Simple Machines is extremely proud to announce the long awaited release of the first public beta of SMF 2.0.
SMF 2.0 has now been in development for over 18 months, and in beta with our Charter Members since August last year. Feature complete, and having undergone considerable testing and bug fixing, we are now ready to put it into the hands of the public for wider testing.
Importantly, this is a beta - and the first public beta at that. We
strongly recommend that you do not use this package on a production site as it will contain bugs and issues. In addition whilst we'll do our best to support people running the beta our support team's primary focus will remain 1.1 during this period - so please be patient if you do experience a problem. Also, we request you note the following caveats:
- All existing mods and themes are almost certain not to work until their authors have an opportunity to rewrite them.
- The upgrader will do its best to upgrade previously installed themes. However, this is not fool proof and you are likely to need to tweak old themes and update them to take full advantage of SMF 2.0 functionality.
- Language packs for 1.1 will be out of date and need updating - this might take some time.
- Users who currently integrate SMF into their site using any of the non-standard SSI functions (Such as using the db_query function) will need to change their integrations to use the new query system in 2.0. More information on this can be found here (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=216143.0).
The changes in this release from 1.1 are immense - and we can't list them all here. We recommend you take a look at the changelog on the download page - some of the highlights include:
- Database abstraction including support for PostgreSQL and SQLite
- Post and attachment moderation - setup through board permissions.
- Additional group management features such as group moderators and joinable and requestable groups
- Comprehensive user warning system.
- Paid subscriptions to allow people to make a payment with PayPal to get additional group access
- Personal message labeling system and new viewing options
- OpenID (http://openid.net/) support - to enable users to login and register with their OpenID account
- Custom profile fields to enable admins to setup new profile fields in addition to the default
- WYSWIYG editor, to improve the user posting experience
- Ignore boards and ignore user functions - so users only see what they want to see
- Scheduled events and mail queuing systems to add additional functionality to the forum
- Admin and user logs to track who makes what changes to a user's profile
- A moderation center to bring together all moderation functionality into one place for all people with moderation abilities
The download packages are the same as for 1.1 - simply choose the install or upgrade package depending on your requirements. If upgrading please, please remember to
backup first. Please do not use this topic for support questions - use the dedicated 2.0 Support Board (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=147.0). Guides for installing (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=2.0;sort=subject) and upgrading (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=3.0;sort=subject) can be found on the Online Manual. Note that
downgrading is not possible.
On a quick note to mod and theme authors, we are currently working through the templates to move towards more semantic HTML layout. Unfortunately we didn't complete this in time for this beta, but this will make the next release, so please bear this future change in mind when looking at updating your mods and themes.
Finally, we thank you for your patience and hope you enjoy using this software as much as we have enjoyed making it.

Congratulations.
Finally, the first public 2.0 release.
I know the Developers have been working really hard. I guess we should thank their partners for letting them code instead of taking them out for dinner ;)
Thank you.
Awesome. Congrats to everybody who made this possible.
It's been a long time coming, but a joy for it to finally be here.
Great work SMF!
I cant wait, I am so excited, once again, Great job!

Cool SMF! Once this moves on in Beta 3, I'll be sure to install this onto my home server immediately! I'll download and install the Beta for now to mess around with it on another part of my site later tonight, and then I can give some feedback.
Hey, just FYI, I received the announcement email 6 times ;-)
Cheers on the release though!
Great work smf team ;)
Congrats to the devs. :P
Congratulations SMF!
Thank you very much all of you guys.
Thank you for this beautiful software :)
We apoligize if you get the email multiple times. There were some problems within the mail queue that were discovered during the release.

Congrats on 2.0 Public Beta 3 release!
Great job and congratulations for SMF 2.0! (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.forumscp.com%2FSmileys%2Fphpbb%2FGreat.gif&hash=d512f208f42bbf5df5861bfc71b3c2f5e9fa1c6b)
Congratulations! I am thrilled that the public can finally see what the hype of 2.0 was all about. :) I hope everyone enjoys trying 2.0 out. I would mention that people should be rather careful if they want to upgrade to 2.0 right away. You may want to try it out a bit with a copy of your forum to make sure it will work okay enough for you. This, while fairly stable in my mind, is still a beta.
Great work SMF
Finally it's here!
I Love You =))
Really nice job guys. I have installed it and I am playing around with it now. Congrats to all who have put the time in to bring this to us. And a big thank you from me.
Great!
digged ;)
Wow.........it's fantastic! ;)
Thankyou for all the hard work. It's genuinely appreciated.
Thanks to everyone who helped make SMF what it is today :D

I think you won't understand the first part, but I guarantee that is all good things :P
thanx for your work but all of us are using 1.4.4 will it be compatible with the database of 2.0 i have tried but it was unsucessfull
You cannot upload/apply it via the Package Manager like patches from 1.1.3 to 1.1.4
You need to replace the files, then run the upgrade in your browser.
You will lose any mods you had installed.
need i any tool for it? just my old forum and smf 2.0,is there any article about how to upgrade to 2.0
Woot :D
Group functionality? Nice, I tried coding that into 1.1, but this way, it'll save me a lot of time if I just got to port some mods, yay! :)
Now I know what to do in my next weeks, doing some testing and trying my best in getting AJAX and semantical markup into it to mess up your code. :P
No, really, great to see it getting complete. :)
eslao - Try looking on the Doc Site for upgrading. It's all there. The overall process hasn't changed since it was written.
Congratulationssssss :D
ım so excited when i see this topic :o Thanks for all
Great thing. Work on translations can be more finalized now. work in progress...
Let's go first announce it for people who don't understand english lol... ;D
FANTASTIC~!
Thanks to all developers, bug reporters and support people.
The gift of your time and talents is greatly appreciated. :)
I think that this release made/will make a lot of people happy. Congratulations and a big Thank You especially to the devs for their hard work on creating and developing this amazing wonderful software. Keep up the good work :)

Give it time, You tell me how fast you expect 134,601 emails to be sent :P
134,601 seconds? :P
A while, I know that :P That can explain for the fact that I had gotten a page generation time from this site of 72 seconds lol. Don't ask me why it never timed out, but it said that at the bottom of the page a while ago :P
great testing it now =)
Wow...That was kind off fast :P
Congratulations on the release!
testing too but waiting for the language files
Congratulations to the whole Team! Im testing it right now and I am loving it!

Although, to date, I have yet to receive an email, so perhaps I shouldn't speak before I do.

i got on here.. seen new board sections all over and im like "wuts going on? ???" and then i seen "2.0 support" and im like "check downloads!" :D
going to have to give this a try :p
Finally! I've been dying to try out 2.0 for quite some time now, and it does indeed deliver some interesting and much needed features/improvements. On my test forum, the page generation time (loading Board Index) seems to have increased by about 40% after the upgrade however, from a fairly stable .05 to .07... :-\
congrats! great work guys

If you're still using my pretty URLs mod, I hope to get a beta 3 compatible version released soon (hopefully within a couple of days). I'll post in the mod's topic when I do.
Will the Ad Management mod be supported?
I have stumbled: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=228921
Alternatively: http://www.stumbleupon.com/url/www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php%253Ftopic%253D228921
Apostaganha: its up to the mod's authors to update their modifications, but yes, i am fairly sure jerm will update his ad management mod for 2.0 Beta 3 Public
...Upon further review of the play, SMF has scored a touchdown and wins the game! Great work everyone! I'm eager to get my hands on this version.
I'm sure it's a relief to many that it is finally out there to the masses.
Thank you to all those that made it possible.
I think from now on, I'll ask you guys to move my congratulations posts...
I feel like I always publicly tell you what a great job you've done after a hundred others do.
Nice Work

I very good surprise. Thanks to everybody who took part in doing this.
You guys are GOD's, or atleast you are amazing, cant wait to try this out
Joe
thank you very much
Anyone think that SMF 2.0 will be much more efficient than 1.0 version for databases on our servers?
After looking it over, there isn't enough features I see that would make it worthwhile for me to lose my custom themes on the 1.1.X series. I'm a bit excited at the idea of 2.0X but I don't want to lose my themes and customizations if there isn't a lot of good features that make it worth it. Thats why im wondering if there is huge increases in optimizations for database queries for 2.0. cause then it might be worthwhile to upgrade
casty,
To be honest 2.0 is comparable speed wise to 1.1 - it is unlikely to be significantly faster. That said I suggest you check the changelog as there are many more features than in my annoucement post.
Grudge
Wooo this is a great day :)
Localhost Upgrade time 7 minute :D
Thank you SMF team :)
This is great ,Thanks!!
Great news!
Can't wait to test it!
I'm sure it's great!
Great work, thanks a lot! :D
Also can't wait to test it!
Well done! I look forward to:
Quotemove towards more semantic HTML layout.

so far, phpbb3 claims that their software is better than smf1.x . i am very curious to see their reaction when their software will be compared with smf2.
just a question. where can we get a full change log of our new software?

See the last item on the Downloads page. SMF 1.1.4 and SMF 2.0 Beta 3 public's are there.
http://download.simplemachines.org/
See Changelogs.
@decas. I'm more interested in how its comparable to the market leader, Vbulletin.
I took a look at it, it seems decent :) but why no new special SMF2.0 theme? It still has the old boring 1.1.4 theme.. I thought it would have the one like these forums. If not, then its a bit misleading...
Good job all the same :)
As someone famous and mostly likely dead once said.
Don't start wallpapering until you've built the house.

Wow. It's worth waiting for. This is great. Thanks a million guys.
well done guys, my first forum was on a beta 3 public, that seems so long ago now. Can't wait to investigate it!

Try the SMF 2.x Support Forum (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=147.0).
Hi, it's good that smf, but.. one thing is still missing.. my users are always complaining about sorting in each boards.. I know, that there is alphabetical order, but you can do it as in the member list, with A B C D E F G...... that would be really great !
I've got a mod to do that for 1.1.x. Topics Filter
I will be updating it as with my other smf mods at some point.
Great work SMF. Good stuff. This was a total surprise to me. I thought it would come out at the end of this year.
Congrats to the development team on this release.
I'm drowning under Uni work at the moment, but when I surface for air I'll be installing the beta release on a test server and importing a copy of my main live forums.
I look forward to playing with the new features - a lot of them, though not necessarily "major" from an end-user perspective, will make the Admin job a lot easier and more convenient.
Sunil
I'm a bit late but still... Congratulations to the team for finally getting a beta available to the public ;)
I've only been on the beta testing team for 3 months, but it was more time than needed to realize that all developers are extremely gifted in their area, which nearly makes up for their spelling. (Okay, that was a given eheh.)
I'm also proud to be somehow part of this by having contributed a few lines of code. And everyone: beware of Karl! If it weren't for him, you'd be fighting against 200+ more bugs undocumented features hidden in this release ;)
Now, onto the next Beta! Yeay!
Just a quick question...
Are all of the new features implemented in this Beta?
As far as I can see, warning system doesn't work? Or am I looking to the wrong place :)
Well those are some of the new features since the last public release. Not everyone of them was added between beta 2 and beta 3 ;)
Now some options need to be enabled before you can see them. Check the core features page of your admin control page.

Thats the reason its a beta ;)
The only issue with the warning system known is it doesn't mute users like it should. This was reported to our bug tracker. If you find a bug with SMF please report it to our Bug Reports board (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=137.0)
How well would a modified Babylon theme from 1.1 series work on the 2.0?
Why don't you try applying those edits to the 2.0 version of Babylon? Otherwise you could use a file comparison to see what you need to change to make it work.
It depends on how modified. The Babylon has been updated to work for 2.0 though.

I see... The pics for "post moderation" and "paid subsription" must've confused me... with all the red NO-NO sign, I thought it's not yet implemented... Same goes for warning system... BUt I guess it works... Just the pics in admin are not right...
Congrats and thanks for the hard work! 8)

Yeah. :) Interesting!
[Unknown]'s tutorial sets up the variables so the values members entered are stored in the themes table, just as 2.0 does as well. :)
8) Man, I am definately excited to see the Wysiwyg editor. With the development of SMF 2.0 and the Jfusion which integrates Joomla 1.5 and SMF boards, life is getting really good.

I've not had a chance to test yet (and I've not seen that tutorial before), but the real question is whether the Custom Profile Field mod does the same...
I'll play around with this at the weekend. If the CPF mod uses the same DB fields (if I remember rightly, in smf_themes), then in theory all one needs to do is make the same type of fields with the same name using SMF2 Core, and they should show up without a problem...
I wonder - if one has lots of fields - if there's an easier way of transferring this across... I'll have to check.

I just went through this issue myself with my Custom Profile Fields Improved mod.
http://wgnrs.dynalias.com/smf/customprofile.html
I built a converter to migrate the data to the built in profile fields. You could either build your own converter or before upgrading to SMF 2.0, convert from the Custom Profile Field Mod to my Custom Profile Fields Improved. Then install SMF 2.0 and convert it again.
Good job !
Congratulations !
and good luck for the next releases !

I built a converter to migrate the data to the built in profile fields.
If I understand correctly, your mod has extra tables, and you convert them to use the smf_themes table instead? Wouldn't it be better to convert your mod and still make it use extra tables? I've been thinking of doing that for a while -- and, yes, it's a pity that I can't use SMF's built-in system, but I'm planning to add dozens of custom profiles for my specific needs, and it would be a very bad idea to load them into the themes variable on every page load when they're really only needed on the profile page.

I built a converter to migrate the data to the built in profile fields.

Yep my mod uses 3 extra tables. Keeps it all nice and clean. I just got a lot of grief over the mod interface being almost identical to an existing mod even though the coding is 99% different. That alone turns me off to re-writing all the SQL queries to be SMF 2 compatible. If I do anything it will be to improve the built-in custom profile field interface. I want to add a popup on the posts like I had in my mod.

SunilDVR,
It is unnecessary to do what rsw686 suggested above. See my post here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=79004.msg1474177#msg1474177
Hi winrules - I figured out as much elsewhere in the thread. Thanks for the headsup - your method is certainly easier than a custom SQL command if someone doesn't have access to (or isn't comfortable with) a tool like PHPMyAdmin.

Is this only about the query rewriting?
You do realize you can replace most of them with a simple search/replace?
You could even bypass the security system ({string:something}) if you're confident your security is good enough, by using a special parameter in place of "__FILE__, __LINE__" (again, simple search & replace).

Seems to look good, although I can't install it on my boards (most of them are already using SMF2, and one of them is a very old 1.1 rc2). Will have to see. Would you like me to do a quick attempt at converting the mod? It could be an incentive for me to start doing my own custom code based on yours.
Could? It is! :P
Excellent work.
Wow. I upgraded my test forum to this and it was flawless. There are only issues with some of my mods and the Autumn Dark theme I'm using, but with the default theme everything looks and works great! I can't wait until some of the mods that I use are updated to work with 2.0 so I can test them out. Great work.

...as it should. :P
Thank you very much to all that are involved in the production of such excellence. It is truly spectacular!
awesomeness!!!

the upgrade is stuck on this line...
Cleaning up some 2.0 Beta 1 permission profile bits...........
what should i do? its been like 20 mins now.. i tried the step again but its still stuck...

Please ask in the 2.x support boards :)
Great improvement on 1.1.4 Well done the team ;)
Anyone knows iaf any improvements have been done to the SEO? Does 2.0 works better with the search engines?
The SEO is much the same as 1.1.x. Works fine with search engines.
(Although IIRC I think a couple of extra duplicate content pages had noindex set on them).
So how do we get the new theme? I really like the look of the SMF forums and would like to see this theme included in the next beta release.

This has been said so many times already...
The theme changes have not been made in beta3 yet. In a future beta/RC they may be made.

I realize it is a simple find and replace. However whats the point of the added security 2.0 has if you bypass it? I would want to code it to take advantage of it. There would probably have to be changes to where the admin interface for it shows.

I still think a better move would be to improve the built-in fields. This would make more sense than having duplicated code. I do hate the fact that the built in fields clutter up the themes table. I don't think that was the best move.
The downside to the separate table is it makes multiple database queries when showing forum posts. There really needs to be a better cache system implemented than my rudimentary static variable. Mine only caches for that specific page load. It needs to take use of the SMF cache system and hold the data for multiple page loads.

http://wgnrs.dynalias.com/smf2/metatags_1.0.zip
Custom profile fields have always been stored in the themes table. It just didn't have an interface to add them. We did look into moving them outside the themes table but it turned out to be better leaving them in there.
The purpose is to remove redundancy and make sure when we are inserting it, we are expecting it to be the input type.
Before a input variable might of been cleaned, cleaned again, dirtied, cleaned, then dirtied again. All this work just to get things how we needed them. Now they are left how they are and only treated when we are going to use them. So this means they are cleaned on input. This really helps SMF remove unneeded work. Repeating yourself and doing wasteful work is not efficient.
The security override option is just that, an option. If you are cleaning everything you put in. Then you don't need the security override option. I have only used the security override once. I plan on updating the script as well to remove that need.
I must say I've honestly not played at all with 2.0 even as a charter member. I was curious and became a charter member knowing that some day I would give it a whirl. Welp its public and now I feel like a slacker. hahahaha
I guess I'll have to give it a try on another server so I can compare 2.0 and 1.1.4. Im really excited about the emailer system.
Thanks everybody and thanks for the hours and hours of work.
Kudos to the devs. SMF 2.0 adds a lot of things I've been looking for.

Oh, it's only for speeding up the conversion process. When it's ready, and it works, you have all the time you need to do a proper conversion, line by line.
QuoteI would want to code it to take advantage of it. There would probably have to be changes to where the admin interface for it shows.
Yeah, from my experience in converting mods to SMF2, the admin area changes were the most annoying.
QuoteFeel free to convert it. If you get it working just give me credit somewhere.
Oh, I'd never release a mod under my name. I'd just send you the converted code.
QuoteThe downside to the separate table is it makes multiple database queries when showing forum posts.
Of course, there's also a third solution (which is what I'm going to use) -- never use these extra profile fields in the Display template. Only show them in the Profile templates. That way, it's perfectly logical to have them in a separate table. While "embedded" profile fields (for Display template) could use the default SMF2 behavior.
QuoteThere really needs to be a better cache system implemented than my rudimentary static variable.
Also, I like using serialize/unserialize on an array to get everything into one place. (Thanks to eldacar for the tip on this practice :))

Why don't you just install it onto a localhost on your computer? Download a program (google them) like WAMP or EasyPHP or XAMPP/XAMPPlite and then just put SMF 2.0 on your own computer to test it out?
There has never been a demo ACP for smf because, well, it's free software. (I was corrected, see below.) You can just put it up on your own site or localhost and test it out. The only reason software like vbulletin and IPB have it is because, otherwise, you have no idea what you're getting as you buy it.

/me bites her tongue.
Well, the suggestion still remains. It'd be easier for you to simply test it out on your own system than for SMF to provide a working demo with the right restrictions to ensure that the demo remained available and working.

Outstanding. I'm really impressed.
Of course I'd never run a Beta on my forum, but I've set up a test site on my localhost and I've spent hours messing around with it. What I like best is the paid subscriptions feature, and many of the mods that I currently use are already features on 2.0 which saves me a ton of work, for which I am forever in your debt.
Of course I'm forgiven for having itchy palms at the thought of new themes for this baby :D
Very well done, and thank you so much for your efforts.
Is I can now specify xmpp/jabber/GTalk in my profile?
Mmh... Why the default theme installed in the released beta is different from the one installed here?
simplemachines.org has always had a different theme.
And I wouldn't want this one either.

That chart is VERY biased too. SMF can do the same thing featuring around their features.
Indeed. Very biased, and quite a few lies there as well. Including, but not limited to, Forum Subscriptions, Address Book (by buddies) and multiple move posts, all which PHPBB says SMF can't do.
Keep in mind that they compare SMF 1.1.4 :).
Lets not let this turn anti phpbb though -- they are a good software led by good people -- this thread is to celebrate the release of the first beta of our 2.0 version :)
And also rather than moaning about the inaccuracies, why not contact the phpBB team to have them fix it. I know that they want it to be as accurate as possible. There's bound to be a few inaccuracies as could you expect them to know the ins and outs of SMF? :P
I intend to.
And I only looked at what 1.1.4 can do. SMF 2.0 probably won't be considered until it's at least in RC stage, for them anyways.
This is great.
But since I have not renewed my Charter membership, I have been reluctant to contact support on changing to the latest SMF 2.0.

Alternatively, there is a site (http://www.opensourcecms.com/) which allows you to try out the admin panels of many CMS and forum systems.
It's currently still showing SMF 1.1.4 - I don't know whether they would only use the final version - but it's a very handy site for trying out different software packages.
Alternatively, as has been said, XAMPP or similar on your own computer!

Congratulations to the team. Nice work.
I'll be setting up another test forum in the next few days so our staff can begin familiarising themselves with SMF 2.
We wont actually run it on our public forum until TP 1.0 is ready to roll in conjunction with it.
Even though this version is released I will wait a while so more mods work with it and it is more stable. :P
i was expectin theme like this community
i mean the theme applied on this community looks cool
smf 2 should have improoved theme
after phpbb3 smf has to work hard on default theme
what you guys think about this
It's already been discussed and being acted upon. We are working on a semantic version of the current default theme, then a new default theme will be produced.
great job guys....been busy have not had a lot of time to test out smf on my beta server.
i'm scared to death to even try the upgrade
Why? The upgrade has had very few issues. Simply back up your forum files and database before you do and you'll be fine.
Is there an upgrade patch yet?
Thanks for all the hard work !!!!
The new software is awesome and takes SMF to a whole new level. I have already started building with it and cant wait till the mods themes and TP catch up to it so i can move my communitys over too 2.0 and with all the new features it will make my life so much easier. Keep up all the great work !!! You all rock !!!
Thanks from the Chiphunters2 communitys !!!!
I don't think there's going to be an upgrade package, if that's what you mean. You'll have to do a complete upload of all the files from the Upload choice available on the downloads page.
There is never a package upgrade between versions because of the enormous changes that take place. Likewise, there are no package updates for non-release versions. You must do a manual upgrade in these cases.
So cool!
When will their be a spanish version?
Thanks!
I believe language files are being worked on right now.
Congratulations. :)
The update worked very well.

It depends on the errors you're getting, and no there's currently no chat mod available for 2.0 that I know of at least.

changelog.txt, see the download section.
Wow, some night reading. I'll guess I'll find out when I upgrade. Version 1 has been great so far compared to phpBB2. I have had big problems with spammers but now they are gone.
SMF 1 to SMF 2 is primarily a backstage upgrade. Database support has increased, admin and moderator features are on par with the market leaders, and key features such as post moderation and a warning system have been integrated. Users won't see much of a change, but the new version also opens up many more possibilities for mods, such as YodaofDarkness' Advanced Reputation System, which is a great improvement over the built-in karma. And it's very obvious to users as well.
Thanks for the info. Right now my members behave but it's good to have good moderation features.
Just wonder: www.diyaudio.com has a good feature regarding email and how to keep it hidden but still use it.
Noone can see an other members email address. If you push the email button YOUR email address will always be revealed but the reciever can choose, either to keep his address hidden and send a message back or let it be revealed. Is there a similar way in SMF 2? phpBB had the email exposed in clear text and was a Christmas day for spammers.
that is built-into SMF 2.
There is a mod for it for 1.1, though.

Hello.
I have installed 1,1 4 version in my website and it is working great. So in my test site I upgraded to 1.14 and system blocked it because of copyright persmissions, probably authors text in bottom of forum. Well. I can"t fixed it and later I deleted my test forum. Reason of copyright error is unknown, but I am still afraid to upgrade version above 2,0 beta 3 public.
As I see there is no jet support for themes and what I need is great Amber theme which was been as defult theme around two years. Some news from themes developers?

You cannot remove the copyright at any time if you want to use SMF. That is it. There should not be any problem with any upgrade. Please read manual for upgrading from 1.1.4 to 2.0 beta. It is still not advisable to run 2.0 beta for public use yet.
is there a list of new features compared to realease 1.1.4?
Just look at the changelog on the download page, or the first post of this topic, and the first post of the Beta 1 and 2 announcements.
is there a list of mods that will work with 2.0?
I'm just looking for a mod that will bring side bars on like I do with TP...
Or is there an alternative to TP that will work with SMF2?
You can use the Advanced Search options to filter mods for 2.0
If you love it then Digg it! ;)

Keep up the good work and looking forward to see it on a final stable release.
he guys...i know there's a warning not to use the beta's on a production site, but simplemachines.org runs on SMF 2.0 Beta 3 Public, and thats a full big forum...
is there a difference in the risk if someone uses it as a little forum or a big one like simplemachines.org ?
Any news on when to expect the final ?.. ;)
SMF also has the whole dev team able to bugfix on their forum. The reason why Beta 3 isn't recommended for production use yet is because there would be too many support requests for the staff to handle. Beta software is understood to be buggy, it's not smoothed out yet. There have been numerous issues with these forums, the most famous being IE's code select problem. Yet they're able to get quickly smoothed out by the devs here.
If Beta 3 was released as the final version, SMF would be putting out patches every few weeks. I'd prefer they keep it as a beta, collect the bug fixes/feature improvements in one big package to give us Beta 4 or RC 1 whenever it happens.

Last time i read a developers comment on that in a public forum (i think a dev blog) it was said final before the end of the year. Although I'm not sure whether that was in jest.
off topic, but what does RC 1 stand for?
and explain this IE's code select problem...
thx,and sorry for the off-topicness
Release Candidate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Release_candidate#Release_candidate)
Is anyone running this release on a production site...and how is it going ?
A few people are running 2.0 Beta 3 Public on their sites, Multi Talk 2 is, as is this forum you're posting on right now. :P
well i have a small forum....
like 7 forum cats with a total of maybe 120 topics...
would it be to dangerous to upgrade ?
Well I'm in no rush to upgrade. Even when it's gone from RC to final I'll most likely leave it till we have more hacks/mods are updated for it

My community is larger than that, and is running 2.0. So It shouldn't be too much of an issue to run 2.0 on your forum. But do be aware that bugs can pop up. At the end of the day, it's your call entirely.
thanks,yes i realise that..
the only thing / mod i have installed that i would care about is the mod that you can show banners....
But i have no idea if that guy updated it yet...
Ad Management? No, it hasn't yet.
ah thats a shame..
to bad they are so behind on the development.. :(

Remember that this is just a beta, not an actual release. Also, the theme code will be changing soon, so mods that touch the themes are likely not to be updated until those changes land.
So does anybody have any idea when the final release will be ?
"When it's ready."
As already mentioned, no.
I am sure we will have another beta and at least a couple of release candidates prior to a final release.
Getting the bugs fixed and things tweaked are the biggest concerns right now. We are generally not a group to put out a shoddy software release to meet a rollout date. Generally when the developers feel the software is ready for production sites to begin using, as with most softwares, is when we will release final and begin looking forward at the next version :)
a few huh... ;D
ok that sure indicates it will take a long time....,atleast i know what time period were looking at..
thank you. ;)

I believe Grudge (one of the developers) said the project has failed if the final isn't out by the end of the year.
thats 8 looooooooooooooooooooooooooong months :)
There will be other releases than just final though.
But yes... as Motoko-chan stated, the goal is years end
mmm ok, i understand the importance of betatesters but when the goal is end year...,isnt it a bit to much publishing the 2.0 as an "available download" to the public ?

I don't think it was said very well. We would certainly like to get it out sooner rather than later. The release date will depend on how many and what kind of bugs are found. If we don't have many past the current beta, the release will come faster. If we somehow get a tricky bug or several big bugs reported, the release will probably be a bit slower.
The betatesters are actually the third level of testing of the beta.
Firstly, the admins (developers, mostly) test things here with each release as well as on their own development boards. They submit changes/bugfixes to the SVN server.
Secondly, some of the team members test the versions, often on their own sites/test boards. When they find bugs, they submit them to the bug tracker.
Thirdly, the beta testers test things in depth. They submit the bugs to the bug tracker.
Fourth, the charter members get the beta. They report bugs to the team/beta testers for testing, and they report to the bug tracker.
Lastly, the public gets the beta version. They report bugs to the team/beta testers for testing, and they report to the bug tracker.
In my view, it is a good thing to allow a public beta at some point as you get a wider cross section of configurations and experiences, and it gives you the ability to take that feedback to tweak and bugfix things that might have otherwise been missed.
This is why we don't reccommend using the beta version in production, it hasn't made it fully through each of the primary testing phases. It is good for people other than the team to be able to try things out and give their feedback.
This is a common practice many places, really. Many groups release their unstable versions to take advantage of that filter.
Granted, it does create a support scenario that isn't as tight as it usually is, but that changes as each member of the community and the support team acclimate to the changes.
Got to love the software development cycle :)
In addition, it gives others such as mod and theme developers more time to acclimate to the change as well which means faster roll out of modifications and themes.
In the end, it is simply to help us put out a more solid product. It is a win-win-win situation :P
that was well explained.. ;)
but thats some path to follow.. 8)
but the ones with lesser knowledge maybe gets a wrong idea when the 2.0 shows so openly.
even with my imagination i would assume a quick release seeing it like this..
but never like...end of this year... :D

wow Thats really great
but i wanna ask that where from we can download the Themes of SMF 2.0 Beta 3
You would have to look on a theme by theme basis. I see they are being updated by authors as time goes by. You can see some 2.0 themes here smfthemes.net (http://www.smfthemes.net)
The .net domain is used just for 2.0 and its themes.
Dziner Studio (http://www.dzinerstudio.com) has their themes converted to 2.0 as well. And they have some pretty awesome designs.

Funny you should mention that. I know nothing about software development and I've seen people bouncing up and down for a final release since I started using SMF in mid-November 2007. Just looking at the progress through beta I was thinking to myself that I'd just have to be patient and it'd be sorted by the end of the year.
This time next year I'll be running SMF 2 final integrated with TP v1.0.
In the meantime the existing software is great, and the fact that it's open source has meant that I've learnt heaps.
Cool. Great going, team.
When's it final, When's it final, When's it final, When's it final, When's it final LOL. SMF should have kept the project to themselves till later ;)
Well after some server difficulties I just tonight got this installed on a test board.
Great job guys.
The moderation feature is something I really need for my sites and I love the other new featurs this version is going to give us. Now just have wait for Bloc to catch up with TP for SMF 2.0 and I'll be in my glory.

they do have some nice themes :)
Check out their Theme Submissions sub-forum too. There's some modified versions in there for download as well as the official download section.
Hi, i have installed SMF 2.0 beta and everything has installed ok. One problem, however, when i attempt to upload TinyPortal v1.0.5 beta 1 i get the following error:
Could not upload package, please check directory permissions!
I have already changed the packages directory to 777 but still it will not upload?

TP will be avaible for smf 2.0???
and the TP team need mucho time for the modification??
thx
That will not happen for some time and no time frame will be set for that.
I also have a test forum set up which is SMF 1.1.4 and i get the exact same problem yet other mods can be apllied when attempted?
Please do not request support for Tinyportal on these boards. You must go to http://www.tinyportal.net for Tinyportal support.
Sorry but i thought the problem might actually be with package manager.
This is also not a support topic. Support questions should go in the support board.
Could probably be locked now and all support posts for 2.0 beta 3 public be directed towards the correct boards.
;)
Might as well.
Support for SMF 2.0 should be directed to SMF 2.x Support (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=147.0)
