This kind of goes hand in hand with TheGamer's topic in "Why did you start using SMF?", and a topic that jerm started in the private boards (We were all once a newb.. find out what we all wrote! (or at least some of us)).

Here's my first ever YaBB SE post, back in March 2003.  Less than 45 days later, David asked me to join the Support Team... long before I actually installed my own first public copy of YaBB SE.

More and more people are going to start filtering HTML email messages out, as most spammers use HTML to send mail.  Might be a good idea to keep it strictly text based emails (default) unless specifically requested otherwise.

That was back when I was clueless with PHP..I think I kind of gave up when I saw Oldiesman's reply with complicated find and replace lines (or maybe I didn't know how to use the "last posts" feature and couldn't find the thread, I don't remember).

My first post on SMF was a post praising a theme made by Bloc. 

That is a very nice theme.  I seriously think it is one of the nicest I have ever seen. It is easy to read and has a very nice 'sleek' feeling to it. I like what you have going with the images. It is not just another theme, but a rather original one in mind. I look foward to any new themes you make. As this one is now set to my boards default theme. 

My tone seemed a bit more newbie back then.

Hi, I am Gazmanafc, the owner of a forum, which is currently on Proboards, Its sort of like YaBB but not quite. If you wish to see go to http://gazmuyloco.proboards30.com but It doesnt have the features that I have seen on another forum I go to which uses SMF.
So what I am asking is there a way to make my proboards forum, to a SMF one?

Why is SMF so slow?

Hi.

I have a forum at www.ellekforum.com . It is a phpBB forum. Yes, correct guess, I will convert to SMF!

However, I installed SMF 1.1 RC2 to www.ellekforum.com/forum and converted using the appropriate converter. No problem with converting. But the forum loads very slow! The original phpBB forum loads very fast, but SMF doesn't.

Here is my second forum: www.sallapass.com/forum It is a SMF forum, 1.1 RC2, and loads very slow again! Why can it be? Or do you also experience these with my forums? Can you try once?

I loved 1.1 RC2 theme and want to use it.

Hello I recently made a forum with smf when I try to install the arcade mod it tells me files need to be chmodded through ftp, when I allow it to do that ....nothing happens after that ...is there a step I`m missing or can someone point me in the direction of a good install tutorial

Heh, real simple question from me:

Unable to obtain write-access to the file 'Settings.php'!

Please make sure it is uploaded, and try to chmod the file to '777' during this installation proccess. In most FTP clients, you do this by right-clicking on the file and going to "Properties..." or "Permissions..."
I have changed the Settings.php file to the right folder and still no luck. What does the chmod 77 thing mean?

Anyway. I just had a few kinda requests  I've only just registered here so please be kind (although I've been lurking for a while)

Anyway... on my board the first thing I did was remove all the code for the default smilies. I personally think it's better just to remove the default smilies and re-add the ones that you actually want to use. That way I can reorder any of them whenever I want!

Anyway - a question. How hard would it be to implement a feature where you could choose whether a smiley was visible or not? I would like to add an extra column to the "add smiley" page where you could select whether a smiley would be visible on the smiley bar (when you post etc). The reason for this is that I would like to add quite a few smiley short cuts for BIG pictures that get posted a lot. They would be too big too show on the page when you are posting your reply but regulars would remember the codes for them that I add. I know you can use the directory method but you can't choose your own smiley code then.

Do you think this would be something fairly easy to add? I assume it could be added by editing modsettings.php and adding an extra field to the database... and then checking if an IsVisible flag is set when it comes to printing out the image tags for each smiley on the post reply page. Would this be the correct way to go about adding this stuff? If so I may have a go

I would think that my first post was before this one. At one time my post count was in the many of thousands on YSE and it is only showing 1054 of my posts so I am assuming my first post was in boards that no longer exist. So here it is.. (direct copy from private boards)

Oh, if you look at my style of typing, I am totally a AOL idiot - typing with u/m/r/1/wud etc. Freenode changed that. Now I am an English nazi. I hate when people use abbreviations of two or three letter words.

As you can see, I was still used to using Perl based YaBB.
