basic help with avatars

Why would an avatar appear distorted?

I know very little about avatars (don't currently use one), but most members of my forum have had little trouble displaying theirs. However, a new member is experiencing difficulty with his, though the source picture appears to be fine. On the forum it appears all stretched out.

On checking 'help', I've found almost nothing about avatars; I don't know how SMF deals with sizing issues. Can somebody clue me in?

It could be sizing settings; can I see a link to said avatar being stretched?
