This has probably been asked before but the search throws up every variation where the letters 'counter' have been used! I want to put the counter code that I currently use on my site index file into the forum index to get some idea of the total number of users. Where would I put this code?

Stick it in index.template.php. It should probably go somewhere in the template_main_below function.
