BeforeYour Forum -> Your Topic (Link tree)
AfterYour Forum -> <h1>Your Topic</h1> (Link tree)
Changelog V1.0.1Removed default h1 tag in forum title

I like this simple mod, it would be good for SEO.
Si, esa es precisamente la finalidad del mod,
Very simple and very effective
Great mod ;)
But be careful that when we have the linktree at the top and at the bottom at the same time, we cannot have two H1 together on the page.
We must have only one H1....I suggest for the top linktree only and eventually, H2 for the bottom linktree.
Just install this mod, SMF 1.1.11 version. But I dont see any diference before and after the mod instalation? Is there some visible diference in titlle look?
This mod is pretty nice! It will make a difference in SEO, if used right.

On SMF 1.1.11 this is a problem, since there are 2 breadcrumbs instead of one, making each page have a repeated h1 tag - considered bad for SEO (I think in SMF 2.0 there's only one breadcrumb so everything ok in this version).
Can anyone explain to me how this can help SEO?

lucas-ruroken,
Since majority of the users are on 1.1.11, do you have a fix for this? I tried to do this myself, but it's more complicated than I thought.

I'm with 2.0RC3 and I have two breadcrumbs...one at top, one at bottom.
Just look at this topic itself, there's two...
There's no evidence that two H1 tag is bad, but it's probably best to use just one. I implemented this mod two days ago and I already seeing ranking improvements for google search. This is a great mod.

This mod not makes changes in sight...
Ok, so we just install the mod and pray/hope it works.
Arent there a way to see it at work ?
I think you gotta look at tge post template to see if it works.

Ok, maybe they've updated it in recent beta or RC versions of SMF 2.0, because in earlier versions there was just one.
Anyway, in SMF 2.0 the H1 tag is always the same - the header logo - so it is never duplicated:
<h1 class="forumtitle">
<a href="http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php"><img src="http://www.simplemachines.org/community/Themes/smsite2/images/site/smsite_logo.jpg?rc2.1.1" alt="Simple Machines Community Forum" /></a>
</h1>
The H2 tags match the News, the H3 are somewhat strange (haven't understood them yet), the H4 match the Profile part in each post... and it's the H5 tags that match the post subject.
H2, H3, H4 and so on can be duplicated (or even more) without SEO penalty, it's the H1 that has to be in each page just once, so no problem at all with SMF 2.0.
I think thenthis mod shouldn't support 1.1.x because it may hurt then help.
Actually, it can hurt even 2.0 version if the H1 tag (which I posted above) isn't somehow "silenced" (thus making multiple H1 tags instead of one, which is considered bad for SEO). But I haven't looked deeply into this MODs code so I really can't tell.

I had better results with this mod in 1.1 that in 2.0, but in 2.0 the results were very positive
Lucas-ruroken,
The thing is... on this site (SMF) you have a clear H1 tag applied to the forum banner (just check the page source-code) but in your demo site where you have the MOD working there is no H1 tag in forum banner possibly because you're using a custom theme perhaps? Try to apply the MOD to a non-customized default Curve theme and see how many H1 tags you find.
Good work lucas :) you are improving SMF in SEO section

yes, but yesterday, i use curve theme with two tags h1 and I had greats result :)
I also use a custom theme, only place where <h1> tags duplicates is on the topic listings.
But I clearly seeing improvement already on my forums. I haven't tried it on the default theme so i don't know.

Well, I am seeing improvements but it might just be the fact that I tried hard to increase my forums rankings last month. Anyways, I am also using this mod on a custom theme.

I believe in you, just pointed out my observation... actually there is no official support saying that multiple H1 tags are bad, it is just a general feeling among "SEO-experts", but I've already seen Matt Cutts (Google software engineer) saying there is no problem in using multiple H1 tags (if they're not too many of course).
Matt Cutts words are golden, it's like insider info.
Anyways. I wish the Mod writter could modify the code to support only <h1 tag on a single page regardless of themes, but I guess that's hard to do.
thanks op.
you're welcome
Thanks for the mod!
You can make only the first occurrence of the linktree contain h1 tags by checking if something like $context['h1_linktree_shown'] is not set, and then setting it after the first time:

No it is not working on your forum. You need to edit your theme's index.template.php and add the codes manuaaly.
you mean i shud parse the mod and do all modifications manually in index.template.php ??
thanks :)
^^ I mean you should open your theme/index.template.php and add the whole edits manually. The mod already made those edits on the default theme. Assuming you installed it.
V1.0.1 Released
Hi lucas-ruroken, I use your link tree mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2559) and I want to install this mod too but is error on install and when I want to modify the code manually some portion of code are modified.

Hi!
I have installed this mod at two different 2.0rc3 forums. At the forum without a portal, only one h1 tag is added. But at the second forum with the Portamx (http://portamx.com/) portal, two h1 tags are added:
http://www.prielwurmjaeger.de/forum/news/
Any hints how i can fix this? Thanks in advance for a reply.
yeah! attach your index.template.php
Hi!
Thanks for your reply. This is my index.template.php for the portamx portal and the raven theme.
;)
Thanks, works now without a problem!
Perfect!
Greetings
hi lucas, i installed your mod today on my test site just to see how it would go. When i look at the script code using the f12 button on internet explorer i see 4 h1 tags come up in my search. Does that mean this is working right. This thread is kindof confusing to me. Am i only suppose to be able to search for 2? I'm using smf 2.0 RC3 and i hope i explained this right.
I want to check tanx!
can someone, please, explain me the utility of this mod? :)
thanks and sorry for my limits... :)
Improve seo ;)
is it compt. with rc4 yet? if not any plan to do so? thank you
Now.... updated to rc4
Hello all,i have installed Mods "H1 Tags in link tree" and also "H Tag:Improve SEO"
1)What is the difference between these Both Mods??
2)Now my forum got both Mods,can i run these two mods?? or have to run only one??
3)If running two Mods is wrong,what wrong thing will happen to forum for running 2 mods??
4)If running only one mod is preferable,which Mod is the best one??
Please answer all my questions and help me....
1) both mods does the same thing... in differents places
2)No, please use one of both
3) Nothing.... But The result will not be the best
4) yes, but anyone is the same
PD: Sorry for my poor english, I don't speak it very good
you can see if is ok ?
I have unsure
Thank you
It works.
if($count == $i)
echo'<h1 style="font-size: 1em; display: inline;">';
// Show the link, including a URL if it should have one.
In that code you forgot to close the h1 tag. It is giving invalid markup validation. The code can be
if($count == $i)
echo'<h1 style="font-size: 1em; display: inline;" />';
// Show the link, including a URL if it should have one.
hy joker,
but the h1 tag so is not closed
if($count == $i)
echo'<h1 style="font-size: 1em; display: inline;">';
// Show the link, including a URL if it should have one.
echo $settings['linktree_link'] && isset($tree['url']) ? '
<a href="' . $tree['url'] . '"><span>' . $tree['name'] . '</span></a>' : '<span>' . $tree['name'] . '</span>';
if($count == $i)
echo'</h1>';
$i++;
Thanks for the mod, so if I install this mod in my smf 2.0 rc4 I will have no problem even if the h1 tag is duplicated in a page, right?
I recommend delete anothers h1tags
How do I delete them?
attach your index.template.php
This is it
The mod is installed on your theme.
Ok, I see 2 h1 tags in my topic page, is that ok?
In your topic page... I see only one h1 tag ;)
I mean when viewing the source code of a topic in my forum, I can find two h1 tags per page, should I post the link for you to confirm?
Hi!
Thanks for the mod, but I have a big problem: after install, my forum title and menu on top right (mod) the letter size stays very very big (80pix or more)
Can you help me to solve this please?
url of your site?
The mod is not installed on your forum.... -.-
and... please don't hide them smf copyright.
Updated to SMF 2.0 RC5 & 1.1.13
hello, can you tell me if this is roking on my site? (http://reefcollege.com)
yes, It does
I tried to install this mod on my 2.0RC5 forum http://uscleanersnetwork.com (http://uscleanersnetwork.com) I'm using a custom theme.
When I replace <h1> with <span> It makes my centered logo go to far left. I've tried a few variations of code there and it all does the same thing.
What should I change to fix this?
but, this doesnt work in your logo..... It works in your linktree...
Hi lucas-ruroken, do you plan to update this mod to SMF 2.0 Gold.
Thanks, mod user!:)
I plan to update all mod by Adk-Team (SMF Personal)
Compatible with SMF 1.1.14 & 2.0
I installed it on 2.0 Gold with Ambassador custom theme.
Worked like a charm. :)
Perfect ;)
Hi!
Thanks for the smf 2.0 final update. Just a small note, i had to edit my index.template.php like this to get an valid xhtml index page while using portamx 1.3

Hi!
I've attached it at this post. There are some edits in it, which you made a year ago for my raven theme:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=381407.msg2748092#msg2748092
All pages/text viewed in internet explorer 8 appeared bold... after uninstalling it returned to normal.
Hope there is a fix for this if it helps SEO.
smf 2.0 and simple portal 2.33 .... i liked yours too ;)
Updated to SMF 1.1.15 and 2.0.1 ;)
Regards enik...
how do u check if this is acctually working or not ?
hello,
I use just installed this mode on SMF 2.0.2 (Emulated 2.0.1)
i'd like to confirm that its been installed correctly on my custom theme
Please check http://www.ngbuzz.com/index.php/topic,417.0.html i see ONly the Topic Link as Bold top & bottom and not the entire link tree
Nothing much changed .. in internet explorer (8 ) all page is bold text - portal page of simple portal - unuseable sadly.
Other browsers ok.
Also the Bloc template display is incorrect using this mod.
SM 2.0.2/ SPortal 2.3.4 All latest.
Attached:
h1link1.png: incorrect template display
h1link2.png: correct template display
h1link3.png: left text correct; right text all bold - with this mod.
Updated to 2.0.2
I have start the new website and check with the seo software it shows "Your page has NO H1 tags".
don't work on SMF 2.0 RC3
I think there is a small bug in the installer.
After installing this on a SMF 2.02 forum, it doesn't close the /H1 tag, instead is adds a /SPAN
url of your website?
are you using the default theme?
Well, it's a modified default theme, but I didn't change the part that this mod needs to change, atleast that is what I thought :) (link (http://www.chelloo.com/upc))
I have fixed it manually in index.template.php, so for me it's not a problem.
I looked at the install file. It went wrong because this part was missing in my template:
<h1 class="forumtitle">
The next step is to replace the next /h1 with /span. Because I didn't had a /h1 tag to close the forum title, it replaced the /h1 tag from it's own mod.
This is something that could go wrong more frequently because most people replace the title with an image.
does not work with carbon theme :(
any update to this?
HI all,
can someone tell me if this is working on my forum? I installed it, im on 202, br finale, but I can't tell whether it's working or not- it doesnt look like it from viewing the page source.
dropkickrugby.com/forum (http://dropkickrugby.com/forum)
DO I need to put h1 tags around each post title manually? I tried that though and it just displays the tags in the post title..
sorry for any silly questions, would appreciate any help.
Many thanks

Just put your domain to that link i gave, it should tell you what is going on in your web site.
I did use the tool you linked to but it's causing me some confusion and here's why. On another site (NookHDForum.com) that I had NOT installed this Mod on it tells me that I have 2 H1 tags on the page. Does SMF 2.02 put H1 tags in automatically?
When I put Nexus7Forum.com into the tool, which DOES have the mod installed it says I have 3 H1 tags on the page and that I should consider reducing the amount and using H2-H6 tags. So the question is...does this Mod help or hurt a forum's SEO? Does SMF 2.02 already have H1 tags put in and is this mod overkill or is the H1 tag that this mod put in, in a different place where it adds value? (or is the tool you linked to not working correctly and telling me I have H1 tags on a site that does not have them) A little further clarification would be appreciated. I've read the H1 article earlier in this thread so i'm aware of the value of H1 tags. I'm a little confused however by the results I'm getting from this tool you linked to and if this mod will help or hurt a forum. Again...you can try them yourself and see in the tool you linked to.
Nexus7Forum.com - this has the mod installed. The tool you linked to says it has H1 tags in 3 places.
NookHDForum.com - this does not have the mod installed. The tool you linked to says it has H1 tags in two places already.
Advice/Insight?
QuoteDoes SMF 2.02 put H1 tags in automatically?
Yes: the page title element is normally an h1.
Quotedoes this Mod help or hurt a forum's SEO?
I'd argue that it makes things worse these days and should be avoided.
Now i tried it with 2 check sites.

@Babyfacemagee, in that case i guess you don't need to install this mod, your theme already has this tags.
Ok, thanks. I guess you're right that the theme on my sites already have the H1 tags included. Thanks for the help guys.
