[FREE] Adding characters to the on line list names

I'm looking to find out if it is possible to add characters to the screen name for the online list?

I know I can change the display colors but the problem with this is that eventually you are going to end up with colors that are simular so someone is going to have a hard time seeing if it is orange or yellow for example.

Ok if it isn't possible can someone tell me which file holds the functions that color user names, and I'll make the mod myself.

Actually I'm looking for something close to the functionality I had with Invision where I decide what goes into the span around a users name not just the color

For example in invision they have an area when creating user groups where you can actually write your own span it has a before and an after text box and all I had to do if I just wanted a red Plus by the name to add <span style='color: red'>+</span> in the before box and nothing in the after. OR If I wanted to add colors to screen names I would add <span style='color: red'> in the before box and </span> in the after box.

Is there a way to do this with SMF? If not what files would I need to look into to hack this?
