbrown-admin
be more specific... what error message do you get with the link?
that link is created here and pulled by every admin page on every smf site.
This one;
The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.
metallica48423, with mode 775 and 777 ditto error.
I change mode with total commander.
But any files have mode 664 and can`t cause errors.
PS
Sorry for my French :)
