PM Spam Limits

How would I put in a PM limiter in so peopel can't spend more than 100 PM per hour or something like that?  We keep getting hit by someone sending porn PM's

Well, it would be easier to either install the captcha mod to prevent bots from registering and sending spam, or you can approve all new members.

Approving all new members on a 20,000 member board is not logical nor possible, and captcha stops full bot registrations, but it does not stop a user from registering then using a bot to send PM's.

Nuke, you can enable permissions on post count based groups, and then disable PMs until a certain amount of posts have been made.

Try the Advanced Visual Verification Mod, http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=474, it allows you to use captcha for PM's; as well as searches etc!

My other suggestions for a mod include:

- Only allow members to send private messages after they have been members for so long.  Say 2 weeks?

- Number of posts per time period... IE:  They would have to have at least 10 posts over a month.  This would reduce the incidence of a spammer posting 10 times in a row so they can send spam. (This may go hand in hand with the above post?)

I curently have it sent up so that they have to post a message in the forum to send PM's.  The pornspammer that has indected other SMF sites postes ~10 spam messages in the forum before he started the pm bot.

I dont think there is, you might be able to ask around to see how easy it would be to change it yourself.

Unfortunately, spam can be hard to stop.  I know it's not the perfect solution, but you could disable PMs for all new users until they contact you.  Once you verify who they are, you could add them to a group that has PM permissions.

This is one of the things that has been added to 1.1 Final to help combat spam like you're having.
