Title: Simple Machines adds team dedicated to internationalization
Post by: Compuart on May 24, 2009, 03:07:25 PM
From the start, Simple Machines Forum has been made by many people around the globe and has been translated and supported in many languages. The software has always been developed with localization in mind.  Our translators provide a large number of translations in a relatively short time frame and the number of translations is still growing.

To stress the importance of internationalization, Simple Machines has created the Internationalization Team. They will supervise translations, develop new concepts and ideas for better internationalized software & support and facilitate other teams to be more localization-aware.

So, what can you expect in the future?

It looks very good, always thought it would be very nice if (for example) the Docs (http://docs.simplemachines.org/) section was translated into as many languages as possible.

Many times, when someone asks support, is sent to these Docs, and then the people say he doesn't know nothing English.

--

Another aspect, would be good if the translation of MODs have a system similar to the translations of Forum.

Or maybe a more "primitive", for example, could be "post type", but with xml downloadable.

In this case, the MOD only will be include the English translation, but the user also could download the translation if it is already available.

M-DVD: Some of your suggestions are already concidered ;)

However it is more imortant right now that SMF is fully translated into those languages already available.

I only use one language (English), but I think that it is great that SMF is internationalizing the software!

I've started using Launchpad for translating my mod. It's a great site.

Like it's already said before here, these translations are planified, we only wait that the system is ok to can do it.

So just wait patiently and it will be done. ;)

Happy to see finally this team. I hope we'll do a good job to satisfy a maximum of people.

There some problem with Hebrew, the translation are OK, but there is no RTL support for Babylon template (default).
You should add transformed to Hebrew default templates.

Cause only translation is not enough for Hebrew and Arabic.

I've problems with the UTF-8 version... if I try to download it from the admin dedicated area SMF says there aren't files to download.
Instead the non-utf8 package works properly...

I not sure that the Vietnamese is available. But if not I hope that we can open one team and one box for Vietnamese!

SMF is not so popularity like VBB or phpBB in Vietnam, but I think SMF is more convenient than VBB and phpBB, I hope that in the future SMF will become the most popularity in my country!

There is a vietnamese language pack available. However it is not fully translated. We have a few vietnamese translators, but we can always use more ;)

No, there's no badge attached to translators.

Internationalisers are team members who oversee the language translations and other language related issues. Translators arent team members, which wont net them a badge. Many translators, but not all, are local moderators for their language.

Besides translation which is the most obvious, perhaps some more efforts could be made to handle UTF-8 characters without strlen-problem.

You don't need any badge to help SMF. I think SMF doen't need people with Status but people that works.

i'm not agreed with you ... i'm accepting about no-badge QQs but We are in the SMF Team ... We're Helping the Community about Translating, you can say "All can make this" but we were choosed for that :)

one more question how can i became a "Internationalizer" ?
i must be php-master or mod-creator or both of :P

We are in the SMF Team

Wrong. The team is defined by the badges. If you have a coloured badge with the SMF logo in it, then you are part of the team. Just because you translate SMF into X, Y and Z language, report Q number of bugs or donate G amount of money doesn't put you on the team, but rather, ASSISTING the team.

Getting on the team is harder than that, I went through it (but I stepped down of my own choice), you have to put a lot of hard work into supporting fellow users, design stuff, code stuff, or in the case of the new internationalisation team, I'd say it'd be translating, but also assisting people with their own translations too, and also supporting people within the language boards.

Just wondering...
I saw that this forum (simplemachines.org) have a working RTL templates when choosing RTL languages (such as Hebrew).
However, it does not exist on the publicity available RC1.
Is there a way to download the current theme "snapshot", or I must wait for RC2 whenever that'll be ?
Title: Re: Simple Machines adds team dedicated to internationalization
Post by: Gary on June 02, 2009, 03:20:17 AM
For the RTL language packs on SM.org, many are from previous releases of 2.0 so there are actually language strings missing or are in English. (most likely the latter)

As for the current snapshot, there isn't one. So the only option is to wait until RC2.

We don't require you to be professional in any way. But we hope for some kind of level. As we don't speak the languages, we really can't check the level of the translators work.
For each language there is a team of translators. They are expected to communicate together not to spoil each others work.
