Hello all,
We are pleased to announce the immediate release of SMF 2.0 RC3 to the public. This version marks the third release candidate for 2.0, including about 350 new entries in the change log, consisting mostly of bug fixes, interface tweaks and fine-tuning of the new Curve theme.
We strongly recommend all users of earlier development releases to upgrade to this release, for it contains several security fixes.
While we are confident that there are no major problems with this release, we want to remind you that it is still not to be considered stable software. We do not recommend its use in live environments and if you are not comfortable with using this release candidate, we advise you to wait until the release of the final version before using the 2.0 line.
Highlights of this release include:
- Several security-related fixes.
- Better compatibility with RTL languages.
- Added curvy headers to loads of tables throughout SMF for the best Curve experience.
- Fine-tuned conversation view in the personal messages section.
- Improved read tracking of topics; e.g. topics are now marked as read by pages, to allow easier resuming of reading.
- Several tweaks to the WYSIWYG editor; now automatically disabled on mobile devices.
- Post screens (new topic, etc) are center aligned again.
- Buttons are now aligned much more consistently throughout SMF.
- Row color alternation to most of the tables in the administrative areas.
- Redesigned profile statistics centre.
- Fixed install and upgrade script for PostgreSQL.
- Updated help section.
- Revamped SSI examples page.
- Rephrasing of several error messages.
- Improvements to the package manager's archive extraction algorithm.
- Toggling of full size versions of resized images.
- Altered styling for quotes and code blocks.
Those interested in the detailed changelog may like to download it from our download page.
Finally - please do not use this topic for any support requests. You will get a much more prompt response by visiting the relevant support board!
Regards,
Simple Machines

Hey, it's time to get positive bro.
Brack1: vbgamer is saying he'll have to update his mods FOR RC3, which is a good thing.
I'm strongly contemplating it too.
Congrats guys. The moments we have all been waiting for.
I am at about 35 of mine done, tested and updated for RC3 just waiting on the modsite to accept RC3 now
Nice, that wasn't too long of a wait 8)
By the way, any update equivalent coming for US on the 1.1.xx side of the fence ?
Uh... no, since 1.1.x is in maintenance release while 2.0 is in active development?

Ever since, 1.1.0, all 1.1 releases have been for security and bug fixes only. No new features have been added since. If there is a major security vulnerability or bug that pops up, there could end up being a 1.1.12. But, it won't add functionality.
That's the reason most mods that were released for 1.1-1.1.5 still work, and even more work with just a few edits, for 1.1.6-1.1.11.
Thanks for all
About time. :D I was wondering when you'd get the packages compiled. ;) Nice work.
Great Job!
Thanks Developers!

WOOOHOOO!!! Great job and thank you for all your hard work SMF Team

Its going to be a "fun" weekend updating several SMF installations :D

Depends on the mod, really. If they don't work right now, they may in a few days when the mod authors get a chance to update them. *Most* RC2 mods *should* work without a lot of work.
Mostly, yes. Of the ones I've updated so far only one actually needed anything more than minor changes to it - the rest just needed adding 2.0 RC3 to the list of supported versions.
Great work! Time for updating themes me guess. ;D (and mod)
Alright! Will check it out now.

I've been away on vacation. The fight is over? Has any resolution been announced? I guess congratulations are in order but for me personally upgrading to RC3 is out of the question since every time I decide to upgrade from one RC to another something gets screwed up. In other words, I am waiting for the full version to come out.
unless there's some currently undiscovered monster hiding in my SMF closet, RC3 feels very polished and finished over RC2. lots of problems i was experiencing have evaporated with the upgrade. this feels production quality to me. nice improvement, people.

Not suggesting anything of the sort, but seeing as it didn't work from RC1.2 to RC2, why would it work from RC1.2 to RC3? =]

Just waiting all my mods are updated will install new/update. And I have seen a lot of new mods being here or are in development. SMF is really *not* dead, living better then ever! Just sneaking to simple desk as addon, sounds like nice features. And dream portal, just looking what it can better then simpleportal.

If you want to run multiple installs from a single database, you have been able to do so for a long time, just change the table prefix. If you're thinking about sharing of some data, it's not going to be in 2.0 as it's feature locked.
What Thread do we use for support on the upgrade using the webinstall.php file. I'm having trouble upgrading

Actually I think you *were* able to use the small update package from RC1.2 to RC2. And you *are* able to use now, the small update package currently for download, to update from RC2 to RC3.
You use it however, the same way as a large upgrade package: by replacing your files with the files in the package, and running the upgrade script. Simply there should be less files (only those who were modified compared to the former version, in theory).
None of them is the same with a patch to apply through package manager, if that is what you were referring to. Such patch does not exist for RC versions, and you can't update through package manager.
Hi,
I'm all but an expert so here are a few questions:
1. What is the procedure to upgrade from 1.1.11 to 2 rc3?
2. I use the simple portal 2.3.1 Is it working on RC3?
My site: mtb.slo-istra.net
EDIT: Maybe I was supposed to write this under 2.x support?!
@tomicko: please, as said in the first post, use the specialized support boards for these issues. It would allow your topic to be treated separately and dealt with appropriately. :)
I'm so glad!
Hopefully, I'll upgrade after around a month when the mods I use are flawlessly compatible with RC3!
And we're going to a full stable release after this, right?
C4G-TK: There was an outcome? I missed that then. Oh wait... it's still on-going.
rjckE: Not until the mods are updated unless you're willing to do the work yourself. Note that the upgrade will remove your mods as they are now.

Most likely. It may depend on the issues found in RC3, but I hope it won't be the case of another RC. :)

You are not rude. :)
The thing is that SMF developer team uses a model of "release when ready" for their releases, meaning that there cannot really be promises made about timing. When they will consider the software is stable enough indeed for a Gold release, the final 2.0. package will be released.
That said, RC3 is quite stable for all I've seen for the time being, I hope we're getting there. :)

Haven't checked quick edit, but quick reply definitely still has the session check in it (indeed it would be more work to actually remove it), given that it calls Post.php/Post2() which does a session check on the back of the form response from the main reply template too.

Well, it depends on your definition of obsolete. Sould would say SMF is obsolete since it isn't pursuing the MySpace/FaceBook push to be "social" (ignoring that making posts is a social activity, just a different kind than the "updates" they are thinking of).
I'd rather say that SMF the software will make progress as long as there are developers working on it.
There were and still are problems, and they are nothing to take lightly, but that doesn't mean SMF is necessarily "dead" or "dying".
Currently, as you can see, RC3 is out, and the developers are working to make sure that the remaining bugs are found and squashed, so that 2.0 final version can be out the door.
Thanks. :)

SMF in its current incarnation will probably die after the release of 2.0 final (because its current dev team will not stay forever), but it doesn't mean it'll be immediately obsolete...
Heck, it's still the best free forum software around. Just not by a large margin, unlike a couple of years ago.

He never said anything was wrong with the dev team at all, but they do have real life things going on too, and might need to move on eventually. That's the way I understand Nao's post...

yeah plus i see no reason why they can just release a small update for rc2 users :\
Actually, most big mods that have active mod authors are updated very quickly.
I plan to have all of my mods updated by Thursday.
Most major mods are updated very shortly after release of a new version.

No, that is not the case. In fact, no session checks have been removed for POST requests as, indeed, that would form a security risk. ;)
The session check has been removed for a few GET requests though, for example on the requests for the quick quote buttons and the 'add poll' button. The reason behind this is that those requests don't manipulate data -- therefore they do not need the check The forms they link to will require a check on submit, though! :)
I don't see what's to rush here. SMF 1.1 is very usable and functional. Why not give time for SMF 2.0 to develop properly. Specifically when there's no rush for it. For community, mod developer and designers' feedback it is important to have betas and release candidates. That to find bugs, get suggestions for better features, etc.

He never said anything was wrong with the dev team at all, but they do have real life things going on too, and might need to move on eventually. That's the way I understand Nao's post...
And that's what I meant.
I take it the RC4 is in the works as moving forward or is taking a break?
More than likely SMF 2.0 final is next just a few remaining bugs.

I had heard from a number of notable voices that an RC4 was very likely.

Interesting. I actually left that in when adding the same function into SimpleDesk, since while I entirely see where you're coming from, Aaron, I don't think it hurts to have that be checked, but I agree it's not a *risk* to remove. I'd just rather be paranoid than lax :)

The decision belongs to the Lead Developer, afaik.
That said, the team is informed about the status and for all we know, it is most likely Gold will be next, once the remaining bugs are fixed (and there are no more new ones found, I suppose :) ).

It being there was actually reported to us, as it increases the chances of a malicious script finding the session id. I believe that's the main reason for it being removed. :)
thank you for the nice work
Sssssswweeeeeeeeettttt!!!!
Thanks. New icons will be better. Currently smf has ancient icons.
Awesome :) Actually looking forward to updating my site.
Mods was vanished, and needed to be re-installed manually.
Other than that, the improvements are good so far.
Thank You SMF

I'm sure the upgrade guide does actually say that is totally expected behaviour. No release prior to final can be upgraded without losing mods.
Great Job Guys!
Keep up the good work ;D
Nice Can't wait for SMF Gold :) I can't upgrade my site since it was heavily modified and I dont want to do the work again when the final version is out :)
Thanks

I've gleaned the thread and these old eyes may have just missed it, but is there a link for manual upgrading? I don't see it listed on with the others on the Upgrades page.

If by manual upgrading, you mean a list of all the changes... no, and there never has been. Generally with RC changes it's just quickest to replace all the files with the Large Upgrade package.
If you're going from 1.1.x to 2.0 you have to do that anyway since virtually every mod and every theme will require reworking.

If you are masochistic and really want to try and remember to make all the edits yourself, download the install packages for RC2 and RC3. Extract them into parallel directories. Once done, run Meld, WinMerge, or plain diff against the directories to get a list of all the changes.

I'm not even masochistic enough to do that. Though the idea of writing something to auto package it could be interesting if I were less busy and more bored.
Thanks, Arantor and Motoko-chan. :)
No, I simply wasn't thinking; I get a bit dull this time of evening. I've manually upgraded throughout the 1.x series but I do remember, now, when 2.x was first introduced, I did a clean install on my test board.
I'll just go at it the sane man's way. ;)
Thank you for the update. Here's to another step towards gold! :)

Long life SMF!! ^_^
Congrats team SMF!
Owdy: You know as well as anyone that it's when it's done. Can't you just be happy for them to have gotten this far, since it's a sign of moving forwards?
Stop creating drama and being so all sarcastic over the stuff. Sure, you're not some fancy rank anymore and your whole group of people don't like the people who lead SMF, but seriously, who gives a ******.
Vbgamer is pretty fast in updating his mods to RC3
Thanks guy
same to Labradoodle-360
AND Arantor..
weldone guys
They are on top of things!
Also, many of the mods install just fine by emulating RC2.
Thanks again to all involved.

Did they need any updating in the first place...?
Apart from the title_bar and cat_bar change, I don't see what else needs being checked...
To mod authors: just make sure the 2.0 install script uses range "2.0-2.99.99", so that any future version will be accepted without changes.

I actually recommend using "2.0, 2.0.* to cover updates. Any SMF 2.1 will likely be incompatible with 2.0 mods. Likewise, I'm going to hold off on wildcarding until 2.0 is declared stable.

I'd prefer something like
<install for="2.0 RC1.2, 2.0 RC2, 2.0 RC3">
[...] // installation xmls
and
<install for="2.0 - 2.99.99">
<readme type="inline" parsebbc="true">This mod has not been tested on your version of SMF.
It might work, or not. If you have errors, do not continue unless you know for sure what you are doing.</readme>
[...] // installation xmls
It would install just the same on present and future versions (or try to), but it would also tell the users that you didn't test it yet. (when you do, you could adjust what's included in the first one, and only the 2.0 versions not included in the first one would get the warning)

Nao, you media installed without updates.
weldone
Nao: 2.0 - 2.99.99 isn't quite the same thing. You're implying it will work on any 2.x, not just 2.0.x, which will cause issues when 2.1 occurs.
There is much frustration in the air still, but even with that, why lash out? There's no need for it, especially as he's moved on by his own admission. Either let it go, or get involved in fixing it, don't just whine about it.

Your range would also cover 2.1, which would likely be incompatible with mods unless it was the smallest of edits. There is/was also a weird bug where ranges like 1.0.9-1.0.99 break. I just usually prefer the asterisk because of that.

Exactly. Devolving into a person who makes random snips is just unproductive, bad for one's health, and a waste of time.
I see what you mean... And I didn't see a problem in that in order to install 2.1, one would have to reinstall all mods anyway (it's not a patch upgrade, it's a major upgrade that requires overwriting files.) In which case, if reinstalling the mod over it doesn't work, yes, it needs updating -- but in the unlikely case that it does work, it saves me the need to update the file at all ;)
Okay,
My server crashed and after many years of a given message board I'm looking at a change. SM seems interesting but two problems:
First - This place's comments seem to indicate it may not be a stable organization! Why should anyone add the SM message board when the site's own boards show so much in-fighting and animosity??
Second - If I were to decide to go with SM, how difficult will the migration from 1.x to 2.x be? Is it worth messing with right now?
Lazarus_Long: Well... there has been fighting, but in any sizeable organisation that's been around years, you'll get that. It just means that all concerned want what's best and have different ideas on how that should be achieved.
The migration from 1.x to 2.x is straightforward enough provided that you can find suitable mod and theme replacements that suit - not all 1.x mods work on 2.x and similar for themes. Additionally most themes that predate 2.0 RC2 will need major work to update.
Personally I think 2.0 RC3 is stable enough for most forums now.
Same here. I uploaded all of the files from RC3 (overwriting what was there), ran upgrade.php, reinstalled mods (having to emulate RC2 for some, and manual edits for a few). Done. Quite smooth and headache free.

I can only guess, but I would assume that it was brought into the open because it was already there anyway. I agree with Arantor. Any large organization with passionate people at the helm will have to endure some contention.
On the bright side, it would seem the worst is over. RC3 was released this week. Many of the mod authors have jumped back into action. I had my forums using RC3 and all the mods I use were updated in less than 24 hours. Heck even a couple mods that had been archived were brought up to date. (Ones I had been silently waiting for)

If I were going to migrate from another forum to SMF, I'd go straight for 2.0.
