Title: SMF Theme Color Editor
Post by: CyberAlien on June 21, 2011, 07:52:44 AM
This is not a proper theme release, this is a release of online color scheme editor. It can change color scheme of almost any SMF 2.0 theme (and themes for some other software packages).

It is a visual editor: just move sliders to change colors, click "download" button. No need to edit any files, no need to know anything about web design.

Some color variations of Curve theme for SMF 2.0 Gold (click sample image to see editor):

Curve Green:
(http://www.colorizeit.com/images/articles/smf_curve_green.gif) (http://www.colorizeit.com/styles/smf-20-themes/216.smf-curve.html#H67b8ea2M1h32O%7CH6fd9604M1H0uO%7CH6f5f5f0M1H0fO)

Curve Dark Blue:
(http://www.colorizeit.com/images/articles/smf_curve_darkblue.gif) (http://www.colorizeit.com/styles/smf-20-themes/216.smf-curve.html#H67b8ea2M1h5vs2cO%7CH6fd9604M1h63H0uO%7CH6f5f5f0M1H0fO)

Curve Gray / Red:
(http://www.colorizeit.com/images/articles/smf_curve_red.gif) (http://www.colorizeit.com/styles/smf-20-themes/216.smf-curve.html#H67b8ea2M1l1qs00O%7CH6fd9604M1h4sH0uO%7CH6f5f5f0M1H0fO)

Click "Download" button below color editor to download those themes.

You can create almost any color scheme, except for ones that cannot be achieved via color manipulation, such as turning white theme into black.

(http://www.colorizeit.com/images/articles/sample_smf.png) (http://www.colorizeit.com/styles/smf-20-themes/216.smf-curve.html)

SMF theme designers are welcome to upload their own themes. To upload a theme, navigate to SMF 2.0 category (http://www.colorizeit.com/browse/24/smf-20-themes.html) and click "upload" button on the right. Make sure your theme has a live demo before submitting it.

Looks like a great tool enabling people with limited skills to produce a color theme to their preference, well done.

Thank you.

Its not only for users, it is also for designers. Visitors are often looking for theme that matches their website's color scheme. You can offer more color schemes of your themes to your customers, which will help you get more customers.

Great to see it for SMF too now :) I already knew about PhpBB and VB but it's really great it's for SMF too  now :)

Arrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! ;D

Prediction: we will now see a plethora of mindless "Curve variants" flooding the Customize team's backlogs and making the Theme Site even more full of the things than it is now.

Just don't accept damn lazy color filtered custom themes
Title: Re: [Preview] online theme colors editor

Well yeah, but they don't contravene the approval guidelines. I do think we should definitely enforce having all of them by any author on the one page, so people don't churn them out just to say "Look how many themes I've made".
Title: Re: [Preview] online theme colors editor
Post by: MrGrumpy on June 21, 2011, 07:56:02 PM
Well as there is now a color converter there's no need to accept any curve variants that are just color filtered.

Well heres another for you, move this topic to main graphics board, sticky it, retitle it a bit  - "Curve Theme Color Editor" and people can find it easy and go make there own.

Stop filter variants and help members to help themselves and cut down on support for "how to re-color curve"

CyberAlien does great work. I have bought of his stuff over the years including the sites phpbbhs.com and some of style management tools for the old sebflipper scripts. Glad to see you are around.

I will be using this tool or suggesting people to use it xD If you ever do licensing or something would be interested in it as well. Edit: I see the integrations options gotta have to take a look at that looks very well designed.

Now that's using your head. I might run that idea past the rest of the crew.

Saves having to explain about how to download image editors, where to find the image, how to download/upload, what a sprite is etc etc when it does take some effort to learn all that when they can just pop along and move a few sliders, click a button and hey presto themes done and ready to install

Right. This is getting stickied, and from now on the Customize team isn't interested in approving any default theme variants that are just basic colour fillter jobs.

Thank you.

There is a error in default Curve theme: images/im_switch.gif is incomplete. File ends in middle of local palette block, which shouldn't even be there considering that image is not animated. I've replaced it with a fixed file in style on colorizeit.

Its not only for Curve theme, it works with all themes, so changing it to "Curve Theme Color Editor" would be incorrect.

That would just a suggestion, how about "SMF Theme Color Editor" instead then as it covers all themes, I'm just thinking of a way to make it more noticeable to members of exactly what it is.

Great idea!  I need to change my 2.0 colors to match my site's logo and was thinking how nice it would be to have just such a program.  I use Rocket Theme Joomla and my template has a "color chooser".  I gave up on the thought of asking for one here at SMF and was just looking for all the places in CSS to modify.   :)  Thanks a lot.   And, for the SMF folks, you got the thread right where I could find it before asking for help!  :)   It is much appreciated!  I will go play with my new toy (tool).  :)

There is a function for that. If you want to match blue color of Curve theme to a color on your logo, click "match color" button in blue color editor block, enter your color's hex code (or move sliders to set your color), submit form and script will automatically move all sliders to change blue color to one you have entered.

Curve's blue color has very low saturation, so you might have to adjust saturation after using "match color" function or check "do not change saturation" in color match popup.

No need to. Install a new theme from that zip file you downloaded.

Those files are not a new theme, are they?  I need to learn to make a new theme using those files? Copying them over the default did not work.  :(
Title: Re: SMF Theme Color Editor
Post by: CyberAlien on June 26, 2011, 07:06:28 PM
They are. It was created via option to create a new theme, so it doesn't include all template files. It does include all images, css files and other files necessary to install it as a new theme.

To install it click "admin", click "themes and layout" and at the end of page you'll see option to upload file. Put your zip file in that file input and click "install" button.

It came out a little rough.  Did I mess up?

Is it hard to change the text colors manually?  My site color is the dark blue.  I need the background header to be dark blue. It looks like it is going to be hard to do. The dark color is the page background.

Title: Re: SMF Theme Color Editor
Post by: CyberAlien on June 27, 2011, 03:56:56 AM
Its up to theme authors. Option to upload themes is there, all they have to do is upload it. So if you want a specific theme, poke its author.

There is a small catch though: theme has to pass automatic validation. I've noticed that many SMF themes have invalid images, including 1 invalid image in Curve theme (images/im_switch.gif was incomplete: file ended in middle of local palette block, but I've replaced it with fixed image before uploading). Some other themes have png images with .gif extension. It usually can be fixed by simply opening and then saving (better use "save for web" option, so it would optimize image) image in Photoshop.
Title: Re: SMF Theme Color Editor
Post by: Antechinus on June 27, 2011, 04:02:10 AM
The .png renamed as .gif is a deliberate dodge used by themers to get around the fact that SMF markup calls gifs in a lot of places. They want nicer effects so use the renaming trick. ;)
Title: Re: SMF Theme Color Editor
Post by: CyberAlien on June 27, 2011, 04:12:59 AM
I see, so its intentional. :) Problem is, script uses different parsers to handle png and gif images, so if image is incorrect it won't be parsed.

I'll think of a workaround for SMF themes, so such images would be parsed.
Title: Re: SMF Theme Color Editor
Post by: CyberAlien on June 27, 2011, 04:56:46 AM
Changed. From now on script will parse png images with .gif extension instead of showing error message.

Please upload your themes, tell me if you'll encounter any problems.

I have been working with the program and just realized that you can change colors throughout the theme, not just the three areas in sample.  It appears that by clicking on the area of choice and then applying the hex # we can change any portion of the theme.  If so, are their some directions for using the colorizelt.  It seems much more powerful than I first realized.  I am sure that coders have no problem, but the rest of us need a little better explanation of how it works.   I am having hard time getting the sample to show my color changes. It seems I am getting layers of colors.  And on some themes submitted, different areas are being colorized with the three sample shaders. Is there a guide to using the program?

Title: Re: SMF Theme Color Editor
Post by: CyberAlien on June 29, 2011, 03:28:22 PM
I'm not good at writing tutorials, so there isn't one. Best I could come up with is tooltips that you see when you move mouse over different buttons.

Those 3 colors are the most common colors used in theme. Default colors are added by me during validation, they aren't being extracted from style and you can add/remove/change them while editing. I'm not using SMF anywhere other than my test forum, so please tell me if I've missed some other important color used by Curve theme and point me to where I can see it, so I would add that area to a sample image.

Could I just change the forum orange toggle and the board orange heading text to a different color with this mod? It appears the blue template in the first post has it changed to red. Or would it be better to just try to locate and change that font color?

It changes all entries of a color, but you just want to change 2 entries in css, so its easier to edit that in css
Title: Re: SMF Theme Color Editor
Post by: sharks on July 03, 2011, 07:35:43 AM
CyberAlien, instead of just moving the color slider to find the approximate color, is it possible to enter the HEX color code somewhere so that it would automatically adjust the color settings. I think it's a necessary attribute as it gives much more accuracy than just visual estimation. For example, i did custom themes for my SMF 1.1.x forums and also phpBB forum, but i want to upgrade all my forums to SMF 2.0 with default Curve theme, but i want to be able to shift the color codes as accurately as possible, by using the same HEX color codes to make the theme look as close as possible, despite obvious changes in appearance between other forum softwares or version relative to SMF 2.0 Gold. Could you implement a hex color code input box into your theme system? Thanks in advance.

Also, on this page: http://www.colorizeit.com/styles/smf-20-themes/216.smf-curve.html
What is the function of the third color bar?? When i move the slider, i don't see any changes, so i'm wondering which part of the theme is affected.

I think I've found the problem. Image was parsed correctly, but parser didn't change theme id so theme had same id as default Curve theme, which I think was causing some conflicts.

From now on parser will assign unique id to each downloaded theme, so there won't be any conflicts between different color variations of same theme.

No, its there in directory "topic". It seems to be incorrect though. I'll test it.

edit2: found same bug in my old SMF test files, but I can't emulate it anymore. All my tests return correct gif image. I did some changes to gif files parser recently, so probably I've fixed it without even noticing. Will do more tests.

I've used the editor and I love my new colors - thanks for such an easy to use tool!  I've loaded two color variations of the Curve theme, but in both there are some broken images (like the online icon) that work when I switch back to the SMF Curve default theme.  Any idea what I need to do to fix this?

There is a "fix" for this issue if anyone else is experiencing it.

Use the link in the colorizeit.html to go to your saved theme.  Choose the upload files tab (only accepts zip files).  Upload the useron.gif from SMF Curve Default.  Then load the colorized useron.gif to you theme's image files on your server.

Please try again downloading full style with your color scheme. I think I've fixed that problem with useron.gif

Its a bug that sometimes happens with WebKit browsers. Ajax requests just time out without even connecting to server. I'm working on a workaround for this issue, but it will take a while. Until then you can try Firefox, Opera or IE9.

I've changed algorithms a bit, but unfortunately that bug never happens to me, so I'm not sure if it fixed that bug.

You can create almost any color scheme, except for ones that cannot be achieved via color manipulation, such as turning white theme into black.

Awesome 'mod'!

n00b question though, what disallows you from being able to modify the white background color?
Title: Re: SMF Theme Color Editor
Post by: CyberAlien on September 12, 2011, 03:17:36 AM
Add it to editor and change.

Problem with black/white colors is they don't have hue component, so there isn't much to change and often results are rather ugly. That's why it isn't in default editor settings. But you can add it by clicking "add another color" button.

it's seems pretty much for web developer because some time client demand to developer for only change colour of his site but he or she don't know that to change only colour  of his site the developer has to do all the task from the beginning same as to create new site and developer didn't get much payment so it is make costly for him so this the best thing for web developer and the site owner also happy that he could choose the by his own selection  8)

Title: Re: SMF Theme Color Editor
Post by: CyberAlien on September 16, 2011, 03:58:18 PM
It changes colors in whole style using HSL color space.

If you have Photoshop, check out hue/saturation layer. Put it on top of all your layers, click "Master" selection box and select some color from list, change it. You'll notice that Photoshop will change that color and colors close to it in all layers.

That's exactly how this editor works. Even editor's default settings are adjusted to make it work exactly like hue/saturation layer in Photoshop. You select a color, change its hue component, editor changes that color in whole style: all css files and all images. Editor doesn't differentiate between different parts of forum, it changes all colors that match color you are changing.

I hope this helps.

I have uploaded a new colour set and it looks great, so thank you for this tool.

Its an unknown bug that affects only Curve theme. I'm not sure why and can't find it. It doesn't affect any phpBB styles or WordPress themes. I'm working on next version of editor, it has different parser that won't have that bug.

Solution: if image wasn't parsed correctly you should get original image, archive it in zip format, open colorizeit editor and use "colorize my files" option to change that image.

Just discovered a couple more missing graphics. One at the top of each page of a topic, to the left of the word author - not even sure what this graphic shows. And another on the member lists, the graphic for the people that are online.

Unfortunately I am very new to all this so I have no idea what files are doing these graphics.

You need to ask author of that style.

I only upload default styles for different forum packages. All other styles have been uploaded by ether authors of those styles or by third party styles website that has permission (or styles have licenses that do not require such permission) to distribute styles.

That editor was originally designed to work only with phpBB, so it is well known in phpBB community and phpBB section has 150+ styles. SMF and other forum/blog software packages have been added later and I didn't advertise much. That is why SMF section is almost empty... well... other than mysterious bug that affects only Curve theme.

Over this weekend I've started logging all Curve downloads to figure out this bug (not private data, don't worry. only zip files and some debug information from parser that will help me find that bug). Out of about 20 downloads, not one had that problem with invalid gif files.

If you continue to experience this problem, you should try extracting the package on your PC and uploading the extracted files into a sub-directory in your "Packages" directory and try again. For example, if the package was called shout.tar.gz, you should:
1. Download the package to your local PC and extract the files.
2. Using an FTP client, create a new directory in your "Packages" directory (in this example call it "shout").
3. Upload all the files from the extracted package to this directory.
4. Go back to the Package Manager browse page and the package should be automatically found by SMF."

I want white text on a black background with green as the dominant color like the joomla template on this site...

This is not a proper theme release, this is a release of online color scheme editor. It can change color scheme of almost any SMF 2.0 theme (and themes for some other software packages).

It is a visual editor: just move sliders to change colors, click "download" button. No need to edit any files, no need to know anything about web design.

Some color variations of Curve theme for SMF 2.0 Gold (click sample image to see editor):

Curve Green:
(http://www.colorizeit.com/images/articles/smf_curve_green.gif) (http://www.colorizeit.com/styles/smf-20-themes/216.smf-curve.html#H67b8ea2M1h32O%7CH6fd9604M1H0uO%7CH6f5f5f0M1H0fO)

Curve Dark Blue:
(http://www.colorizeit.com/images/articles/smf_curve_darkblue.gif) (http://www.colorizeit.com/styles/smf-20-themes/216.smf-curve.html#H67b8ea2M1h5vs2cO%7CH6fd9604M1h63H0uO%7CH6f5f5f0M1H0fO)

Curve Gray / Red:
(http://www.colorizeit.com/images/articles/smf_curve_red.gif) (http://www.colorizeit.com/styles/smf-20-themes/216.smf-curve.html#H67b8ea2M1l1qs00O%7CH6fd9604M1h4sH0uO%7CH6f5f5f0M1H0fO)

Click "Download" button below color editor to download those themes.

You can create almost any color scheme, except for ones that cannot be achieved via color manipulation, such as turning white theme into black.

(http://www.colorizeit.com/images/articles/sample_smf.png) (http://www.colorizeit.com/styles/smf-20-themes/216.smf-curve.html)

SMF theme designers are welcome to upload their own themes. To upload a theme, navigate to SMF 2.0 category (http://www.colorizeit.com/browse/24/smf-20-themes.html) and click "upload" button on the right. Make sure your theme has a live demo before submitting it.

I am so sorry. I am a real beginner at this and I couldn't even follow your instructions, as easy as it sounded, I couldn't even find the sliders to change colours! I wanted my background to be black and then the category titles to be in red.  Do you think you would have the time to tell me step by step? I also wanted to change that 'My Community' title that is in the top left, can I change that title? You seem so well learned about all this stuff, I am new here and look forward to being educated by you all. If possible, can I change the URL name of my forum do think?  Look forward to your reply.

How do I get this to work and what do I have to do to get it and get it to work???? We are desperate, we do not know anything about coding or anything.
When you download it how do you install in your forum? Through admin install?

CyberAlien,

Have you seen the tool at the SMFHacks website? The link to it on their website is on their sidebar menu, and it is labeled "Theme Generator". You can work your way through it selecting the colors for all of the different parts of the page, along with supplying image filenames, and then it will generate a "style.css" file that you can apply to your forum.

If you haven't seen it you should check it out.

Don't worry yourself sick over stuff like this. It's not worth it. :)

The editor mentioned in the OP here is an online app. You don't download the editor itself. What you do is upload a theme to it, edit the colours, then download the edited theme as a zip. That is then installed to your forum via the admin themes page. If the online editor will give you a result you like, I'd definitely use it. If it wont, you have other options.

Do note that there are already quite a few colour variations of the 1.1.x Core theme, which uses the same images as the 2.0.x version. These are just image and css packs that can be exchanged for the defaults. You could use the images directly in 2.0.x, but the css would stll have to be edited manually, if you chose that route. If you need help with any code edits, people are usually happy to provide advice and/or help.

We are a Paint Shop Pro Graphics Tagging forum.  We are running smf 2.0.2 core theme.  We are able to change headers but that is about all.  We only want to be able to change our colors to compliment our headers.  We do not know anything about coding or uploading ftp, dummies we are, lol.
I am attaching a for instance, with the blue we are stuck.  The one with yellow and green, I made that header for our blog, but it sure will not go with the blue.  We have our forum like we want it, just started up in August so we are good for now, if we could just get this color thing right.

Many thanks

Ok, so you're good with graphics? Cool. The header background is an image set over a hex code, controlled by the catbg class:

(http://taggingfriendz.com/Themes/core/images/catbg.jpg)

The css is here, in index.css:

/* Generic, mostly color-related, classes.
------------------------------------------------------- */

.titlebg, .titlebg2, tr.titlebg td, tr.titlebg2 td
{
color: #000;
font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-weight: bold;
background: url(../images/titlebg.jpg) #E9F0F6 repeat-x;
}
.catbg, .catbg2, tr.catbg td, tr.catbg2 td, tr.catbg th, tr.catbg2 th
{
color: #fff;
font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-weight: bold;
background: url(../images/catbg.jpg) #88A6C0 repeat-x;
}
.catbg, .catbg2, tr.catbg td, tr.catbg2 td, tr.catbg th, tr.catbg2 th
{
background: url(../images/catbg2.jpg) #A1BFD9 repeat-x;
}

If you want to keep the gradient you'll have to change the image (keep the same name for the new one). If you want a flat colour there, just use a hex code. There are some re-coloured images already available, but they may not be suitable. You can grab them from inside the images folder of this old 1.1.x theme if you want to try them out: Default MultiColour (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/?lemma=158)

Do NOT try to install the whole theme on a 2.0.x site. It wont work. I've attached the green ones below.

You will probably also want to change the hex codes for these classes:

/* Alternating backgrounds for posts, and several other sections of the forum. */
.windowbg, #preview_body, .content, .roundframe
{

Ok, I was able to find the codes through admin area.  How would you go about installing the files?
The different color ones?

Boogalou99. that is only for 1.x themes not 2.0 themes :)

I thought that the Style.css could be applied against any theme. I have a lot to learn. Thanks.

no as people may change padding etc for the theme so using a new style.css from default will alter it.

Thanks, and I am starting to see other things that could /would be changed. I have started learning about CSS, and I see that using a generator could really affect what you end up with versus what you started with. But at the same time, I am also seeing that if you are knowledgeable about CSS, you can control everything. Of course if you are knowledgeable enough, you don't need the use of a generator tool.

I know that I am quickly getting outside of the scope of this topic, but if anybody is interested in learning about CSS, I have found an online tutorial that I really like at htmldog.com.

I found this almost by accident while browsing the official SMF forums, and was surprised to see that someone had created a javascript site that enables click-n-pick color variations of the Curve theme! and a few variations of some other 5 themes as well. Although none compare to the professional customized works of Bloc, IMHO.

I know it seems like child's play to you lot...I'm obviously well out of my depth. I don't have the curve theme at the moment, so I should download it first? Is it the Adk Curve theme I need? Then I can download my chosen colour scheme? Sorry to be dumb, I'm a genius in other areas of my life. Honest.

Nobody thinks you're dumb, none of us are born knowing this stuff, believe me  :)

Above, you said you had already downloaded a colour-changed theme from Colorizeit.  Which theme was that, out of interest?  You should now be able to install that theme on your forum the normal way, in Admin > Themes and Layout > Manage and Install Themes > Install a new theme from a file.  Navigate to the zip you downloaded from Colorizeit, upload to your forum, then proceed to install and see what it looks like  :)

Here's the relevant bit from the link Gary posted above.  I have scratched through the first bit since you downloaded your theme zip from Colorizeit and not the theme site:

QuoteFrom a file -- a theme archive file, such as can be found on the Simple Machines Theme Site
        Find a theme archive file in the Simple Machines Theme Site and download the file to your desktop. Be certain that this theme is compatible with your version of SMF. The version is also listed on the page where you downloaded the theme. Themes for 1.1.* will not work on 2.0.* and 2.0.* themes will not work on 1.1.*.
        Click the "Browse" button to the right of the "from a file" label.
        From the pop-up, navigate to the theme file (still compressed as a .zip or .tar.gz file) on your computer.
        Click Install and confirm if you want to install the theme in the popup
        Installation will take a few seconds. If all goes well, the installer will tell you that the theme "... was installed successfully."
        From your profile, select the theme, to test it.
        If you have any difficulties with the theme, switch back to the SMF default theme by using theme=1 in your query string (example: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?theme=1)

Edit:  Oh and for info, Curve is the name of the default theme that comes with SMF v2.  It shows under your installed themes as "default" hence the confusion  :)

Thanks :) OK, currently I have pink art installed. I went to Colourize it and picked the Curve theme and fiddled with the colours, then downloaded it. So this will change the theme and colours on my forum if I install it? I just thought I'd have to install the right theme in my forum first, if you know what I mean. Just don't want to screw up my forum (yes, I at least had the wits to save it first!) ;)
Title: Re: SMF Theme Color Editor
Post by: Chalky on July 21, 2013, 06:46:45 AM
Yes you should just be able to install the theme you just downloaded independently of any themes you already have.  Hang on one sec, I'm going to install one from there on my test site  ;)

This is not a proper theme release, this is a release of online color scheme editor. It can change color scheme of almost any SMF 2.0 theme (and themes for some other software packages).

It is a visual editor: just move sliders to change colors, click "download" button. No need to edit any files, no need to know anything about web design.

Some color variations of Curve theme for SMF 2.0 Gold (click sample image to see editor):

Curve Green:

(http://www.colorizeit.com/images/articles/smf_curve_green.gif) (http://www.colorizeit.com/styles/smf-20-themes/216.smf-curve.html#H67b8ea2M1h32O%7CH6fd9604M1H0uO%7CH6f5f5f0M1H0fO)

Curve Dark Blue:

Curve Gray / Red:

Click "Download" button below color editor to download those themes.

You can create almost any color scheme, except for ones that cannot be achieved via color manipulation, such as turning white theme into black.

SMF theme designers are welcome to upload their own themes. To upload a theme, navigate to SMF 2.0 category (http://www.colorizeit.com/browse/24/smf-20-themes.html) and click "upload" button on the right. Make sure your theme has a live demo before submitting it.

This may seem like a "simple" question..... but if I modify the Curve Theme in the tool, do I need to change the name or can I upload it as Curve?  I want to stay with the "SMF default theme - Curve" but want different colors.

Can I / should I do this?

I'm saying do it as "SMF default theme - Curve" so that is the only theme available.  not "SMF default theme - Curve", Curve Blue, Curve Green,....

ie just change the colors on the default theme

Do not forget, you can install the theme, then go and set it as default and set everyone to using it, as well as set to not allow them to change theme. That way, your default Curve stays intact.

Are there any other options out there to accomplish something similar?

There are oodles of Curve color variants on the theme site: http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?action=search;type=13

Most of these should be simple to adapt to the responsive Curve mod. IIRC none (or very little) of that mod deals with colours.

If you want a couple of dark ones: http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2428 :D

Thanks.  I was kind of hoping to have themes available to match each of the colour schemes our motorcycles were sold in.  So a blue/white, a black/grey and black/red

Possibly too ambitious, and complicates the mods thing whereby I'd need to reinstall them, (presumably) to have the changes made into each theme version.
