Block P0rn Video Spammer
« on: December 06, 2007, 10:10:27 PM »
<div style="overflow: auto; width: 100%;"><a href="http&#58;//

I can't seem to block these guys. They get an hardcore image linked to a video. Some times to a website.

I tried blocking words -  http://, img .com, a href= etc.

and they still show.

It is not like a link where a use can report it. The images are show in the forum.  I gues that <div is doing it.  Any ideas?

Thanks

Have you blocked their IP?

Do you have CAPTCHA enabled when registering? And do you have any forums where guests can post?

Have you blocked their IP?

5 to 10 a day spammers on mulitple forums I manage.  many many different ips and hosts.

There is no way "Edit Censored Words" can help here?

Do you have CAPTCHA enabled when registering?

Powered by SMF 1.0.7. I don't see captchas anywhere.

And do you have any forums where guests can post?

No.   I restricted new posts to a "introduce yourself sub forum" to keep them from spamming up multiple sub forums.

Added thanks for your help  :)

Why even let guests have posting permissions anyway? If you unclick posting from guest permissions you'll never see spam again :), I'm almost sure that spam bots can't register smf forums yet, I'm not sure though.

The first thing you need to do is update your version of SMF.  The most current stable version is 1.1.4.  This version does have CAPTCHA.  In addition, there is a mod I just found that checks to see if the poster is on a spam blacklist.  The mod uses the Wikipedia blacklist, but you it allows you to create your own blacklists.  I'd recommend adding the SBLs from spamhaus.org and maybe even spamcop.net.

Because it's his website and he wants to run it that way.

It's the shortcoming of SMF and its developers that it doesn't have visual verification for guest posting, not the shortcoming of the webmasters who want guests to contribute to the forum without having to go through the process of registration.

I have guest posting enabled as well and I get porn spam every day.  I hate mods, so I'm not going through the pain-in-the-butt process of installing one.  I'll just have to wait for SMF 2.0.

Unless you install some sort of visual verification modification for guest posting, there really isn't much that can be done.  I also recommend upgrading to either 1.0.12 or 1.1.4.  Upgrading to 1.1.4 will cause all of your mods to be erased and you'll have to re-theme your board as well.

capabmx not having a go, but some of us find it useful to allow guests limited posting.

I have a single board where guests can post. It allows members who are having difficulting logging-in to leave a message and is also useful for those having problems signing up.

Yes it gets spammed, we're experts at deleting their posts and blocking ip ranges now.  ;D

It's a nuisance, but a necessary one.

Once logged-in members cannot view this board, so nobodies going to see their messages anyway.

Also I've added many words to the censor list, such as viagra, which get replaced with * SPAM - DO NOT CLICK * which makes a complete and utter mess of their posts and destroys the urls at the same time.

All the best - Duncan

haha, I was just throwing that out as another idea. I just never really saw the benefit of guest posting, but everyone sees stuff differently. I hope you get the results you are looking for though :).

haha, I was just throwing that out as another idea. I just never really saw the benefit of guest posting, but everyone sees stuff differently. I hope you get the results you are looking for though :).

Let's say that I'm searching for a solution to a web design problem I have.  The search engine returns a forum post, I go to the forum and I perhaps find the answer to the question I have, perhaps not.

But let's say someone else has a problem that I know a solution for.  Am I going to go through the process of registration and probably email confirmation to type a 15 second response and give the guy the information he needs?  No way.  I'm not going through that process.  So the question remains unanswered.

Not everyone wants to join a "community".  Some people just have a quick question to ask or a quick answer to give and expecting them to go through the rigamarole of joining is too much to expect.

Plus, some of us aren't looking for a "community" per se, we want a messageboard with the ability of repeat visitors to join the community.  Guest posting accomplishes that.  The only problem is that the developers of SMF failed to incorporate visual verification on guest posting, which is a huge blunder, in my opinion, as the logic to handle visual verification already exists and could have been easily implemented in this manner.

Thanks everyone.  These are not guest by the way.

People break captcha btw.

And spammer can sneak this in while being a valid user and there you have porn pics in your face

<div style="overflow: auto; width: 100%;"><a href="http&#58;//

Didn't anyone from smf look at this string?  Why can't it be blocked with filtered words?

Just inserting that extact string into a post does absolutely nothing.  There must be more to it than that.  Do you allow HTML in posts?

We have our forums down switching hosts.  I will check and let you know when we are back up. I have spent hours now cleaning up these spammers.  I think the version upgrade to captchas is the way to go.  Even with captchas some of these clowns still sneak in in person and post their junk. grrr

Yes upgrading to 1.1.4 will be your best option, since you dont want mods.  Granted using the registration captcha will only stop bots from registering and it wont really help if you allow guests to post...  I know you dont like mods, but http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=907 would be a good option to try.

If you want to try to install the mod, I am sure there are some of us that will help you along the way.
