I have my forum in  a subdirectory of my site, like www.mysite.org/forums/myforum
Would moving the forum one step up  ie www.mysite/myforum, improve my chances of getting indexed by search engines?

Getting indexed by search engines is relatively easy.
Once they have a link you can usually get one or two pages indexed within a month or so.
But they need either to be submitted the link directly by you or have it linked somewhere on another site which is indexed.

It is generally thought for SEO purposes, the higher up the domain your forum is, the better indexed your forum gets.

Site directories and other link farms are not usually good for SEO.

Avoid link farms like the plague, they'll damage your ranking.
