How to use sendmail option?

Hi, i'm a newbie on forum making and i want to know how "sendmail" works.
i'm on a free hosting so i can test first before going to a paid one.
i can't upgrade the version of the SMF installed there.
the version is still 1.0.9

but its ok to me as of now.. the problem is when someone register to the forum, nothing sends to that person.

im using free yahoo mail and i want to use sendmail option
please help me, thanks

Most free host do not allow PHPsendmail or SMTP. Check with your host TOS and see if they provide those services.
