Support for Curve and Core built in, will support most themes based on either one,
and any theme that doesn't have it's own Display.template and uses Curve's or Core's Display.template instead.
This mod adds easily customizable, and translatable Facebook Share and Twitter Tweet -buttons to topic view.
You can customize the FB button text, by editing the language string
$txt['facebooksharer_button'] in Modifications.{your language}.php
English and Finnish strings included in the package.
Notice!Upon installation this mod will add two database columns named facebooksharer_board_enable and twittersharer_board_enable in to the boards table of your forums database. These columns hold the boardsettings for this mod.
SharerWithDBUninstall.zip version of the package, upon uninstallation will remove the same columns,
so after uninstalling, the settings for this mod will not be retained.
SharerNoDBUninstall.zip version of the package, upon uninstallation will not remove the same columns,
so after uninstalling, the settings for this mod will be retained.
Also, a separate uninstallsharer.php available, that removes the columns if you should need it.

Its possible to show all comments on facebook from the topics posted via rss?
Like I said in Show facebook comments on topic (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=412846.0) it's actually up to Facebook - and since FB usually only displays you (or anyone) info on people you already know,
it would not be too easy to manufacture something that would allow you to follow up on everything people do.
soo many board to enable setting. is the any option to including all boards automatically?
Not at the monent, no - but that's a good idea, and I'll try to remember that for the future. :)

I've been loving your mod and so have my members. There's just one thing that I'm trying to figure out how to control. The person is allowed to choose which thumbnail to use for their post before they share it on Facebook. Unfortunately, it is pulling in the images that people use from their signatures. Is there some way to block it from pulling the images from the signatures and/or to always pull a generic image that you create for the site, so people can't choose?

Sorry, no - Facebook controls that side of the functionality.
Actually, I first only thought of how to limit some images out - but then I came to think that FB might offer a setting to force it to use one and the same image always - but that would then completely remove the option to choose. I'm not sure of this though, and will have to look in to it.
I'm a bit busy with christmas and all for the next few days, but I'll get back to this later on.

No, like it says in the description it just adds a share button to topics. No like button anywhere, no button at all on index.

Just add a line in your meta tags, with the following

Is it possible to post also the title to facebook, not only the url?
It gets the page title for the topic you are sharing, so what's the problem exactly?
when i testet it, there was no page-title on facebook, only the link :(

Running a fresh install of 2.0 RC4 using the core theme.
Installed the mod without error. Enabled the master on check box.
Turned it on for my general discussion forum, but the share button/link does not appear.
OK, if you change to Curve for a second - does it work with Curve?
Also, after you have installed it, activated it, and turned it on for that board - do any errors come up in your error logs?

Yeah you're right. Several mods I've had issue with worked perfect with curve... I guess I should just stick with it.
There seems to be indeed a small glitch with Core, I'll fix this tomorrow if I have the time ;)
Reverted my changes from yesterday, after finding out the actual problem in Core install not working was due to a typo in 1.0 - Fixed the typo, and some other small typos, and released 1.2 today. Hope it works for everyone, it works for me :)
Absolutely super and much better than anything similar I've tried out before. To be able to chose which boards to be able to share on a message board lika mine which is mainly closed down for the public i super. No more stupid dead end links to "you have no permission to visit this board" which would drive myself as a visitor almost insane.

I've installed this mod on my SMF RC4 forums. It seems to work as the button appears on the threads in the board that I've chosen, however...
When the pop up window appears, the thumbnails that I can choose from are all the avatars of the members that have written something in the thread that I want to share instead of the actual thumbnail images that the members have uploaded to that thread.
I have a mod named Highslide installed which is a nice pic viewer of the images that the user submits to their message so don't know if that is what is causing the issue or if there is a problem with this mod.
Any help to get this working properly with the thumbnails would be greatly appreciated.
The Popup uses images that it can see on the page, and how it selects those images is up to Facebook. Just make sure guests can see the images, and Facebook should be able to pick them up. If not, I do not know what to do, since that is not actually a function in the mod, but in Facebook itself.

I guess I'll have to decide whether to allow all guests to see and download attachments or unfortunately not have to use your great mod. I think it likely that it would be a drop in our new subscribers if they don't have to register to download our files or see images without registering.

You can force Facebook to use a specfic image for your site.
Here is a sample meta code to add to index.template.php before the </HEAD>

When I add that code I get the following:

In case you need to force an image, you can use this. But this will remove the option to select an image based on the page completely. The best place to put this, would be where all other meta lines already are. ;)

Just got one question though. Prior to having this MOD. I had the Facebook_Like_V.1.4 mod in place......But once i installed your FBSharer_1.3 MOD.....It makes the Facebook_Like_V.1.4 mod not appear on the forum anymore.. Does the Sharer override the "like" one?
I'm not sure - I haven't tested them together, so I don't know, but it's possible that they don't work well together since they are both FB tools, and basically very similar in funtionality.
yeah, could be.. i remember having a similar issue once on wordpress... now i just have to decide what is used more.. the share or likes!....i am guessing the "Share" is used more..
Is there a way to force the share button all the way to the right because it looks kinda out of place hanging out behind the Topic Title.
Probably there is a way, but I haven't yet come up with a smart and easy way to do that. I have been thinking the same though.

I manage our Student Club's forum and I'm using SMF 2.0 RC5. Your addon works perfect at the forum.
Due to the fact that the forum should only be visible to the registered students, I have limited the permissions and visitors cannot see the topic's content, however, they are able to see the topics, categories etc.
When I share a topic on Facebook, "Login" text is shown instead of the topic. Is it possible to overcome this problem without letting visitors to see the content?
Not really. I think you can use meta tags to force a topic and a static thumbnail for the shares, but that kind of defeats the purpose of sharing topics instead of sharing the forum index.
Using RC 5 fresh install with the "Touch" theme. It does not seem to work do I have to do a manual install?l
I do not know the theme in question, so I can't say anything for sure.
Was the theme installed already before you installed the mod?

Yes,, Also it appears it works with the default theme. Do you know what edits might be required to use it with my theme?
If it appears correctly with the default theme, then most likely your theme has a Display.template.php of it's own, and the mod edits were not done to it correctly. You could parse the mod on the modsite to see what edits are supposed to be done to that file upon installation of the mod.

Below the subject title (which is the link on fb).....it doesnt show a preview of the thread, in the share at all, only the post subject title again.....Any suggestions on that?

Honestly thank you, but I rather not pile up translations inside the package. I could however collect ready translated string like yours to the first post, where people could just grab them and add to their own Modifications.*lang*.php if they wish.

That's what I mean. I couldn't get it to install on 2.0 Final w/o emulating RC5. I got the "package you are trying to install is either corrupt or blah blah blah" notice. It works on 2.0 once I emulated though.

I have noticed that when i install the mod to my forum and emulate the version to SMF 2.0 RC5, it installs fine. But once installed i cannot view or use the features, its like it didn't install.

Check out if it works OK on english, if it does - then it installed OK, but your language strings are missing and in need of manual edits ;)

Hi and thanks Lex for a super mod.
I have managed to install it on custom theme on SMF 2.0 with emulation to RC5, all the admin functions are there, but i'm a little confused about how to share the topic with FB, whilst the share button sends the link it does not show the title just the login for the forum, now the forum is locked down tight as i can make it and therefore guests are not allowed to view the forum boards even though i have let the FB board become viewable to guests. Can you tell me how i would let access become available to the guests off facebook and also how to automatically post to a group and not given the option of posting to their wall?
The sharer only works for topics / areas visible to guests. This is because FB does not trust you about the content, and checks it out for itself.
The group functions and such are not exactly within the Sharer.php scope of functionality, and would require a different method of sharing topics to FB.
OK i've opened up the board to guests, they can see it and post in it, but when you send the share link it only takes you to the website not the forum topic?
That is most probably because facebook has already seen the area closed to guests and has cached that result.

I'm really not sure how that works on FB's side - I just know I've seen it happen before. You could try if you now create a new topic in that board, and try to share it - how does it appear on FB?

it wont appear on fb at all now within the group, if i publish it to my own wall it works ok but still with a link to the login page, but it wont publish to the group its intended for ???
Ok it now appears to work fine in the group and to page, linking the topic to fb and from facebook to the site. Is it intended that if someone comments on FB that the comment would appear in the forum post?
I know i'm probably missing something simple, but i'm nearly there :)
The Sharer only does the link share from forum to FB user's wall - All the rest you might want to do with it depends on facebook, and may need you to use further tools.
The Sharer.php is simply a sharer ;)

It is not compatible, I tried to emulate but to no avail, I do not understand where mistake.
I'd just guess the version you put down in the advanced options is not exactly correct.
But I'll try to update this package soon - in the next couple of days, so you don't have to wait for long if you can't work it out by then...

It would make a really good mod. I can't aerie dingy at hard as there quite similar.
Can I have a request a small fix and what I found annoying install your Facebook mod. I notice I bad to enter each board and select the Facebook tick box. I found I needed it on quite a few boards... It would be better to have it so when you install the mod.... It does it on ALL boards, then you can untick on each board the one you don't want it to cover.. Your find this would be easier for installers.
Or you could have a page in the option panel with tick box with the lard title all on one page... What's easier?
Actually that's one thing I've been thinking about - Which would be easier for MOST users, activate all by default - or none by default.
I haven't really made up my mind about it yet to be honest - both have their pros and cons...

Fixed a small issue in the mod installation routine - For those who have this mod working correctly already, this update 1.5 is not necessary. ( While I was at it, I also changed the default board setting to be active - so after installing, all boards should be active unless deactivated. )

Added Twitter support, made some tweaks to the layout (and tested these on IE and FF - but if something is wrong, let me know) called it 2.0 - and removed 1.* versions from the modsite :)
And I made it so that it will install with ALL boards selected to be used with both FB and Twitter,
so make sure to uncheck the settings from those boards that are not visible to guests :)
I entered the Italian language, useful? I'd say google plus button to add ..:)

Just installed this afternoon. Clicked the master setting and unchecked my Admin only board and Off-Topic board which is not able to be seen by guests. Shared a topic as a test on Twitter and worked perfectly. No errors in the log at all.
(I'm really glad you have it so the boards are automatically sharing because I would have hated to have gone through all my boards to de-select them from being shared.)

Future plans:
I'm thinking about splitting this mod so that I would keep this which has both FB and Twitter, and possibly add to it later ( G+ etc. ? ) as the main package - and the one with the most options ( with or without installer, separate db uninstaller etc.)
And then make smaller simpler packages for each FB, Twitter, G+ etc. separately, with only one package each - with a db uninstaller, so that all settings would be removed when the package is uninstalled. The smaller packages would probably not be compatible with eachother though, so you could not pick and choose - It would be only one, or all of them.

Man I have such bad luck w/ getting any facebook mods to work lol... yours looks like the best so far but... I installed/enabled and it only shows the "Tweet" button, right next to it there is text that reads "SHARE" but no Facebook button. The share text changes color on mouseover but there's no link associated w/ it or anything. Twitter button works. I'm using the Curves Multi-Color Theme but the mod acts the same way on the default curves theme as well. Site is am.wrex-racing.com

Like button is not as simple as Share and needs a bit of more code to work, and I am trying to keep this mod fairly simple.

I have installed your mod... everything was fine for some days. but something happened now.... When I click on share as you can see in the picture below... It does not show the topic title .... It says "Login".... Any solution...

The main topics are not visible to guests but they can see the boards... :O
You are sharing direct links to the topics, so you are sharing links that guests can not see - for the shares to work correctly, the topics need to be visible to guests.

Facebook gets the contents of the shares by visiting the url that you are sharing, and if that url is not visible to guests, smf directs it to the login screen.
Any chance of a quick update to install into 2.01. I know I could manually edit it in, but that makes uninstall later for updates ugly.

Since upgrading 2.0.1 the sharer mod is not working for me. I tried using the emulate feature to show a 2.0 install and got an error message.
I think I fixed it, I did a code replace with using 2.0 emulate it seems to be working.
Would ya please have a look at my attached file.
I'm not sure if the manual edit was done correctly.
Unfortunately this ocurred due to clashing with another mod.
I was looking at this mod due to it doing the combined job of two mods I previously had installed.

And those are restrictions from Facebook - I can not do anything about them.

Check the manual installation instructions, and see the edits done the default theme files. Then try to adapt them to your custom theme. Mainly this means edits to display.template.php only.
Upgraded our site at

Take the installsharer.php included in the mod package, upload it to your forum root and point your browser to it.
It should add the necessary changes to your database then. ( Also delete the file after making sure everything went ok. )

I also have one mod in the misc section and that is "Facebook like mod" I realized that it is now working now and the Facebook and Twitter Sharer ( 2.0 RC4 -> 2.0 ) is also not working. DO you think it has something to do with the SA Facebook integration? Aren't they compatible?

I went through this thread to see if this was addressed, but it wasn't, so I'll go ahead and ask: This mod is putting the share button in for the whole topic, with the buttons appearing in the topic title bar, but I'm interested in customizing this so that it appears in every post, with the buttons sharing a link to that specific post.
I'm about ready to go through the code and see if I can manage something like this on my own, sometimes I can and sometimes I can't (mainly because I don't really know php but I try my best to improvise), but I thought I'd ask if this is ultimately possible and if it's practically easy to accomplish. ;D

Okay, so it gave me the same "corrupt or incompatible" message that someone else mentioned earlier in this thread. So I went through the process of editing all the files myself, double-checked after it wasn't working properly, installed the db.php file (and confirmed the columns existed) and still nothing. The problem is that it wasn't displaying the buttons themselves, and, when I went into my admin settings, to modify boards, it was telling me about a parse error in Subs-boards.php. I didn't jot it down, something about an unexpected character or something... I'll try all of this again and hope for the best. I don't know what it means to install with a version emulator, so I guess I'll have to learn about that and give it a spin that way if this doesn't sort out. I'll keep you posted. Modified Curve, by the way, with all the relevant files in the default folder.
Okay, so I figured out how to emulate version, so I managed to install this without a problem. :) I'm assuming that whatever problem I had earlier in manually installing it was just an error of my own doing... ::) ;D
I'm wondering how I can get rid of the count that comes with Facebook's button. I read on their page for the share button that I can change the type of button to get rid of it, but it seems like this will conflict with the "text/javascript" settings that have already been established. Is there a way you know that I can keep the style of the button as is (which I really like and want to keep, it looks great with the twitter button) without that count?
As I was mentioning earlier, I'm interested in changing it so that each post has it's own set of buttons that share the link for that specific post. It looks like I'd need to change this code here to make this happen...

... which should be pretty easy to manage. Then I'd just need to put the whole code in another spot in the template file that corresponds with the individual post. This doesn't work under emulation for 2.0.2. I haven't checked the errors yet (might be something trivial, but I'm at work so I can't edit and upload code), but I was really hoping this gets updated some time soon. It's the only sharing mod that I've seen that is discreet and also puts the buttons in the title bar instead of in the message body, or a huge floating bar or popping icons or unicorns dragging banners and whatnot.

ive asked my host and he says nothing has changed... the twitter button still works and where the FB button is supposed to be it says SHARE and it highlights like a link but doesnt work... my friend says he cant see it either and ive tried chrome and firefox with ABP off, also IE9 is same

I have tried an uninstall and reinstall but still same - I will say that the uninstall had 1 error but i just went ahead with it after backing up with softaculous, I had to emulate SMF 2.0 to get it to install/uninstall etc - anyway results are the same... I think its FB API like you say
Yes, it still doesn't show. But those install/uninstall error messages are usually pretty useful in telling you if and what's wrong, if you examine the lines where the error occured...
Afaik, Sharer is not recommended by FB anymore, in favor of the like button, but should work perfectly none the less.
I'm sorry I haven't updated yet, but I'm just incredibly busy IRL..
You're right about Like vs Share though indeed there are lots of services that use Share (and I hate Like... stupid FB!).

wierd - it has come back but wrong/different, the word SHARE is still there but no longer a link and a new FB SHARE link is next to it - great.. but in chrome it completely removes everything from the top bar

I can pretty much promise the problem is not in the mod itself, it's working perfectly on my own forum still. The latest 2.0 version I might add.
Snadge, before blaming the mod it'd be useful to at least take a look at the errors your SMF throws at you.

i have checked error log and I have 44,000 errors all from same thing prettyurls or my theme, im gunna try and get help with that - but the mod worked fine until few days ago and changed - because the facebook button changed from one button too another obviously points too changes on FB API - i dunno why yours is still working the same, probably cached or sommit? - its a completely new button now and it seems to me the mod needs updating to work with it properly
Actually - It does seem I have to take that back... It seems like FB just decided to change it all of a sudden, no matter the millions of sites using the original sharer.php...
So, at this moment - this mod is outdated, and as far as I can see, might not repairable as is. I will need to see if I can get a similar mod done with the current options FB offers,
but I'm sorry to say I'm doubtful, because I will not make a mod using XFBML. Period.

big difference. originally I thought maybe it ate its button cause I had to "fix" what button to use in our store...did not like the one showing. It still works. But our forum button has disappeared totally, not even the text is showing.

I have now the Tweet button and the F image with the Share link and when I hit it to share it opens up a window like my store has---where you can add your comment to the top and even click the area of text from the post that gets shared to edit what needs to be edited there too along with if there are images on the page you can choose an image, including the one from the post (if not an attachment)
I just had to remember to also edit the display.php from the templates folder since it came with its own and does not use the default one.
I love that you can choose which categories/sections you can allow the sharing from.

Since guests can see our forum (not post) you might be able to see the buttons in action. In IE you need to be logged in though to use the FB share link.
I've been inactive for some time, for personal reasons, and have not looked on to this because of that. I may see if I can rebuild this, in a few weeks when I have some time off from everything else..

Yes the buttons work for both FB and Twitter, I am using the latest version of SMF and just as mysteriously as it quit working (even did not show up) it started again so it must have been something FB did on their end.
I cleaned up the template code a bit, removed some configuration options to make space for upcoming additions to this mod, and tried to make the buttons look like they are supposed to. For one reason or another, the FB button seems shaky, jumping all over the place at times - while staying exactly where I want it at other times - but at the moment I'm not about to stress over that too much...
Here is my work in progress, feel free to test it out and tell me if you find any oddities in it :P ( But do uninstall any old versions before doing this ). And do remember this is a work in progress, not a released version yet... Though, it might be soon.
This is only for 2.0.3.
Downloaded and installed. Just a note, your edits to subs-boards.php and load.php are a bit problematic because there are quite a few mods doing stuff there, so the string to be replaced cannot be found... I'd suggest using a shorter string to find/insert after :)
So, it seems to work nice! The FB button does indeed appear a bit off (see screenshot) but functionality seems complete.

the like button is from another mods. The share button do not appears as it appeared as the red colour word "error" instead. :)
have you tried removing the other mod with the like button, it might be that it is conflicting with the sharer mod.
I looked through all the files and it should not make a difference of id since when you click the link it will post on the persona facebook page---the one that clicks the share link.
when you installed the plain like one it may have changed the code to the sharer mod...you might have to uninstall them both, then manually remove the codes from your server files, then only install the sharer mod which is really better to just use one.
maybe it is your own facebook account that is not behaving. I just clicked the share link and it worked for me
I do notice that it is gone from some posts so maybe you did not choose to show the button for share in admin area?

I looked through all the files and it should not make a difference of id since when you click the link it will post on the persona facebook page---the one that clicks the share link.
when you installed the plain like one it may have changed the code to the sharer mod...you might have to uninstall them both, then manually remove the codes from your server files, then only install the sharer mod which is really better to just use one.

Erm, before this the like mods and the share mod working fine.
Can you see the share button in the thread? Or just the red word "Error" ?

Just wondering if there is something that IE needs to be encoded into your mod --- or a stylesheet "fix" for IE.
You mod works perfectly with buttons showing and sending the post to twitter and Facebook BUT
At times, regardless of theme we use in the forum, the facebook share button just disappears from view in Internet Explorer. See image please....then as mysteriously as it goes away i comes back for a bit just to go away again later on whether a day or week later.
I did view source and it is listed in the source for the page but it just does not show up
Another thing, when it does show in IE and the other browsers, there is the "share" text next to the button, it isshown in blue which is hard to see on dark themes. I tried changing the words to "Share This" but it made no difference at all, the text does not change and the color stays the same.
Is there a way to get the button a little larger?

If you install it it will work. I have it and it works, I would just like the button and text larger
It'd be awesome if you could make this package compatible with SMF 2.0.7, it installs fine, but the package-info.xml is outdated. A quick <install for="2.0 - 2.0.99"> and <uninstall for="2.0 - 2.0.99"> should do the trick ;)

This mod works beautifully in 2.0.7 and to install it you just need to tell package manager to make the forum be like 2.0, then after installation reverse the version back to 2.0.7
I use it in our forum and with the exception of the Facebook button being so small or disappearing at time...LOL there are no problems

Well I don't need the FB part so that won't be a problem. I am just looking for something that we can use to post new threads to our twitter.
Can I download it, and chance the package-info.xml before I upload and install it? Will that keep me from having to emulate?

I have done that with some packages before and yes it works on some. The best way is the way I described via packages for in case the base coding has changed since the package was created.
Bear in mind that when you use the button to post a link to the thread, it will do so on your account there only. Anyone else will go o there account. It does not send to your twitter account by default for everyone.

admin>packages>browse packages>advanced> change the forum version to SMF 2.0 or if that doesn't work then change it to SMF 2.0 RC4 save it then try to install it. I have it installed and it works great.
just remember to go back there and set the forum to the right version again.
I love this mod and it works even in 2.0.11
I was just wondering if there is anyway to either let me use a facebook icon of my own or a different one from facebook cause I have mainly dark gray/ black themes and it is really hard to see it in the title bar area.
Hi all! Sorry for the long silence.
I have kept on improving this mod on my own forums, and may bring my development over here as well at some point stilll, but the current version I have is not usable as is, because it is specifically written for my own customized forums.
I have however still worked on this, and have added small settings functionality to it gradually.
The version still up for grabs here should work still I think, at least I can't remember anything that would have been broken in it.
That is great to hear, I tried installing it in the this latest upgrade but for some reason it will not show up at all. it may just be stubborn or will try again. I think it did show some errors but can't remember what they were now.
Actually, there was something FB changed... Now I remember. It might be the current code here may not work.
Anyhow, I have a little free time coming soonish - perhaps I'll work on this and see where I left it :P
no hurry, enjoy your holidays I am sure the members will unerstand , they have learned that ocassionally I need to remove a mod when it misbehaves.
If I remember right the main problem is that it did not wish to show in the forums...where the icons for twitter and FB are supposed to be were empty.

I had to remove this mod since it doesn't work, Not any more that is, not for the forum nor the zen cart stores both FB and Pinterest.
Yeah, sorry - I have been meaning to go through my manual changes for my own forum, and recreate this updated with working codes - but simply haven't gotten around to it.
This mod should be completely rewritten, so I'm gonna pull the plug on this one. Sorry everyone.
