Title: SMF 1.0.6 Released
Post by: Grudge on January 28, 2006, 06:39:21 AM
Simple Machines is happy to release a new update to Simple Machines 1.0. This release addresses a cross-site scripting vulnerability in 1.0, as well as fixing a few bugs caught since the release of 1.0.5.

Important Note for Users of SMF 1.1
This release does not effect anyone currently running SMF 1.1 - do not run this update!

You can update to SMF 1.0.6 in one of three ways:

Awesome!

Would we lose our current installed mods when we upgrade?

I'm glad that I'm one of the first people to upgrade to SMF 1.0.6 :D
Keep up the good work SMF :)

Why is the SMF 1.0.5 released topic still pinned, and this one isn't?

<offtopic>Also, why isn't SMF 1.0.5 in my forum's change log (http://www.daniel15.be/forum/changelog.txt)?
Title: Re: SMF 1.0.6 Released

I can't seem to install it on my 1.0.5 board >:O

An Error Has Occurred!

The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

127.0.0.1, that's interesting. Is that the one you try install via package manager or one you downloaded from the first post here? It works fine for me, can you try downloading again?

daniel15 - 1.0.5 never made it into the changelog - I believe as it was only a security fix which we tend not to changelog.

What is a cross-site scripting vulnerability?

Please update the "news" above, it still says

"If you're not yet using the latest version, SMF 1.0.5, please upgrade as soon as possible." :)

I went to the admin panel, that red texted message showed up so I clicked the link to upgrade and then I got the error.

I already downloaded the 1.0.6 upgrade package, but I didn't want to upload it yet because in case I might lose some installed mods.  Better yet my custom smilies and skin.

Is there a way to install the package manually without losing custom smilies/skins?

i don't understand... index.php is in root directory, and i don't install mode manual, i follow link in: " It is recommended that you update your forum"
Title: Re: SMF 1.0.6 Released
Post by: mrselnombre on January 28, 2006, 09:51:35 AM
I did too, and mine is still telling me to upgrade. I even checked the files manually (due to a clash with the spider mod, i had to do ssi.php manually)

But it is still telling me to upgrade...

In fact it still tells me ssi.php has failed.. and  "FTP Information Required"
which goes in a constant loop.

But bizarrely enough in the Package Manager - Install Actions halfway down the list SSI.php is mentioned again as a success.
Title: Re: SMF 1.0.6 Released
Post by: Grudge on January 28, 2006, 09:58:12 AM
Well, the mod file most certainly should update index.php file in the root directory of your forum, so that this line:

$forum_version = 'SMF 1.0.5';

is changed to this line:

$forum_version = 'SMF 1.0.6';

Are you sure you hit "proceed" after clicking the link? When you click the "update" link it first takes you to a page with lots of:
"success" words listed - you *then* need to click proceed to actually install the patch.

In my list it showed SSI.php and Sources/Subs.php as Failures but doing Proceed seems to have worked ok. Everything shows as upgraded to 1.0.6.

I got a failure in SSI.php and changelog.txt, but procedded anyway, and it now shows up twice in my package manager. Should i just delete one of them?

Just uninstalled one of them and i revert to 1.0.5 so i applied mod again lol. Any help on the failures would be nice.

I'll watch this topic for a while before I dare upgrade.

I deal with a number of scripts, not just SMF, and I've learned the hard way to hold back on upgrading a script until all the bugs are worked out.

After selecting "click here to install" the package manager said "Successful" to all files. I didn't install it and went back to the admin centre, but the mod is listed in the package manager, even if I didn't install it.

The update went without problems. 1.0.6 is running.

The mod will be listed in the package manager if you don't click proceed - but will not have a green dot next to it.

For people having failures in Subs.php - do you have mods installed? This replaced quite a bit of bbc parsing which other mods may have affected. Also - you must *already* be on 1.0.5 for the patch file to work.

If you have any problems applying it, you can use the version posted on the downloads page - although, any modifications you have installed will need to be uninstalled. Please post on the forum if you need more help."

This sounds not good to me - i have done a lot of work to install some mods and modifications.
If i have to reinstall all, i won't run 1.0.6 update.

I tried to run the update and I get a list of successes prior to clicking the "proceed" button.

It tells me "Some of the files this package needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and chmoding the files."

I put in my ftp info, click Proceed and nothing happens. I do see the tar file in my packages directory on the server. But not showing any signs of update. So the one click doesn't seem to be doing it for me.

Any thoughts? This will be my first time upgrading an SMF forum so I am not sure what I should be seeing. (I used phpBB2 for a few years and SMF smokes it).

Thanks,
Mudd

As ever, my thanks to the SMF-devs, for tending to our needs and issuing this patch. Good on ya! ;)

I have done my upgrade, and mostly all is well, but I have one question if someone can advise?

My forum usually doesn't like being patched using the package-manager, and this was no exception. I generally get a warning about certain chmod privs needing to be modified, and asking for the FTP server login details, which I dutifully enter, but it always seems to just refresh the page and ask for the same info again.

Not too bothered about that bit, because I am used to doing it via the back-end, from the days of YaBBSE, and if anything, the process is usually just as sweet as the package-manager route (which I have seen working on a 'local' forum, so I know it's sweet, see? ;))

This time, however, I did not select the option to mess with the 'Classic YaBBSE Theme', when running upgrade.php. Everything else finished ok, but when I check the version numbers, I am told that the 'Classic' version is out-of date, specifically the file recent.template.php which is 1.0 instead of 1.0.1.

Thing is, I looked in the distribution zip which I downloaded for the update, and THAT also has the theme\classic\recent.template.php showing up as v1.0 in the file, so I'm a little confused as to what to replace my 'live' copy with.

I tried various things (using that one, and using the one inside the 'default' theme, but in all cases, my forum's 'version-check' widget still shows up as v1.0 in red.

I notice I also have a theme called 'Converted', but which I'm not sure if it is in use or not, really!  :-[ I'm a little wary in case I mess something up, if I start twiddling with that one. I think it's probably the one I created when I first upgraded my YaBBSE board to one of the pre-1.0 SMF versions. I think also, at some point in the past (possibly the second SMF patch), I got confused by the 'Convert Theme' option in the upgrade.php process, and that's how I have developed this phobia about the 'Converted' theme bit. I've never really wanted to risk messing with it, in case it affected my users - most of whom have only ever known or used the old YaBBSE layouts, and haven't taken the opportunity to experience the forum in the new 'SMF-provided' ways! :D

Any advice appreciated - what file should I change, and with what?

Thanks

BigJacko, overwriting your current Recent.template.php with the 1.0.6 version (if there is one) would not be a problem at all :).

When you change your theme to the "Converted" theme, what does it resemble?

I removed Googlebots and Spiders and the patch was successfully installed on my test site.  However, I can not re-install the same mod since it's not compatible with the update version 1.0.6.   I could probably try to manaully install mod.

Hello,

Is anyone here who has installed the update without problems?

Thank you!
Here  :) It took about 15 seconds and went without a hitch.

Now the only thing is that when I try to upload new packages (mods) using the Package manager I am getting errors. Everything else works as it should.

update went good, but...

it modifies SSI.php. I made a copy of ssi.php, and modified it alot to use it on my site. Should i make them same changes that the update did to SSI.php, or is it not that big a deal?

How about you keep your current SSI.php and just apply the 1.0.6 changes yourself?  That's what I would do :).

Alot of replies since I posted this so I thought I might bring it foward a bit, does anyone have any thoughts on this? I am not sure what needs to be chmoded as it doesn't tell me and the readme for the update itself doesn't say anything.

Thanks - Mudd

Thanks,
Mudd

I applied the patch.

I had to manually first revert SSI.php back to the 1.0.5 version (making a diff from my version to the 1.0.5), then apply the upgrade to 1.0.6, and then manually re-apply the diff to the file. Everything seems to be working perfectly.

Minor updates are. Major are not.

1.0.5 -> 1.0.6 is a minor update.

You chose to use the beta and RC versions of 1.1. If you don't like it, dont try the beta.

1.0.6 is on the 1.0 code base

1.1 is on the 1.1 code base.

1.0 line now will only do security and bug fixes for its relases while the 1.1 brings new features.

They will run side by side incase anyone still wants to use 1.0 instead of 1.1 they just won't get any new features.

I'm having a small problem. Must be because of my multiple mods. In Subs.php, I can't find where to stop the part I need to replace, maybe it was changed by a mod or something. I've tried including my Subs.php, but I have no idea how to do that. Should I post my Subs.php whole as a bunch of code? or link ya guys to it? Lemme know, thanks.

I backed up of the 1.0.6 install, cause I could not get to the forum page.  I did a restore, but my site still says version 1.0.6.

I checked the subs.php and ssi.php and they version 1.0.6.  I added the Googlebot code back to those two files.

The reason that those mods wont show the install link is because they have the install for tag in pscksge-info.xml that will stop the mod form installing in any other version of SMF.

SMF 1.2 is non existing. You might have SMF 1.0.2. and then I'd recommend you to update  :)

You can download the mod to your PC and edit package-info.php and edit the install for tags and add 1.0.6 where 1.0.5 appears.  Separate them with a comma(,).

Would we lose our current installed mods when we upgrade?

My Googlebot mod uninstalled when I upgraded to 1.06, and when I tried to reinstall it, it said:

Install Actions for archive Googlebot_v104_smf1.0.x-1.1b2.zip:
The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

Hello,

Is anyone here who has installed the update without problems?

Thank you!

I just clicked the red tag where it informed me i need to update in the Admin panel. That was it... i did put into maintence mode though before i did this, showed me all the files and i clicked proceed. BANG updated to 1.06 even said it down at the bottom of the board. And it even retained my mods which i currently run like Tiny Portal.

Ok, I'm still confused... I've read through all of these messages and I didn't see any answer to what to do when you click on the "update your forum" in the red box in the admin center and it doesn't work.  I, as with others, get the "The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF."  error message.  So there's something not happening that should be but like I said, I've not seen anything about what's wrong and how to fix it...

I've not modded my forum in any way shape or forum as I can't figure out how to do that either, but that's a topic for another message in the future.

Can someone help?

Thats fantastico's duty not Simple Machines, they will update and when the hosts call back they will receive the updates and then the users can update, usually takes a day or two for fantastico to update.

I just have to install this. It looks much better than Invision Power Board!

Okay, I think mine is upgraded to 1.0.6 okay now.
When I ran the upgrade, it showed "Failed" on Sources/LockTopic.php and Source/Memberlist.php and
the stuff about "please ftp in and chmod".
The smf_1-0-6*tgz in my Packages dir was < 5k in size.
I edited LockTopic.php and Memberlist.php to make change "Software Version" to remove the "RC2"  and then the "Failed" msgs went away.
Should I download the 1.0.6 tarball and extract, diff, cp these two files to be safe?

I chown -R apache.apache the Sources dir, but the "chmod" msg persisted, so I chmod -R apache.apache the whole smf install.  Then it was happy.

I don't want my php files to be writable by apache, just in case anybody finds a security hole, so I chown -R the smf install back to another acct after completing the upgrade.

Seems okay, now.  Should I be concerned?
Should I consider upgrading to 1.1?

1.1 will be a few months away most likely.

I spent much of today preparing for the upgrade from 1.0.5 to 1.0.6. I performed all maintenance on my forum, backed up everythings (files and database) and noted down a bunch of threads here describing problems with upgrading and how to fix them. I probably spent nearly two hours doing all of this.

Then I did the upgrade.

And it lasted about 35 seconds. No problems whatsoever, completely smooth, error-free. Am now at 1.0.6. Took the forum out of Maintenance Mode and it's back to normal...

I know so many posts are about problems and I just wanted to post about how easy this upgrade was for me. Just like not backing up is a good way to ensure you'll have problems, I guess one way to make sure things go OK is to be completely prepared for a problem to happen.

If that is so I'd say anyone who has not updated to 1.0.6 and had a heavy modded forum at 1.0.5 stay away from 1.0.6

Hosed my board up good for something that was suppose to be basically a security fix.

When I said train wreck earlier that was a understatement. Tempted to go to rc2 for my test rc2 is in better shape than this 1.0.6  >:(

Important Note for Users of SMF 1.1
This release does not effect anyone currently running SMF 1.1 - do not run this update!

It's hard to see how clearer anyone could be! Like Dan suggested just use your backup created when you upgraded.

Owdy, we get the point, most people wont actually see that warning as they will download the package, if they do happen to be reading page 11, they will have read your earlier comment and redones as there'd be no point in them being on page 11 if they werent looking for something specific, so please stop with the huge red writing. Or better yet, update the package so that the upgrade.php script wont run on 1.1 installations, that way they wont break their database. In the ammount of time its taken you to make that point over and over, you could have something made to help.

There are many smf versions in download area. If you are running php+mysql forum, you need to know what software version numbers mean.

If you use this mod with 1.1, it wont work. I says: The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF. If you download whole package from download area, thats another thing. Read my comment about version numbers.

The two Subs is correct - this patch contains three mod files (One for 1.0.6 then one for each of the compatibility fixes). All the failures are rather concerning though - what mods do you have installed? It's strange that index.php worked and all the rest failed.

Upgraded two sites without a hitch using package manager.

My third site had some permission issues, so I entered the ftp details (correctly, they've worked before, too). However many times I tried this, it still would not let me click proceed but present the ftp prompt over and over.
So I manually adjusted the perms via my FTP client and it installed just fine.

Still seems silly that it couldn't do this via FTP itself since it has worked for me in the past.

Anyway, pretty painless upgrade for me.

I had to uninstall the patch because I rec'd the 400 Error Code - Bad Request and could not get to my site.  I had to use another tool to restore to a previous working date before the patch.

My question is when I uninstall the patch will it also uninstall the compatibility fixes, and the one I'm concerned about is the MySQL 5.0.12 compatibility updates.

Please let me know.  I can't have the site go down again if this uninstall still leaves this MySQL compatibility fix behind.  Thanks!

I get the The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF error trying to run this update from the link in the Admin Center, as described by one poster at the beginning of this thread.  I have read through most of this thread and haven't seen anyone address this issue.

Trying to do this update via the Package Manager produces the same result.

Documentation about how to update manually is very sketchy.

Can someone point me to a clear, well-written set of instructions and/or a possible fix to the automatic install option?

Title: Re: SMF 1.0.6 Released
Post by: bmkane on February 01, 2006, 11:43:01 AM
What "included" instructions?

In the smf_1-0-6_package.tar.gzp file I downloaded from the link at the top of this thread, there are no instructions.

Links to help docs in the file called "package-info.xml" to http://mods.simplemachines.org/docs/manual-install.php result in a non-existant page and eventual redirection here.

The "Support" page says "Please forgive us for the mess; this section has not yet been completed" and also redirects you here.

So far I have yet to come across any useful step-by-step instructions in this thread.

So where do I find them?
Title: Re: SMF 1.0.6 Released

I was referring to the update package available on the download page, not the file attached to the first post in this thread.  If you don't have mods, just download the update package, extract to your computer, upload the files and run the update script.

vi3t,

Can you start a topic about that in the support board - with the exact code you are using that causes that issue?

RoarinRow,

Uninstalling will remove the compatibility update, but you can reinstall that separately as the 5.0.12 compatibility does not cause any problems with the admin getting to the admin centre IIRC

why on the dowload page is the one package downloaded as 'tar.tar' instead of 'tar.gz'?

Says corrupted when I use package mgr, but when installed manually it worked fine.  Had to manually change extension to .tar.gz/extract/upload/upgrade.

All .tar file packages on download page are downloading as tar.tar instead of tar.gz...  fyi.

I think I am seeing a trend here so far. Could be wrong.

Those with a lightly modded forum or fresh install of 1.0.6 seem to have had a good install or update.

Those who had many Mods and maybe some customization seem to have had or are having issues of some type or another.

Some got the package manager to work and others could not use it. Maybe a Hosting server issue? I don't know but do find that rather odd.

Next update maybe a note of caution needs to be added that a modded customized forum may have problems.

But even with all that happened I still see SMF as a better forum that phpBB or vBulletin  ;)

Are you using the default theme? Re-upload your theme files and see if it fixes it and also check if you receive the same error with the default theme.

If you have a specific support issue after upgrading to 1.06 it would be better to start a new thread in the support board.

For 1.0.6 you can only use themes for 1.0.5 or 1.0.6.  You can't use 1.1 themes on 1.0.x and you can't use 1.0.x themes on 1.1.

Well you can use 1.0.x. themes on 1.1, but you just fill up your error log. :P

I get this when trying to "upgrade" using the package manager:

The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

I've chmoded the Packages directory. Why doesn't this work?

my issue is after i upgrade. i can't see more then one user online at a time..

(note: this is the 3rd time i've deleted and reloaded the boards, i had to do this becuse some weird SQL glitch , removed the ability for anyone in a group lower then mod to send PMs, error was , recent.templete.php older version. or something to that effect.. I backed up and deleted the boards, reinstalled them from fantasitico. then up dated to 1.0.6, then updated the threads file from back up. , i then , dsownloaded the zip file and uploaded just the themes folder becuse that was were the probem seemed to be.. it fixed teh PM problwem but now the board thinks it's 1969.)

i was using 1.1RC2 , and now tried to install 1.0.6 through this package http://www.simplemachines.org/download/index.php?thanks;filename=smf_1-0-6_upgrade.zip (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/index.php?thanks;filename=smf_1-0-6_upgrade.zip) , and got the following error while running update.php

Converting activity logs... Unsuccessful!
This query:
SELECT lmr.ID_BOARD, lmr.ID_MEMBER, lmr.logTime
FROM smf_log_mark_read AS lmr
LEFT JOIN smf_log_boards AS lb ON (lb.ID_BOARD = lmr.ID_BOARD AND lb.ID_MEMBER = lmr.ID_MEMBER)
WHERE lb.logTime < lmr.logTime;
Caused the error:

Unknown column 'lb.logTime' in 'where clause'

Please do reply me. My board has been down for a few days cos nobody replied me in support forum.

Why are you trying to "downgrade" to 1.0.6 from 1.1 RC2 ?

1.0.6 can be upgraded from 1.0.5 or before. 1.1 RCx series is a later version already! You don't need to do this upgrade.

I think the best is to "upgrade" to 1.1 RC2 again :)

This topic if for 1.0.6 not 1.1 RC1.  If you are going to upgrade to 1.1 I suggest you upgrade to 1.1 RC2.

I'm so hesitant to upgrade from 1.0.5 to 1.0.6. It looks like there are so many problems with this upgrading. My question is: How is 1.0.5 different from 1.0.6? What are the new features exactly?

There are no new features.  This is a security fix.

I upgraded two SMF sites and assisted with two others. All of them were smooth upgrades with no problems whatsoever.
