Title: SMF 1.1.7 Released
Post by: Compuart on November 07, 2008, 04:28:59 PM
Simple Machines announces the release of SMF 1.1.7

This release is a security-only update which addresses a few recently discovered security issues in SMF 1.1.6 and older. As the result of these security issues, we highly recommend that all users upgrade to 1.1.7 as soon as possible. Users can upgrade by using either the fast install option from the administration center, or manually applying the changes attached to this message.

For those users running SMF 1.0.x series, we have also released SMF 1.0.15 addressing the above issues. These security issues do not affect SMF 2.0.

To upgrade, use the package manager to upgrade to 1.0.15/1.1.7. Simply visit your administration center, where a notice will be displayed, prompting you to upgrade.  Then follow the simple instructions through the package installation!

If you receive any tests failed, you may need to upgrade manually or with an upgrade/update package. To do this, please read our documentation on the Online Manual for instructions on Upgrading SMF.

Lastly, please do not use this topic for any support requests. You will get a much more prompt response to your question, by visiting the relevant support board!

Regards,

Simple Machines

Thanks in advance for your effort.

There is a 'zeroday exploit' out for SMF 1.16and below.

It is not a 'driveby' exploit and requires an authenticated user, but that takes a few minutes (unless you have moderated/approved signups)

You MUST upgrade

That does not address the issue of mods - I have *dozens* and TinyPortal.

I have some heavily modded sites as well, including various versions of TP and there were no immediate conflicts.

You will probly lose some uninstall links but those aren't too hard to put back on later.

Thanks for the yery good job. Good Work.

Just a very unimportant thing:
The file Sources/Help.php has Version "1.1" in line 8 instead of 1.1.7, so the detailed verification of the version number fails (is red), if you use "/index.php?action=detailedversion"

Can I simply overwrite the changed files via FTP? Also, why is the Packages folder empty? Does it need to be uploaded also?

Cheers,

I have a modded 1.1.6, and every time I try uploading the update (I've tried both large upgrade and small update), I get a "The package you tried to upload either is not a valid package or has become corrupted." message.

Also, when I click the upgrade link that is giving in my admin control panel, I get an error page saying:

"Forbidden

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

The issues you are having are support issues, not an issue with the package. The package was installed and tested by many people before it was released and lots have already installed it.
Please use our support boards, Additionally if you searched, you may of come across the answer to your issue.

It is fine to discuss the patch. It is perfectly fine to ask about the patch. If you are having trouble installing, you need to use the support boards. Having multiple people posting support questions in a single topic is chaotic and no help to anyone.

Additionally, I would like to thank all our testers for being so quick to get testing done, and also to our developers, one of whom stayed up all night to get this out.

Updated on all my SMF forums went without a hitch.  Thank you for all your effort.

I'd also like to point out the speed at which the whole team was able to address these security concerns after they were made public.  Which I must say was released without prior knowledge to the SMF team to the public first.  Then test, configure and release a patch to the SMF community as fast as humanly possible.

Like under 3 days from first knowledge to patch, which for a purely volunteer program I'm sure commercial entities would have issues in that time frame for reaction.

My thanks to the Devs and the rest of the SMF Team for their dedication to resolve these issues as quickly as they did.

I'd like to thank everyone who reported the security issue via email.  I apologize that I don't have time to respond to each of those emails.

I'd also like to ask all of our users, if you find a security issue, please notify us first.  In many cases we would be able to repair that problem before it is listed on multiple sites.

If you use the patch, it should install around anything you have. If there is a problem, you will be told beforehand (the patch uses the package manager).

I had 1.1.6, i've replaced all files contained in the update package 1.1.7, i did this step many time, but I alway get a message (on upgrade.php page) that says that there still are old files that need to be replaced.
I've upgraded also the language files.
Nothing, always the same message. In the end I've deletede upgrade.php and now everything seems to be ok.
Can I check it in some way?

He's right - it's a problem with your package. You provide different file versions in the update (smf_1-1-7_update.tar.bz2) and upgrade (smf_1-1-7_upgrade.zip) files.

p.ex.: Sources/Register.php (both versioned 1.1.6!) line 301 or the upgrade.php itself: in update it's still 1.1.6 and in upgrade it's 1.1.7 but with ugly dos line breaks?!

So please
1) fix it
2) provide an "update package" without all that smiley, avatar crap - you changed what - 10 files and we should download more than 1MB?
3) don't provide different update package versions with the same name (again)

There was actually a problem with the upgrade package with the upgrade.php, compuart has regenerated the package which will sync within the next 24 hours or so to the download mirror.

if there's another problem we don't know about with the packages, please post details in Bug Reports (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=137.0).  Thanks :)

you know, THIS original "news item" should have been in the SUPPORT BOARDS!

I mean, there may be a post in the news area, but it should automatically link to support, so that peoples responses will be about the issues /problems they have with the update,

I mean, who needs 300 ":D I did it! ",
"It worked for me,thanks! "
posts??

Even if this were in the support boards, 300 need help posts in a single topic don't help either, regardless of where it happens.  It makes figuring out who's problems are resolved and who's are not a near impossibility.

we provide a dedicated Install and Upgrade Help (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=10.0) Board for this specific reason.

This topic is naught but the announcement of the release for the community here.

To upgrade, use the package manager to upgrade to 1.0.15/1.1.7. Simply visit your administration center, where a notice will be displayed, prompting you to upgrade.

My admin center is not giving me the normal upgrade link/warning it use to show. How do I install this update?

you can download the mod package from the first post of this topic, and upload it to /Packages, and install it that way

/me asks that all further support questions please get posted to Install and Upgrade Help (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=10.0)

Thank you for the speedy update, always nice to see.

palofdru, weightman*, and others,

Is it so hard to understand they want people to goto the support boards, because they want each issue to be in its own topic, so they know its resolved. Who wants to ask a question on page for and maybe have to wait until page six to see the answer, when they could first search, see if its been answered and if not start a new topic and get an answer.

Makes it easier on the support staff, and on the user.

From what I understand these topics are left open for people to ask about the specific release and to say thanks or say, what ever.

From the first post

"Lastly, please do not use this topic for any support requests. You will get a much more prompt response to your question, by visiting the relevant support board!"

Let me add maybe the team should link directly to the Install/Upgrade board, and or the 1.x Support board.

*Sorry your who he quoted so it stood to reason, and I see your point, but this release isn't the best example of a release where people would ask whats been added or ask about a feature or other things that might not be "support."

Quotepalofdru, weightman, and others,

Hey now, I didn't ask any questions in this thread. Still, I agree with palofdru though its not big deal to me. The ability for people to post a thank you is pretty trivial. And if they really want to they could do it in the chit-chat forum. But, this thread has a ton of them, plus a few support questions you don't want here, and then a bunch of "don't post support questions here." All seems pointless to me- just put the link to where you want support questions and then lock the thread.

As for me, thanks again for the upgrade. It worked smoothly!

Hey, there are only you two discussing about an irrevalant thing. It is said that talk about other stuffs in other section. This is an anouncement topic, and even it doesn't have to be locked, because we love to talk about it, and congratulate the team. If you try some paid scripts and it doesn't have to be a forum software, you realize that the customer support teams are very ineffective, and ignore you although those scripts are paid while here the script is free, and support is excellent. This is a great script to use, and the support team work perfectly though all are volunters. Hence, please just appreciate them, and do not mess this topic with irrelevant talks. Thank you smf. I really love this script because I haven't seen such script clever, smooth and safe like smf. I have used many scripts, and infact I have paid thousands to make them better, and efficient while here nothing, and I was able to modify the smf script myself with learning from others. I love smf, and I wish smf can be the best forum software in the world. There is only one problem that I dislike. Instead of seeing smf friends badges, I would like to see support, or other badges more. However, people became very busy to support smf these days. There were very great names supporting smf live. However, they are now just friends. I missed them, and would like to call them to work so that we can make this software the best.

Well, in that case, the link could go to a CREATE NEW TOPIC LINK, with the subject or something ALREADY FILLED OUT.

As for for other changes that were made and seeing what they were, you can simply download the patch file in the first post and open the .mod file, relating to your SMF version, in a text/XML editor and see what they were.

If you look in the .htaccess file you can see the commands they have been included and see what they do and what they will prevent people being able to do at that folder level.

Test Failed error/s don't necessarily mean they aren't fully compatible with 1.1.7, just that the code required to be found for the automated process has been altered from the original design.  Either via patch or mod installation.

I've updated, but it seems that every mod I go to install leads to an error even though the mod was compatible for 1.1.7

I'm not sure if it's a bug within 1.1.7, but I'm just asking in case if there is.

There is some bug in 1.1.7. 5 minutes after installing "security update" I got spamer. in 12 hourse after that I got 6 spamers more.   What is possible to do?  Can I downgrade to 1.1.6? Is it possible?

Thanks

Andres

Hi, firstable say thanks for the upgrade, works fine.

Second....i have installed TP, but after upgrade....TP has dissapeared

The question is.....i have to edit the same (new 1.1.7 files) files or is it possible to upload the files (old 1.1.6 files) y had edited time before to have TP installed?

Thanks.

I'm on 1.1.5.  I was unable to sucessfully "installatron" 1.1.6 so I reverted back to 1.1.5 a month ago or so.

Can I jump from 1.1.5 to 1.1.7?

My forum was attacked last night even though it is closed so I know I need to get this upgrade!

I and a few others have the same thing just happen earlier this morning. I myself was using 1.1.6 when it happened, so downgrading would not help.

I am new to all board software and SMF is my first. So far I have updated from 1.1.5 to 1.1.6 to 1.1.7 without any problems. That in and of itself is testimony to the quality of  the patches released by the SMF team.
Thanks!

I think the spam is due to increased publicity of SMF with the issues in 1.1.6. From what I understand, it was being plastered on lots of hacker and warez boards, which are just the places that people running spambots would want to hang out.

Turn on image verification, set to highest if convenient. Don't allow guests to post.

If you don't mind modifications, there are several good ones in the modification site.

Hi,
I've upgraded just fine, but for some reason my "Forum" menu button doesn't pertrude when I click on it.  My forum appears, but the animation doesn't happen...you know, where it looks like you pressed the button and it stays down until you click another button?

Should I uninstall and reinstall the TinyPortal?  Not sure if its this download that created that "Forum" menu button.

I don't really want to start creating forum categories until I know that room will function right.

Thank you very much.  Tiffy.

reCAPTCHA for SMF (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1044)
Are You Human? (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=999)

Both should install with no issues under 1.1.7. In fact, most any mod that works with 1.1.2 or newer should work with 1.1.7.

Tiff, post in the support boards.

My board was hit by it too, and my board is not a warez or hacker website.

Yes, you need to patch it to 1.1.6 first, then it will let you go to 1.1.7.

It must be, since it's the most current secure 1.1.x SMF software out so far. :P

SMF 1.1.7 is certainly more secure than 1.1.6!

Either way, I think it's a great testimony to our security-oriented focus that we got these patches developed and out within 48 hours of first being notified of the issues.

Also, thank you to all our supporters, especially those that alert us when they see potential issues.

That doesn't make it secure. It just means that it is the newest version of 1.1.x and no bugs have been found it in yet.

Hmmm, I downloaded the patch link and the 1.7 fix but only got a message that either the files weren't the correct version or the files were corrupted.

I get this a lot when I'm using the package manager to upload.  It's really a fun thing when it works.

If someone could log in as a user to my site, I promise to make you a moderator so you can take a look see what I mean.  I've constantly had stuff go wrong every time I've installed and this is the 3rd installation.  You'd think after being off work for 5 vacation days and having to reinstall 3 different times, I'd at least get one of the installs right!  Not yet!

Please don't think I'm complaining.  I'm just tired of failing and I REALLY, REALLY, WANT this to work!

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.  It's late; I'm going to bed and unfortunately, have to start back to work tomorrow.  Bye now,  Tiff.

Tiff, i'd strongly reccommend starting a topic in Install and Upgrade Help (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=10.0).  That will allow your issue to have its own venue for our support team to look at, instead of trying play post tag in this release topic where other discussion is going on.

Thanks :)

Thanks for the "piece-of-p**s" update, SMF. I got an influx of spammer users registering on my site over the past 24 hours. All of a sudden, after the update, they can't do jack.

Keep up the immense work, SMF.
