Aloha - I am having quite a lot of trouble getting the SMF conversion for Invision to run.

When I go to SMF the entire board is blank - and there are no users. Now I can't even admin the install.

Either the MySQL user accounts you use for Invision and SMF have to be the same, or the SMF user has to be able to access tables in the Invision database.

These errors indicate that neither of the above are true.  Future versions will give a better error message.

Is there anyway to convert the database without making the users the same? This host will not allow multiple users to share the same database. I can add multiple users but they must all be uniquely named.

So weird!

It is called DirectAdmin Web Control Panel.

Ideas? Sorry to be such a pest.

I would suggest simply installing SMF into the same database as Invision - it should be fine and cause no problems.

Please go to Admin -> Forum Maintenance -> Recount all forum totals and statistics, as well as Find and repair all forum errors.

All of the posts should have been converted, but currently the totals are wrong.

Hi

I'm new to SMF and indeed yabb, i'm also not very familiar with using mySQL itself.

We've been asked by our host to close our invisionboard due to security problems, and have installed SMF, but we've loads we'd like to move onto the new forums.

We use version 1.1a of invision so would the above work ?

Are there any pitfalls we need to look out for ?

Our conversion went really well. After applying the above fixes, everything converted perfectly. I have a problem with orphan posts - but I think we can fix that.

I think SMF is a thousand times better than Invision. I can't believe it took us so long

I get lots of errors and can't access the board at all now.

I copied the invision database and then our host populated the SMF database with the invision data, and we ran the script, the following was the result.....

Has anyone got any suggestions ? What did I do wrong ?

Your errors were almost the same as mine - The solution was to install the SMF database WITH the Invison database. After the conversion process is complete and you are happy with the results delete the tables with the Invision prefix and you will be all set.

The errors as explain above are happening because the MySQL databases do not have the same passwords and/or usernames.

Thanks, but not really, i'm no expert with mySQL as is probably obvious.

I exported the mySQL database from the IPB forum, and our host imported it back as the SMF forum, I've then run the conversion. I don't understand the "mySQL databases do not have the same passwords and/or usernames" since to my knowledge there is only one mySQL associated with the SMF forum. I'm concerned about losing the IPB forum as we have a big database.

I hope that makes sense, I know what I mean

Do you have cpanel ? Do you have PHPmyAdmin?

Yes both, though I can't access them from here (working) but i'm going home shortly for an hour or so.

With CPanel, give access to both the database SMF uses and Invision uses to the user for the SMF database.

For example, you might have "username_invision" and "username_smf" as databases and users.  This is very common, and may very well have been what your host did.

For terminology:
MySQL: Database engine.
Your MySQL server: an installation of MySQL, on your server (hoster's) computer.
Database: One "area" of tables and data in MySQL; often, you can have up to five (or some number) of these per hosting account.
User account: A username and password used to access the MySQL server and its databases.

I have done that, but still get the same error messages.

If I understand you correctly in cPanel under user..... tcadmin_smf2 I give ALL priveledges to use tcadmin_our ipb database (I don't want to post the name as there is a security issue), i've done this but the errors still exist.

I think the issue is that the databases have to have the same user name and pass.  Not just the permissions ... make sense?

I'm getting nowhere sadly, i've un-installed and re-installed, but I cannot get it to work.

How i'm going about the process.

1. I install SMF.
2. I give permission for SMF to access to the invisionboard database.
3. I run the conversion.

I've had several answers, one posted above, another saying that the SMF database password is incorrect, and finally one telling me that SMF cannot access the invisionboard database.

Its very frustrating, as i'm obviously doing something wrong, but my knowledge of mySQL and phpMyAdmin are very limited.

Not exactly sure what's different about this one than the one that's available on your download page, but this one converted my invision no problems (1.3f) whereas the other one just hung up and died.

i am new to SMF, But just managed to convert my forum from Invision 1.2 (with the help of this thread).
But I have now a new problem.

Whenever i click on Boards in Admin CP it says

An Error Has Occurred! 
Board Java Software does not have a valid parent. Use the 'find and repair errors' function to fix this.

Well, worst case, try this query:

UPDATE smf_boards
SET ID_PARENT = 0, childLevel = 0;

What is phpMyAdmin?

You'll have to reset all the child boards, but it will work.
