Highlighted text looses focus after first modifier

I noticed a really wierd bug in RC 1, hoping you guys might be able to help me out. I used to use YabbSE, which was decent in its own rights, but switched up to SMF RC1 because it was just sooo much better. Now there is a slight problem when posting a message.

Before, when I was using YabbSE, if you wanted a word(s) to be both Bold AND Italic you could highlight the word(s) and then hit the bold button and then the italics button. Now, however, after you hit the bold button it looses focus on the word, and then hitting the italics button will instead put the italics tags at the end of instead of around your previously highlighted word(s). Is this a bug, or a feature that can be toggled?

Someone actually reported this before, so I dug out my old install of YaBB SE...

In both Firefox and IE, it didn't do what you say.  Co9uld you point me to a YaBB SE installation that does?

This is my older board, but it works the way I explained. It was closed a few weeks ago, so only the news category is open for posting.

Doesn't do it there for me either.  I'm using Microsoft Windows [Version 5.2.3790] (that's 2003 Server) and I tested it with Internet Explorer 6 and 6SP2.

I just tried it with 5.5, though, and it did work.  Odd.

Incidentally, it works with 5.5 on SMF too.  So this is an Internet Explorer problem.

Hmmm. It works fine for me on YabbSE using IE6, I've tested this on mutliple machines. Your IE6 must be fubared somehow.

I don't think it's a browser realted problem though, as it fails to retain memory of the highlighted text on Firefox as well. All I want to be able to do is highlight a word (or words) and then hit bold and then italics, without having to rehighlight the word(s) after I hit bold.

I'm not intentionally trying to be rude, but It seems like a no-brainer to me.

Actually, YaBB SE didn't even support using it at all in Firefox.  It has to be done very differently for each browser.

Okay, this is really bugging me. Doesnt ANYONE know how to fix this? It's obviously a code issue, but where the issue is being caused I cannot tell. The closest thing I could find that looked like it could even REMOTELY be the cause of this is a function in script.js called surroundText.

Again, the problem is that SMF seems to lose focus on highlighted text after adding a BBC tag, causing the next BBC tag to be clicked to end up at the end of where the highlighted text is -  instead of surrounding it.

[Unknown]

Well, you can replace the function in script.js with YaBB SE's equivalent in ubbc.js... but be aware that it won't work as well with non-Internet Explorer browsers.

And again, I can't even reproduce what you're saying with Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher.  You're not still using 5.5, are you?  (even though, for me, 5.5 does what you expect in both SMF and YaBB SE, again as I said.)

I understand what you're *saying*, I just can't seem to get the same results you are describing.

For your pleasure and typing enjoyment (although this doesn't address your, quite strange, issue):

* Now, in Gecko-based (Mozilla, etc.) browsers, clicking bbc buttons will select text better. (script.js)

And, my Internet Explorer 6 is not foobared.  I have access to at least 3 distinct versions of IE6 (SP1, SP2, and 2003's IE SP1) as well as 4.0, 5.0, and 5.5.  Regardless, this won't affect any of those browsers, but it will affect Mozilla Firefox, etc.

Actually I figured out on my own that it wont work at all unless I replace out the code in both the script.js and post.template.php files, but as that is a serious amount of work I am not going to do that.

I am using the latest version of Internet Explorer on all of my boxes, version 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. Are you trying to tell me that on your box you can put two BBC tags onto a highlighted word withought having to reselect the word after applying the first tag? Thats ALL I want to be able to do, disregard any other preconceptions you may have.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying.

In Internet Explorer 6.0 and above, if I click the "Bold" button, I get my text surrounded with and .  After this happens, no text is selected.  This happens for me with all browsers except Internet Explorer 5.5 and below - on YaBB SE and SMF forums.

Quotedisregard any other preconceptions you may have.

I understand exactly what you're saying you want to do.  In contrary to what I just explained, you want the "text" portion to be selected after clicking the "Bold" button above the text area.  I can understand that you want this, but again nothing has changed to stop this from happening - and it happens for me with Internet Explorer 5.5 on SMF.

In Mozilla Firefox, this was not happening.  This includes any version of Mozilla, or any other Gecko based browser (possibly even Safari.)  I have updated the javascript code for the next release of SMF such that what you're expecting to happen will indeed happen in said browsers.

So, are you saying that it's not going to work in IE 6 at all then?
