Supermod to Simple Machines

Are there any plans to bring out a converter for this or, if I wanted to, would I have to use a Yabb to Simple Machine converter, and loose all the additional features supplied with Supermod?

Thanks,

Mark.

David

Supermod would have to be fully rewritten to work with SMF.  There will be a convertor that will allow you to upgrade to SMF but you will lose the Supermod functionality.

worth noting that all the extra tables and extra data will still be there, so you can still choose to mod it with individual mods that take advantage of the data already there. (correct me if I'm wrong there...)

Unknown has said he will develop a convertor that will convert into a clean set of tables.

hmmm... whada u mean by a clean set...? coz shouldn't all the member info remain in the member table etc...? or will it like go to member_extras table or something....?
hmmm... well I cant really say that I care.. most of the stuff in supermod is probably standard now anyway.. and adding new mods by yourself is half the fun ;D

[Unknown]

1. Special "Supermod" data NOT part of YaBB SE will not be converted, even if the same feature exists in SMF.  This may change.

2. The current upgrade/conversion script does not remove the old fields or tables added by mods or the Supermod.  I may write a separate converter to do this job, if it is needed.

3. This converter, which I may write, would "remove" any fields or tables from your database that are not part of SMF's known set of fields and tables.

4. The upgrade/conversion script has an option to create a backup of your old tables and data before conversion.

5. ANY EXISTING MODS you have installed WILL NOT carry over, EVEN IF the same feature(s) are/is in SMF.

6. The Supermod Team seems reluctant to cooperate legally with the SMF and YaBB SE team.

7. Mods for YaBB SE can be rewritten, although it may likely take a lot of changing, to work with SMF with their original data.

ok, cool... thanx for that.
cleared quite a few things up ^_^
I guess the modding community will have a lot of fun jobs rewriting mods for SMF :D joy!!
we're allowed to 'port' other peoples mods so long as we use entirely our own code right? (ie: port the idea not the actual mod) legally..?

[Unknown]

Unless they patented it, (highly unlikely) yes.

-[Unknown]

Tyris

lol, ok cool. (has -anyone- ever patented a YaBB mod...? or any forum for that matter...? and does it still count if its a mod for a different forum ;))

Out of respect for the original mod writer (and perhaps to avoid confusion over multiple mods that do the same thing), one might want to check with them to see if they plan to port their own mod before running off and rewriting it yourself.  I believe it would be a simple courtesy that one would likely expect if the roles were reversed.

offtopic: well, here in Europe it's not that unlikely anymore ... http://swpat.ffii.org/

Tyris

@JackRabbit - fair enough, I agree I'd like the same respect if someone where to port one of my mods (of course I don't have any public ones.. but you know what I mean).

patenting is dodgy.. I mean the way things are going... you could probably patent the use of str_replace as a means of replacing bbcode with html equivilents... and so on and so forth... it just gets stupid.
People should be able to write their own code from scratch to do whatever they want so long as they dont copy code.

Hi ,

This bit has got me popping out kittens :o

Can I clarify this point. Are you saying that anything in a MySQL database that is not SMF related will get "removed" ?
I have a lot more than just yabbse running from my MySQL database with obviously different table names, eg table = links_members, links_category, list_banned etc etc

Would those tables get destroyed by using an SMF convertor?

[Unknown]

No, the iea is only for tables... and this converter IS SEPARATE.  How many times must I say this?

It is unlikely this converter, which I MAY write, will come out even the week of the release of SMF.  There are NO PLANS to include it with SMF for any reason, shape, or form.  It woukld ONLY be for MAINTENANCE cleaning of your tables, IF YOU WANTED TO DO SO.

It would have NOTHING to do with Supermod OR YaBB SE.  It would "convert" ONLY SMF to SMF.

I dunno if he really means all non-related tables too...
but fear not, the main converter which is already written copies over ALL relevant YaBBSE --> SMF fields and tables, and just leaves any additional fields where they were, so it wont damage any of your own tables.

*edit* [Unknown] beat me ;D

Fizzy

Jeez  :-X

Talk about getting my head bitten off for asking a civil question  :-\

Tyris, thanks for clarifying that for me.

[Unknown]

Sorry, but I kept saying that.  I tried to make it CLEAR that it's SEPARATE.  Why does no one understand?  What am I saying that makes this point so cryptic and vague?

It's not you, Fizzy, it's saying the same thing over and over.  I have a little brother and can't stand it any more.

Fizzy

Hey that's cool

I haven't even a clue how much pressure you guys must be under to get this released.
It's not that you don't explain yourself because you do, it's that some of us aren't as familiar with the terminolgy or language that you use as second nature so we need a bit of nurse maiding.

Please try and bear with us .
Don't doubt that you're not doing well, we know that the whole team is working its socks off. Just please try and bear with us when it comes to explaining things, we're not as quick on taking up what you are saying, that doesn't make it your fault buddy by any means , it just takes a bit of time to get things clear in a thick old skull like mine ;)

Thanks for being understanding :) And thanks for all the hard work. Alpha SMF has already proved that.

[Unknown]

No, it's my fault.  I always phrase things exactly the wrong way.  Even this sentence code easily be better put by practically anyone else on this forum.

Maybe it's also related to my being awake for the past about 26 hours... I need to stop doing this, not to mention screwing my schedule so royally.

But, nah, it wasn't actually that bad.... I'm just on a short leesh.

-[Unknown]

Fizzy

Well it's cool with me regardless

You shouldn't bust yourself up like that. I'm sure there isn't a member here that wouldn't mind waiting an extra week or two rather than to see you doing yourself in like that.

I for one appreciate all the efforts you are putting in on SMF.
