Title: SMF is searching for translators!
Post by: Compuart on August 31, 2008, 03:06:06 PM
Thanks to a very active community, Simple Machines Forum is currently available in over 40 languages (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?smflanguages). Even though we're proud of that fact, we continue to search for ways to improve the quality of our international support and to make new languages available, so that more people can benefit from the SMF software.

In order to provide higher quality language files, we've created an online tool allowing multiple users to work on the same language at the same time. This will make life a lot easier for translators and speeds up the time it takes for a translation to be released as a language package.

The tool allows us to take a different approach when it comes to translating the software. We used to require that translators would spent a lot of time translating the full language package. Now that the tool is in use, we can invite anyone who's interested in helping out, so that more people can make the job of translating a language lighter.

So, we're looking for new (and current) translators. A requirement to join the team of translators would be to have good skills in both English and the language you're translating to and that you can spend a significant amount of time on translating.

If you're interested in helping out with one of the languages currently available or a language not yet available, send a mail to languages@simplemachines.org. Please add the language you wish to help with and in what way you wish to contribute.

Please note, that I'll be absent the next two weeks. I know that I wasn't much online lately, but real life was bugging me. I won't have internet access, so please wait until I return or email at the address Compuart wrote. Thanks. :-\
Luckily the languages@simplemachines.org address will be forwarded to all the people that are involved in getting the translation stuff going, including yours and mine, so there shouldn't be a problem in getting this thing started. :D

This is one of the major features of SMF itself-- the international community connection. It proves that even forum software can break the language barrier. :)

Good luck with the translations. :D

I want to translate from English (2.0 beta 3.1) to my native language Vietnamese but could not find the English language pack  (2.0 beta 3.1) in the download section. There is only English 1.1.5 lang pack there.
Is there any official documents showing how to extract the English language pack from the latest SMF 2.0 beta 3.1 setup package?
And how to use the marcovanveelen to generate buttons?
Thanks.

@target_locked,
I am not sure about the second question, but you can find the SMF english language files in the '/themes/default/languages/' folder. You will need to translate every file in the folder that follows the format '{filename}.english.php'.

There is already a translation for Vietnamese for SMF 1.1.5, so you may want to send an email to languages@simplemachines.org to get more information about translating. ;)

Hi target_locked.
Thanks for your translation offer. As LHVWB suggests the best way would probably be to e-mail the languages address. You can also find some more information in the stickies in Language Specific Support (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=12.0)

Any translation pack on our site could be considered "official". We do need some volunteers to help update our existing translations to the new version of SMF, and are always interested in adding new translations.

ROFL. I would really like to see a forum being translated into Klingon, but I don't think we should ever support such languages as 'official'. I like the suggestion though!

Is there a way to publish in English and have viewers click a button for automatic translation?

Let's say you have a board and someone from Germany finds or is sent to your forum and they need to have everything translated into German. Is there a way they can click an auto translate?
Thanks
Detective Krum

I really like your suggestion and we're looking into getting the 'percentage completed' dynamically back to the language download page (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?languages) (it had been there for a short while). However I do feel translations are never really done. We can always use more people looking at the languages to check if there's something that still needs quality improvement.

And not only that, we also need more translators in order to keep up with the new translatable material that's being added regularly. Next to the updates to the forum software itself, we are planning to add the Simple Machines site content and the documentation as translatable content too.

So, the more translators (regardless of the language) are active, the faster things get translated and the higher the quality of the translations will be.

hi
incase you need english-arabic translator let me know, thank you.
We need anyone knowing a non-english language and able to invest time in translating. Note that most of our language packages are not yet fully translated. There are of course a few people actively guarding any untranslated string to make sure it gets translated as soon as they get their hands on it, but since we have a lot of languages we need more of those people.

So if you're interested, follow the instructions of the first post, thanks :)

Hello,
I'm student of 2 year of English, my mother language is polish. I love SMF for simplicity in customizing it in the way i want it ;). Just try to compare SMF to phpbb2 (the most popular script in Poland), SMF >>> phpbb. That's the reason i want to report my willings to help you in making SMF for wider community, especially in Poland. To check my abilities just look at cs-grajkownia.pl and judge it :)

Greetings,

We can - if someone translates it for us. It's a pretty huge task, however. There are something like 4,000 language strings in 1.1, 5,000+ in 2.0.

Runic: Really? I've seen nothing outside of the fairly humdrum support requests.

And seriously, I thought you were involved with Phoenix? Instead of trying to stir up hassle here, why not just let the past be the past and move on? You're not going to do yourself any favours by keep trying to stir hassle up here.

Arantor: if you actually stopped deleting your account over there you would see whats happening on Phoenix.

MultiformeIngeno: who bought ipb license?
Title: Re: SMF is searching for translators!
Post by: Arantor on March 15, 2010, 08:47:38 AM
Runic: I deleted it because to be honest I have no intention of being involved over there. I hear it's just picked its name on... what... its 5th poll? And anyone started coding yet?

If Phoenix is so great, why are you over here causing trouble? We've all moved on here.

Owdy and JBlaze did, others were looking at it.

I'm not certain who are the current members of the Chinese team, but the Chinese translation team proposal topic is quite out of date.  There is a Chinese SMF site (http://www.smf.cn/) operated by fmben, and currently it's still working, but the sites and its domains are up for sales.  Seven weeks ago at there I submitted a near-complete Chinese translations for SMF 2.0 RC3 but have had no responses.  He still responses to my PM on the sale, though.

I think we are a bit lost.  Including me, at least three different persons has contributed major translations for the past year but the official pack is not in good shape.  I even wrote a tool to make sure *parameters* are not missing in my versions.  As far as I can tell our public sharing receive no public responses from the team.

The actual chinese translators are nathanael.lee (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=profile;u=246054) for chinese simplified and hsuzy (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=profile;u=25833) for chinese traditional.

So no answer lapunluyang?

to sheepy, to whom have you sent it?

CapriSkye and fmben are in the chinese translation team, but never used your language editor.

Hello,

I appreciate your efforts to break the language barriers and connect everyone internationally.  Did you start working on Amharic (or Geez) language? I am not good in the translation stuff. But I would love to see Amharic language incorporated in SMF.

Thanks!

No, we currently don't have any Star Trek language translations.

ahhhh,,,,okey.

I use another word....

In my case,I made a Japanese language file for four months. (SMF ver 2.0 RC4)
But you switch to wiki in RC5....This is why I need hard work again. Then,I have another problem....
At first,Your approval of member group account is necessary to translate wiki.....
Actually you did not gave me.(I email to Relyna. I have no experience of translation. That is why?)

=>(Any user on this site with 10+ posts can edit the wiki.)
You advise them.translate to japanese plz.

Do you understand Japanese? Normally Japanese dont understand English. It is same problem as you I think.....

P.S.
I start downgrade and translation to ver1.0.... :'( :'( :'(
I never touch ver2.0.(I afraid lost a time so many.)

AND no more post in this topic.

I've sent an email.

I am wondering, however, how many people outside the translator team are actually interested in obtaining a "Pirate Speak" language to put on their forum for Talk Like a Pirate Day, September 19th?  I am currently working on this, and hope to be finished with it within the next couple of weeks.  Even after translating phrases, I'm having to do tweaking to make sure everything is good for everywhere that string is used, and I'm being careful to make it as authentic as possible.  The automatic translators online are horrific, and just don't seem to do it proper justice.  I'm writing my own translation program, that will be designed to read in an SMF language file, and output a new language file with the proper translation.  It will make sure it doesn't start translating until after the assignment operator on a line ("="), and will also ignore HTML keywords within HTML tags, and will ignore URL addresses so that links are not broken.  This will make it possible to translate language files that come with mods that I haven't installed, so that people who write mods can make a pirate language easily available for their mod.

I don't believe anyone is interested in making 'official not-real language' packs available through the site, as there was at least one other language pack that was developed through that sort of method but not allowed on the main languages page.

I can't believe that this was dragged up from almost one year ago to ask for pirate talk  :o!  I obviously can't speak for the translation team here, but if I'd been asked if I wanted such a package in my old job, the answer would have been a definitive no.  I suspect that there's more than enough to do with real languages on SMF, without adding invented ones.

Sure there is, but if people want to do so, why not? Google does, by the way, have some support for such things.

Is there really sufficient demand for that sort of thing?  If there is I must be out of the loop.

The reason why not would simply be additional work load, and, from my point of view tedious (working with pirate language that is), but if someone really wanted to do it, I'm not going to stop them.

That's the point, demand != supply. If someone wants to go ahead and do it, that's up to them. They believe there is demand, and just because it isn't widespread demand doesn't mean there isn't demand for it.

People do things for the craziest reasons, including Google.

I'm not disagreeing with you, all I'm saying is that it seems, to me, like a pretty pointless exercise to go to such lengths for a made up language, but, as your rightly say, people do the craziest things sometimes.

Not every site is about economics or real things there are dozens of roleplaying sites out there and that's not good to say "craziest". Demand creates Supply in the end.

Me neither because as I said before it started as a fun project none of us expected to work day and night.

You're talking to someone who plays Warhammer, so I would include myself in the my definition of crazy ;).  In addition, I generally use the internet to escape from things like economics, so again, it's not a substantive disagreement, rather it's just a case of personal preference.

True.  Folks on a forum that I administrate (as a hobby for fun) have been "heavily requesting" (they know better than to demand) a pirate language option.  We always participate on the board and encourage everyone to post like a pirate for that day, and I've seen no one posting any other way on that day.  I'm doing it for that forum, no one else.  If someone else is interested in obtaining it in time for September 2013, then I'd be willing to share.  That's the only reason I stopped by.  Sure, probably no one else has the time that also has the skill, but hey, I'm retired.  I'll make a bit of time somewhere over the next few months.  I'll also have a special pirate theme for the forum designed for the event, that will automatically change for the day, as I already have made the coding changes necessary to "switch themes and site logos" for special occasions, such as Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, etc.  I have special themes for all those, and plan on completing one for the Talk Like a Pirate Day as well.  Why not?

Isn't that Pirate Day Talk thing just for.. like.. 12 year olds?

Well, shiver me timbers! I be nay 12 year old. I be a retired programmer o' them computer type contraptions! Avast! Speakin' like a pirate be as good fer me spirit as kidnappin' a pretty princess, me hearties! Arr!  Ye must be one o' them 12 year old scurvy dogs t' even think such a thing, land lubber!

I personally think it's a fantastic idea ;)

Part of the problem is that SMF's language strings do not exactly lend themselves to this. (I have sort of partially attempted this locally, and gave up for the time being, until I finish restructuring the language files at least...)

We decided to refuse your application based on your English. Of course your English doesn't have to be perfect, but a solid knowledge of the English language is a must. The reason for this is that when translating to any language, you will have to deal with English phrases.

Of course you can always try again later. We're always looking forward to bring new translators aboard! :)

I can help in Brazilian Portuguese translation and review, for the forum itself. The existing version is good, but it sounds like Portugal Portuguese in many parts, not Brazilian. I assume(or at least it looks like that) it was probably a Portugal person that did it, and he managed something quite good, but you can't really ever make a natural translation for the opposite language if you're not familiar with it, there are too many differences. I'm sure I'd do a terrible Portugal Portuguese, for one :P I can help translate new text as well.

Title: Re: SMF is searching for translators!

You should translate the $txt string variables that the MOD adds. The easiest way is then to post the translated strings in the MOD's support topic so that the author adds it in next version (if he wants to) or any interested user can pick and use them.

hi,
Now is safe to translate version 2.1 into Vietnamese?

Yes, but there maybe some string changes in future, so you may need to correct/update some strings you already translated.

2.1 is still in beta...   so, in short -- not really.

Translation software (aka Language Editor), allows us to mark strings outdated so answer is yes.

Additionally, we rarely accept translators who have not established themselves. I note that you have only this one post...   please, read through the community. Post questions and/or replies to people so that we can establish that you are a person who has some interest in the software/community and help establish your language credentials....

Please do be patient, someone will get back to you asap.

We appreciate your offer to help translate and your continued patience whilst waiting for a reply.

It has been eight months now...

Sorry about that... You can try to contact Dzonny via PM. He's a very nice person and he'll help you. When I contacted him, he told me that they've got over 500 messages in their inbox so my application might got lost.

Regards :)

10 months? That does seem excessive to me.

It's GERMAN language in 2V1 beta. I have a screenshot, but in this thread attachments are not allowed. I'll try to send it by mail.

Grüße vom Rhein, der kub

EDIT: mail ist raus, leider auch kein attachment möglich .....

If you're interested in translating SMF, the best thing you could both do would be to apply to join the German translation team.  I'm guessing that you may have already done so though, in which case please be patient for a reply :).

meanwhile I involved my moderators and we found more and more things ..... even in functionallity.

Where to post to help make 2V1 nearly perfect German  ;D ;D (with screenshots) ??

Schnellantwort und Zitat enden immer in "Schnellantwort" ohne Formatierungsleiste.

see attached picture (sh...t, no attachments allowed. Makes it much more complicate to explain!)

Hello!

Please, if you want to help, follow instructions of first message:

Regards :)

Interesting. I had never heard of it before so I looked it up. While it's spoken mainly in Nigeria, it is approaching 30 million speakers. :)

Amazing that you would have to post the exact same thing after two consecutive posts. (http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/ii614/OPStuph/newboard/smilies/ourplace/shakehead1.gif)
