Altering the forum's appearance

I'm wondering if it's possible to alter the color scheme, layout, and icons in my SMF forum.

I found this page: http://support.simplemachines.org/docs/themes.quick-start.php

followed these directions: Admininistration Center -> Theme and Layout Settings -> Install a New Theme

and reset the board background from 'white' to 'red'... but it stayed white. so, I must be doing something wrong.

Oh yeah, I made a copy of 'default' and named it 'exterminance1'.

you have to remember to change the currently selected theme to your custom made theme, otherwise it won't work
