Simple Machines announces the release of SMF 1.1.14, addressing a vulnerability found in SMF 1.1.13 allowing display name spoofing as well as fixing a MySQL 5.5 compatibility issue. We strongly recommend that all users upgrade as soon as possible.
Upgrade automatically by visiting your Administration Center, where a notice will be displayed prompting you to upgrade. Click the link, confirm the changes and your forum will be up to date again. Additionally, you can upgrade using the package manager by downloading the SMF 1.1.13 to SMF 1.1.14 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/downloads/smf_patch_1.1.14.tar.gz) upgrade package from Package Manger Updates (http://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/) section, uploading it to the Package Manager, and applying it as prompted. For help with this refer to the Package Manager (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Package_manager) section of the Online Manual (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/).
If you cannot upgrade using the package manager, please follow the instructions posted in the Online Manual (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Main_Page) about installing (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Installing) and upgrading (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Upgrading).
It may be necessary to apply the upgrade manually if mod conflicts mean that you cannot install the patch through the package manager. Instructions for doing this can be found on manual upgrades (http://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/) page for SMF 1.1.13.
SMF 1.0.x branch is not affected by this issue. So, for those still using the SMF 1.0.x branch, no change is necessary.
Please note:
As of today, 1.1.14 is no longer the stable branch of SMF, as SMF 2.0 is being released as we speak. 1.1.14 will remain in maintenance stage, and it will continue to be supported for security and major/critical functionality fixes, only it will not receive new features, nor minor bug fixes or improvements.
Finally - please do not use this topic for any support requests. You will get a much more prompt response by visiting the relevant support board!
Regards,
Simple Machines Forum Team
Thanks for clearing those things up.
Finally! Thank you! Although i have to say i'm disappointed with "it will not receive new features, nor minor bug fixes or improvements."
SMF 1.1.14 currently has 15 known bugs according to the bug tracker: http://dev.simplemachines.org/mantis/my_view_page.php (select 1.1 from the list).
Now that 2.0 is out, i really hope that the devs will find a little time to completely fix the 1.1.x branch, even if it's one bug per week/month.
Thank you very much for clearing things up. Nice to know it'll be supported even though 2.0 Gold is now released. (I have some friends who still use, and enjoy using the 1.1.x branch).
Thank you all :)
Thanks to all the team! Installed without a problem through the package manager (as usual!)
Yay For both 1.1.14 and 2.0 GOLD!!!!!!
Thanks!!
Thank you SMF Team!
2.0 is out too BTW!
Good work team. :) Specially the devs.
Thanks for updates to 1.1.14
Unfortunately I cannot simply convert my forums to 2.0 because of the use of Tiny Portal.
My skins will be gone and I don't want do that.
Thanks supporting the safety of 1.1.x!
Hope it will work till the end of times. ;D
Tiny Portal is available for 2.0, as are several other portals.
1.1.x will probably be supported for at least another year, but not until the end of time.
sharks,
why would the devs work on the 1.1.x series any more (other than security issues)? 2.0 is now the official, stable branch.
Hi,
Updated is successfully! :) Thank you very much for your job! :)
This is the first my Package manager did not pick up an update .. maybe i needed to wait a little longer .. installed manually without issues..
Thanks SMF
Congrats team ;D Thanks for the update and nice work :)
is there a thread that shows you how to go from 1.1.14 to the new 2.0? i was able to upgrade from 1.1.13 to 1.1.14 through my package manger, and hoping it will be that easy to go to 2.0 from 1.1.14.... anyhoo..thanks for the direction.
Read the wiki. There are instructions for upgrading in the index.

Congrats on the releases (both this one and Gold)
But...
Is there a reason the 1.1.14 release still states
QuotePowered by SMF 1.1.14 | SMF © 2006-2011, Simple Machines LLC
?
The LLC has nothing to do with this project anymore.
Just installed 1.1.14. Seems ok. Thanks for the update guys. :)
I understand from the comments above and on other places that 2.0 is the better choice and recommended, even on the admin panel it is redirecting now to 2.0, but I still pluck up courage to update to 2.0. I am afraid not to brake my forum. Why not possible in the similar way update from 1.1.x to 2.0? Some kind of an automatic update?
Cheers,

2.0 is released under the BSD license.
1.0.x and 1.1.x will remain under the proprietary SMF license.
Masterd, the license has nothing to do with the copyright statement. The NPO holds BOTH licenses.
Good point. Someone forgot that bit, obviously, and just used the same old index.php edit.
thanks, upgraded to 1.1.14 now
So, LLC is completely out of the picture for both 2.0 and 1.1.x?
I have been asking about this last night when the releasing process was under-way but didn't get any answer.
I found it strange that 2.0 would become NPO and not 1.1.x

Well, as you can see, we still maintain SMF 1.0.x branch. So, there is no ETA regarding the drop of SMF 1.1.x branch support as of now. :)
Thanks, upgraded & everything looks fine.

BTW: Just to clarify for sharks and Dr...
NPO is the organizational structure... The Simple Machines organization (NPO) now owns all properties, trademarks, etc that the LLC used to own.
2.0 is released under the BSD license.
1.0.x and 1.1.x will remain under the proprietary SMF license.
NPO and LLC <> license....
Why does no one actually READ what I write?

Today, we maintain 3 branches of SMF: 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0, for security and major/critical functionality fixes on supported platforms.
At some point we intend to drop maintenance for 1.0.x (stable released in 2004) - please note:
1.0, not 1.1. That old branch is STILL maintained as of today.
The intention as of now is like this:
- we will announce the start of the process, for 1.0 forums, and 1.0 forums will have at least 6 months (or more) to upgrade from that moment, until that branch (1.0) hits end of life. The announcement will be made on this forum, email, admin panel, at least, possibly download or dev page as well.
- during those 6+ months, 1.0 is still an active branch, and will continue to receive security and critical functionality updates. (i.e. these days we implemented MySQL 5.5 compatibility for 1.0, too, not only 1.1, not only 2.0).
-
after that time, the 1.0 branch will reach end of life.
Please note again: we're talking about 1.0, which is still maintained as well as 1.1.x.
SMF 1.1.x will of course be supported far longer than that. SMF 1.1 stable was released in 2006. (yes, 2006). I believe that around or after the release of the NEXT stable version of SMF, 2.1 or 3.0 (whichever comes first :) - j/k), we will take into account to
start a similar process for 1.1 branch. So for 1.1.x line, we're talking about of a further maintenance stage
at least for:
- next stable release (2.1)
- plus 6 months from there, or more.
- possible end of life.
I say "possible" because the process will be open every step of the way to feedback from the community. Given the long time 1.1.x has been the only popular stable version, and it is very popular, and the fact that not everyone may even wish to upgrade, I expect we will maintain it for a long time. :)
When 1.1.x may reach end of life is up to you, to tell us, directly or indirectly. In time, we will see how much it will be used, how much are patches downloaded, how much support is asked, if discussions around it are raised. That says something, and we'll take it into account. Just about nobody seems to remember today 1.0, and that says something as well. :)
Thanks, upgrade goes smooth.
Good news, thanks ;)
thanks for the update to 1.11+ and sorry to hear that it will be the end of it soon too cause I do not use or plan to switch to smf 2.0 yet, if at all.
but I do manage a site with 2.0 rc5---is 2.0 gold to be installed on top of this one?
for some odd reason some of my forums are not sowing the admin link for updating tp 1.1.14

You don't really have to update to 2.0. Ain't broke, don't fix it!
To see the update link, click the Packages link. You'll see the link to update in there.
great cause I am just getting so I can edit the php files and kno where i can put what to show where i wish it to show and...looking at the 2.0 files has boggled my mind...they look so different. eventually we may go to 2.0 especially if the themes and such get as diversified as the ones now cause I don't want to lose them...maybe the theme designers will update 1.1.4 themes for 2.0 as well as a more stable Tiny Portal

ya, i don't see it there yet. bummer. i saw the update to 1.1.14 there, and updated to that... but now i'm waiting for the update to 2.0 shows up there.
oops sorry I misunderstood and thought you meant the 1.1.14 update
since 2.0 seems to be totally rewritten I don't think there will be a direct update to it in packages...I may be wrong but I am not holding my breath at all.
There are no package updates for 2.0. It has to be done via Large update I think.
Thank you, very helpful to me!

ahhh crap then! i'm through godaddy and all that jazz for my server, and not that techy on it... though it seems it could be easy, i'll have to read the faq thing... but man, it is sure easy to see the update in the package manager section, and just update it that way.
man i hope somehow they can make that happen for people that suck at this stuff like me! :)
there will never be a package manager update for RC versions or major upgrades (like 1.1.x to 2.x or 2.x to 3.x)
Just to let you people know, someone forgot to include the upgrade_1-1.sql on the 1.1.4 update package, this is important to people doing the manual upgrade. However, you still can upgrade your smf with the 1.1.4 upgrade package. Which are pretty hidden now > http://download.simplemachines.org/index.php?archive;start=200 (don't know if there's a shortcut)
Besides, I think most people don't know they have to update they data base too, not only the .php files. It would be nice a little advice in the manual update page about this.

maybe cause you got the update package NOT the upgrade package, they are in the upgrade one, I tried to attach them but it won't show the browse button so get the

On behalf of all of us who have made so many changes to our smf 1.1x install that upgrading is not simple, i want to say thank you for this position, which seems fair and sensible. Three cheers for the SMF team!

If you are updating from 1.1.13 manually, you only need the small update archive. No database changes occurred between 1.1.13 and 1.1.14, afaik.
If you are using an older version, you will need the large upgrade archive.

although my forums behave they are like salmons and go against the flow at time...lol
I updated all from admin/packages and found to day that I have to upload the update.php and corresponding file then run it because I got the error message that the files were 1.1.14 but database was still 1.1.13
so it wouldn't hurt to grab the full installer to get the files needed, or is it the upgrader zip...sorry can't reember which one...heat is turning brain to mush
when I click update in package manager it brings me error like:
"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /forum/index.php on this server."
tho the forum works. I even added akismet mod. all works.
Try chmodding the index.php file to 755(?).

That's - Sadly - just a misleading error message. The DB version is not the error, it is just extra info for you to use for debugging the actual error displayed. If the last time the DB was updated, was on 1.1.13 then the DB version will stay on 1.1.13 even with you running the update.php ;)
The actual error you should be looking at, is usually displayed before the DB version notice :)
In short - You can safely ignore the DB version numbering, and concentrate on whatever the error was you actually got.
is there a way to directly update from 1.1.13 to 2.0 with out removing everything and doing it over again?

Major absolute bummer. Not only do I like this branch but I also like an unsupported RC for 2, and it mainly has to do with the Arcade and Gallery. Gold is for me only if I start another board and I have enough trouble getting traffic on my favorite board.

Hello,
I am using version 1.1.12 and would like to transit to smf 2.0 which as I learnt is more stable. Unfortunately because of the several mods installed I cannot use the package manager. Please could someone point me to the right direction. Thank you
THANK GOD atleast we hope this new version is better then older one
THANKS FOR THE NEW VERSION HOPE IT WILL INSTALL CORRECTLY IWTH OUT ANY PROBLEM WHT ABOUT ACTIVATION KEY?
there is not and never will be an activation key with smf.
I'm trying to upgrade from 1.1.13 to 1.1.14 from the hyperlink in the Administration Center. When I attempt the upgrade I receive the following:
Quote
Error in Package Installation
At least one error was encountered during a test installation of this package. It is strongly recommended that you do not continue with installation unless you know what you are doing, and have made a backup very recently. This error may be caused by a conflict between the package you're trying to install and another package you have already installed, an error in the package, a package which requires another package that you don't have installed yet, or a package designed for another version of SMF.
Below that under "Installed Actions" I show the following:
Type: Execute Modification
Action: smf_1-1-13_to_1-1-14_patch.mod
Description: Modification parse error
Theme is DEFAULT.
I seem to remember having a similar issue once before, but can't remember what I did to resolve it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Sorry. I thought it was the correct thread for the upgrade. I'll try to find the proper forum and repost.
Thanks.
I'm a tad confused (yes, I know, it doesn't take much). I get the following on my SMF:
QuoteVersion Information:
Forum version: SMF 1.1.11
Current SMF version: SMF 1.1.14
When I go to the downloads area ???, all I see is 2.0. What really is current? and what update path do I take? ???
check the archives for 1.1.14
http://download.simplemachines.org/index.php?archive;version=62
Also, you should be able to do each update from 1.1.11 to 1.1.14 from the admin panel without doing an upgrade if you want to try that first. Don't forget backups!!
Got my SMF's updated to version 1.1.14. I don't know why I was having such a problem in the beginning, but it finally took and all then went smoothly.
Thanks to everyone for the assistance! :)
